Flyers Community Relations & Youth and Amateur Hockey Flyers Inflatable The Flyers have an interactive inflatable game that travels to various events to help bring hockey awareness to communities throughout the Delaware Valley. The Flyers inflatable game is a 16’ x 16’ x 8’ slap shot cage that allows fans to take their best shot at beating a stationary goalie. The Flyers inflatable is perfect for any event, large or small. Hooked on Hockey Hooked on Hockey is a fun program that seeks to create hockey awareness among children throughout the Delaware Valley. During each Hooked on Hockey clinic, Flyers staff members teach kids basic hockey skills in an enjoyable environment. This summer program introduces children to street hockey while providing them with the fundamentals that will translate to hockey at any level. Each Hooked on Hockey event includes an introduction of basic hockey fundamentals such as stick handling, passing, and shooting through scrimmages, skill competitions, and other fun activities. Flyers Ambassador of Hockey, Bob “The Hound” Kelly, and members of the CR Staff host the event and interact with participants throughout the session. In support of this grassroots initiative, the Flyers will contribute Mylec hockey sticks to all participants in an effort to keep children “hooked on hockey.” The Flyers visited 35 locations and got over 4,000 kids “hooked on hockey” during 2011-2012. Flyers School Assembly Program The Flyers School Assembly Program was designed to teach children in grades 1-6 the importance of using teamwork to achieve their goals in school, sports, and at home. Flyers Ambassador of Hockey, Bob “The Hound” Kelly, along with members of the CR staff educate students on the meaning of teamwork and why working together can be so important. Kelly also discusses his playing career with the Philadelphia Flyers and the need for safety while playing sports. The program uses creative videos, interactive games and presentations to keep children involved and enthused. All students in attendance receive special Flyers giveaways as well as an interactive Flyers activity book. Over the course of the 2011-12 school year, the Flyers School Assembly Program visited 70 schools and reached over 22,000 students throughout the Greater Philadelphia region. Flyers Community Relations & Youth and Amateur Hockey Bob “The Hound” Kelly Bob “The Hound” Kelly serves as the Philadelphia Flyers Ambassador of Hockey. During his twelve year playing career, Kelly played 10 seasons for the Philadelphia Flyers. Kelly, a member of both Flyers’ Stanley Cup winning teams in ’74 and ’75, scored the game-winning goal in game six of the Stanley Cup finals against the Buffalo Sabres to clinch the Stanley Cup for the Flyers on May 27, 1975. Kelly was also a member of the Flyers team that put together a 35 game unbeaten streak during the 1979-80 season; a record that has yet to be broken. Kelly retired from professional hockey in 1982 and has served as the Flyers Ambassador of Hockey since 2003. Kelly remains committed to the Flyers organization today, and works to spread his love of both hockey and the Flyers while assisting the community. As the Ambassador of Hockey, Kelly visits schools, hospitals, golf outings, and other charitable events to support the surrounding community. Kelly works closely with the CR Department to help the sport of hockey grow by conducting in-line and on-ice hockey clinics. He is an integral part of both the School Assembly Program and the Hooked on Hockey street hockey clinic. In addition, Flyers Hockey Hall of Famers Gary Dornhoefer and Bernie Parent, along with former longtime employee Joe Kadlec, also represent the organization at community events.
