British Ecological Society – Grants for<br />

Young Ecologists. The BES provides<br />

support of up to £20 thousand to help<br />

early-career ecologists launch research<br />

projects. The BES will look favorably<br />

on applications from individuals based<br />

outside of <strong>the</strong> UK who do not have a<br />

rich resource base in <strong>the</strong>ir own scientific<br />

communities. Applicants must be members<br />

of BES. Applications (first round) are due<br />

Conservation, Food, and Health<br />

Foundation -- Concept Applications 2011-<br />

2012. The CFH Foundation makes grants<br />

to nonprofit organizations for projects in<br />

conservation, sustainable agriculture, and<br />

health in developing countries. Most grants<br />

are US$15 thousand to US$30 thousand.<br />

Concept applications must be received<br />

by 01 January and 01 July in order to be<br />

reviewed for <strong>the</strong> Foundation’s meetings in<br />

May and November, respectively. Link<br />

Royal Geographical Society -- Application<br />

Deadlines January 2012. The RGS<br />

funds British students and researchers<br />

for international studies and projects,<br />

including many in ecology and<br />

environment in <strong>the</strong> developing world.<br />

Geographical fieldwork grants, RGS-IGB<br />

small research grants, and o<strong>the</strong>r categories<br />

of grants that can be used for international<br />

projects (e.g., Henrietta Hutton, Monica<br />

Cole), have deadlines on 20 January<br />

Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute<br />

-- Research Grants 2012. The STRI<br />

offers grant support for university and<br />

postdoctoral research at its facilities in<br />

Panama in several disciplines of biology,<br />

ecology, soils sciences, anthropology, and<br />

o<strong>the</strong>rs. Fellowships and internships are<br />

awarded to researchers from <strong>the</strong> USA and<br />

Latin America in several program areas.<br />

Deadline for <strong>the</strong> Earl S. Tupper postdoctoral<br />

grant is 15 January of every year.<br />

O<strong>the</strong>r programs have deadlines in March,<br />

May, August, and November. Link<br />

Volvo Adventure Competition -- Youth<br />

Projects in Environment 2012. Volvo<br />

Adventure is an educational program<br />

that makes grants for community<br />

environmental projects by youth<br />

worldwide, aged 13 to 16. Applications<br />

are submitted by teams of two to five<br />

members. Volvo will invite <strong>the</strong> finalists<br />

to Sweden to compete for cash prizes<br />

of US$10 thousand, US$6 thousand,<br />

and US$4 thousand. Guidelines for <strong>the</strong><br />

competition are available in ten languages.<br />

Wildlife Conservation Network --<br />

Partnership Applications 2012. The WCN<br />

supports wildlife projects worldwide, with<br />

emphasis on Latin America, Africa, and<br />

Asia. WCN invites letters of inquiry from<br />

registered nonprofit organizations engaged<br />

in wildlife conservation or animal welfare<br />

to apply for partnerships. Letters of inquiry<br />

are accepted through 15 January 2012.<br />

World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF) --<br />

Prince Bernhard Scholarships for Nature<br />

Conservation 2012. WWF announces<br />

<strong>the</strong> 2012 Prince Bernhard Scholarships<br />

to support professional training or<br />

formal studies of individuals working<br />

in disciplines directly relevant to nature<br />

conservation. Eligibility extends to midcareer<br />

nationals from Africa (including<br />

Madagascar); Asia and Pacific; Latin<br />

America and Caribbean; Eastern Europe;<br />

and <strong>the</strong> Middle East. WWF gives priority<br />

to applicants seeking support for studies or<br />

training in <strong>the</strong>ir own countries or regions.<br />

The maximum grant is CH10 thousand.<br />

Applications (in English, French, or<br />

Spanish) are due before 11 January<br />
