Elster Gas North America Experience the Elster Advantage
06 Elster American Meter
In the early days of the gas industry,
Elster American Meter produced the
first gas meter in the U.S. enabling
utilities to earn revenues based
on gas consumption.

Elster Gas North America Experience the Elster Advantage
Elster American Meter
Elster American Meter offers
solutions for every application
A History of Innovation
Our first innovation in the 1830's was
a tin-cased meter found primarily indoors.
Since those early days, we've developed
dozens of improvements and new
technologies that make gas measurement
more efficient and more productive for our
customers. We evolved that first meter's
tin case into a cast iron case, and finally
to an aluminum case, so that meters can
now operate dependably in any outdoor
environment. Elster American Meter
led the way to more accurate gas
measurement with a new synthetic,
diaphragm material that improved
the diaphragm's ability to withstand
different gas compositions, enhancing
meter performance.
Best in Class Research
& Development
Recognizing the need for continuous
improvement, Elster American Meter
has consistently invested its resources
in plant and equipment. Highlighting
this commitment is our 255,912 sq.
ft. manufacturing, laboratory and
office complex in Nebraska City, NE.
This modern facility is dedicated to
producing the company's gas products
and features a state-of-the-art research
and development laboratory to support
the company's continuing new
product introductions.
Most of our new product innovations
and introductions are the result of joint
development efforts with our customers.
It is through these close relationships
that we are truly able to understand
the needs and requirements of the
market. Our R&D laboratory in Nebraska
City, Nebraska is home to both new
development projects and routine
performance testing using both SNAP
and Bell Provers. Our ability to simulate
real world environmental conditions
is key to our track record of safe
operation and of bringing value
to our utility customers.
Our Products
Whether it is regulation, metering, data
collection, data transfer or evaluation,
Elster American Meter offers solutions
for every application – customized to
the specific needs of each individual
customer – either as single components
or complete systems.
The metering and regulation product
range covers devices for measuring
consumption which can be used both
for custody and non-custody transfer as
well as traditional gas regulators for low,
medium and high pressures.
Elster American Meter’s portfolio of
products include
• Diaphragm Meters - Diaphragm
gas meters are positive displacement
meters seen in almost all residential
and small commercial installations.
The meter has chambers formed
by movable diaphragms. With the
gas flow directed by internal valves,
the chambers alternately fill and expel
gas, producing a near continuous flow
through the meter. As the diaphragms
expand and contract, levers connected
to cranks convert the linear motion of
the diaphragms into rotary motion of
a crank shaft which serves as the
primary flow element.
• Rotary Meters - Rotary meters are
highly machined precision instruments
capable of handling higher volumes
and pressures than diaphragm
meters. Within the meter, two figure
"8" shaped lobes, the rotors (also
known as impellers or pistons), spin
in precise alignment. With each turn,
they move a specific quantity of gas
through the meter. The operating
principle is similar to that of a blower.
The rotational movement of the crank
shaft serves as a primary flow element
and may produce electrical pulses
for a flow computer or may drive
an odometer-like counter.
• Turbine Meters - Turbine gas meters
infer gas volume by determining the
speed of the gas moving through
the meter. Because the volume of gas
is inferred by the flow, it is important
that flow conditions are good. A
small internal turbine measures the
speed of the gas, which is transmitted
mechanically to a mechanical or
electronic counter. These meters do
not impede the flow of gas.
• Low (5 PSIG or less), Medium (6
to 60 PSIG) and High (Over 60 PSIG)
Pressure Regulators - A Gas Pressure
Regulator is a valve that automatically
cuts the flow of gas to a certain
pressure allowing for the safe
operation of appliances and plumbing
instrumentation and controls. Gas
pressure regulators are often used
at the main entrance of gas to a
building. They allow sources of gas
to be used which come at a higher
pressure than can be tolerated.

needed to improve business operations
and customer service, tower operating
costs, and increase revenue and profits.
Our sophisticated communication
network is an intelligent, self-registering,
self-healing, two-way controlled mesh
solution for electric utilities, and also
supports standalone gas and water
utility applications. Our use of industry
standards enables EnergyAxis to
integrate seamlessly with your legacy
or enterprise systems to provide
unrivaled return on investment.
Elster’s next generation of EnergyAxis gas
and water modules will support migration
from mobile to fixed network topologies,
assuring that your AMR investment
will be protected should you decide
to implement a fixed network later.
This powerful solution offers the
features you require including demand
response, in-home solutions, remote
connect/disconnect, outage detection
and restoration notification, theft and
leak detection, time-of-use metering,
prepayment options, and many
more functions.
EnergyAxis is the most widely deployed,
two-way RF mesh network in the world.
It has been proven effective in the most
densely populated cities and rural
mountains, in extremes of heat, cold
and humidity, and even when meters
are deployed in basements and
metal enclosures.
TRACE ®
Cost Effective Gas-Only Solution
Elster’s TRACE is an automated meter
reading (AMR) system that uses two-way,
RF communications to specify and collect
gas meter data. The system includes
transponders that process individual
meter data and mobile interrogators
that communicate with transponders
to identify the required data, collect it
from the transponder, and provide it to
the route management software. TRACE
efficiently processes and transfers meter
data to your utility’s customer information
system (CIS) providing accurate billing
information. Two-way communications
enable TRACE to deliver more data more
efficiently than typical AMR systems.
Benefits include more detailed data
and faster route completion.

of each individual customer
A History of Innovation
For better development of the market in
Canada, Elster American Meter acquired
Detroit Meter Company. A shop was set
