A History of Innovation
Our first innovation in the 1830's was
a tin-cased meter found primarily indoors.
Since those early days, we've developed
dozens of improvements and new
technologies that make gas measurement
more efficient and more productive for our
customers. We evolved that first meter's
tin case into a cast iron case, and finally
to an aluminum case, so that meters can
now operate dependably in any outdoor
environment. Elster American Meter
led the way to more accurate gas
measurement with a new synthetic,
diaphragm material that improved
the diaphragm's ability to withstand
different gas compositions, enhancing
meter performance.

The metering and regulation product
range covers devices for measuring
consumption which can be used both
for custody and non-custody transfer as
well as traditional gas regulators for low,
medium and high pressures.
Elster American Meter’s portfolio of

• Diaphragm Meters - Diaphragm
gas meters are positive displacement
meters seen in almost all residential
and small commercial installations.
The meter has chambers formed
by movable diaphragms. With the
gas flow directed by internal valves,
the chambers alternately fill and expel
gas, producing a near continuous flow
through the meter. As the diaphragms
expand and contract, levers connected
to cranks convert the linear motion of
the diaphragms into rotary motion of
a crank shaft which serves as the
primary flow element.
• Rotary Meters - Rotary meters are
highly machined precision instruments
capable of handling higher volumes
and pressures than diaphragm
meters. Within the meter, two figure
"8" shaped lobes, the rotors (also
known as impellers or pistons), spin
in precise alignment. With each turn,
they move a specific quantity of gas
through the meter. The operating
principle is similar to that of a blower.
The rotational movement of the crank
shaft serves as a primary flow element
and may produce electrical pulses
for a flow computer or may drive
an odometer-like counter.
• Turbine Meters - Turbine gas meters
infer gas volume by determining the
speed of the gas moving through
the meter. Because the volume of gas
is inferred by the flow, it is important
that flow conditions are good. A
small internal turbine measures the
speed of the gas, which is transmitted
mechanically to a mechanical or
electronic counter. These meters do
not impede the flow of gas.
• Low (5 PSIG or less), Medium (6
to 60 PSIG) and High (Over 60 PSIG)
Pressure Regulators - A Gas Pressure
Regulator is a valve that automatically
cuts the flow of gas to a certain
pressure allowing for the safe
operation of appliances and plumbing
instrumentation and controls. Gas
pressure regulators are often used
at the main entrance of gas to a
building. They allow sources of gas
to be used which come at a higher
pressure than can be tolerated.

The foundation of Elster Instromet began
in the Netherlands in 1965 with a focus on
Turbine Meters. Elster Instromet ultrasonic
technology was an acquisition from Stork
Cervix in 1995. The introduction of the
Digital Absolute Travel Time Method in
the early 1980’s helped to develop the
first accurate and reliable ultrasonic river
flow measuring system. Elster Instromet

• Elster Gas Depot - To provide our
customers with reliable parts support,
Elster Gas Depot houses extensive
inventories in facilities throughout
North America. This allows us to
process and ship stocked replacement
parts within 48 hours of receiving
your order.
• Refurbishing - The Refurbishing
program refers to all brands of
meters that are less than 20 years
old and includes various processes
like the Internal Leak Test, Pressure
Wash, General “Above the Table”
Clean Up, Index Test, Inspection
and Lubrication, Proving, Prime
and Finish Paint and more.
• Refurbish Plus - The Refurbish
Plus program refers to all brands
of meters that are less than 30 years
old. The program contains all services
included in Refurbish, plus additional
replacement parts and services such
as Pressure Testing at Badged
Maximum Pressure.
• Reverify/Adjust - The Reverify/Adjust
program provides the customer with
a standard process similar to “Pass
Thru” utility processes that confirms
the measurement and pressure
integrity of the meter.
Meters qualify for Reverify only if
intest results are within +/- 1.0% with
a spread not to exceed 1%. Meters
with intest results within +/- 2.0%
with a spread not to exceed 1% are
candidates for Reverify and Adjust.
• Metrology Services - When sufficient
vacuum is applied to a sonic nozzle
it creates a constant flow rate.
Bernoulli’s principle is applied to
calculate various flow rates chosen
by the user, and the metrology
process is automated by a computer
or PAC system. Our sonic nozzle
provers are capable of displaying
not only meter proofs to a user,
but are also capable of transmitting
proofs as well as other important
data to database systems across
a computer network.
Our Metrology Group also designs
and provides new SNAP provers,
upgrades and large Universal
customer designed sonic nozzle
provers and test equipment. Elster
SNAP provers have become the
North American standard for the
accurate and reliable proving of
natural gas meters.
• Field Services and Training -
Elster Meter Services offers an
extensive field service and training
portfolio for both the Upstream
and Downstream markets.

Founded in 1944 in Cleveland, Ohio as a
pipe nipple manufacturer, Elster Perfection
expanded into the water heater market in
the 1950's. Through the development of
several new products designed to extend
the life of water heaters, Elster Perfection
became and remains a major supplier to
this industry.
Elster Perfection entered the natural gas
market in 1972 with the introduction of
the industry's first anodeless service line
riser. In 1976, the company developed the
Permasert ® mechanical coupling for joining

Elster’s TRACE is an automated meter
reading (AMR) system that uses two-way,
RF communications to specify and collect
gas meter data. The system includes
transponders that process individual
meter data and mobile interrogators
that communicate with transponders
to identify the required data, collect it
from the transponder, and provide it to
the route management software. TRACE
efficiently processes and transfers meter
data to your utility’s customer information
system (CIS) providing accurate billing
information. Two-way communications
enable TRACE to deliver more data more

Detroit Meter Company. A shop was set
up in Windsor Ontario in 1900 under the
name of The Canadian Meter Company.
