An 18th century lake is the centre point of
landscaped parkland that was once part of
the Acton Hall estate. It holds big carp and
double-figure pike and there are platforms for
disabled anglers. But it’s closed for fishing
during the wildfowl nesting season. Mustn’t

Restored Edwardian park with lime avenues
radiating from the bandstand. In the evening
the paths are lit by period lamps. An elegant
oasis just a quarter of a mile from the town

ponciau banks, rhos
Half a million pounds of Lottery cash has
restored Ponciau Banks to its Fifities splendour.
Tennis courts, bowling green and bandstand
have all been refurbished. And the exhilaratingly
bumpy BMX track is still packing in novices

stryt las, johnstown
There’s a large lake and three ponds at Stryt
Las. But there isn’t a single fish in them. Bad
news for anglers but good news for the great
crested newts. These wetlands are home to
one of Europe’s largest colonies – and we

nature reserve
Fenn’s, Whixall and Bettisfield Mosses
National Nature Reserve is part of Britain’s
third-biggest raised bog. So huge, in fact, that
it’s visible from space.
Now the idea of a very big bog might not be
immediately appealing. Which may be why
few of the boaters sailing past on the
Llangollen Canal stop to walk the Mosses
Trails.
