We do like a party in Wrexham. Maybe it’s
because we’ve had so much to celebrate in
the last few years.
Acquiring our very own university, for example.
The newest in Wales. Or increasing the retail
space in Wrexham town centre by 25% with
the award-winning Eagles Meadow shopping
centre. All 306,000 square feet of it.
But perhaps the biggest news was when
UNESCO made Pontcysyllte Aqueduct a
World Heritage Site. Which puts our very own
Thomas Telford masterpiece on a par with
world icons such as the Pyramids, Machu
Picchu or the Acropolis.
If that’s not worth a celebration, we don’t
know what is. So it’s perfect timing for
Wrexham to host one of the world’s greatest
cultural festivals – the 2011 National
Eisteddfod of Wales.
From 30 July-6 August up to 160,000 people
will pack the famous pink pavilion and the
surrounding Maes, or field. We’re so excited
this spectacular travelling festival is coming
back to Wrexham that we’ve planned a whole
year of events to go with it. We call it
Wrexham Year of Culture 2011. And there’s a
whole centre section of this booklet devoted
to it (see page 31).
We already attract about 1.4 million visitors
every year. But we’ve always got room for a
few more in our convenient corner of the
North Wales Borderlands. We’re easy to reach
by road, rail or air.
And because we’re both town and county ­
bustling hub and rural paradise - we like to
think we’ve got most tastes covered.
So join the party and discover the Real
Wrexham. It should give you a real buzz.
