the secret valley The B4500 is a very special road. Not that you’d guess it from the map. It begins just off the A5 at the town of Chirk and disappears only about 18 miles later into a network of narrow country roads. It’s special because it runs the length of the Ceiriog Valley. Through a remarkable variety of landscapes – gentle pasture, woodland, sheer rock faces and glimpses of high mountain ridges and brooding moorland. “My job is stressful and I work long hours so this holiday was perfect,” says Patricia. “The biggest decision I had to make was which beautiful place I wanted to visit that day. I was surprised how lovely it was – I couldn’t think how I’d missed the valley before. It has been a real discovery.” The valley is so beautiful, in fact, that Lloyd George called it “a little piece of heaven on earth”. And so miraculously unspoilt that travelling the B4500 alongside the trout-filled River Ceiriog feels like a journey into the distant past. “Here we have a true Welsh valley,” says Bryn Hughes of Ceiriog Country Holidays. “The Welsh language is still spoken, you will still hear singing and see farmers working their sheepdogs. “People can’t believe it. You’re coming back in time, leaving your cares and troubles behind and adjusting to a slower pace of life.” It certainly had the desired effect on Patricia Somerset of South London.
