welsh choirs
We don’t just sing when the National
Eisteddfod is in town. Wrexham’s choirs are
some of the best in Wales. Which means
they’re about as good as it gets.
One way to experience the majesty of a top
male voice choir like those of Brymbo, Y
Rhos, Rhos Orpheus or Dyffryn Ceiriog is to
nip along to a rehearsal.
They may not be all dressed up. But the
sound will be spectacular. And it won’t cost
you a penny.
Every Monday and Thursday you can even
hear “the oldest boy band in the world”. The
Fron Choir have been singing since 1947 but
they’ve only been pop stars since their
“Voices of the Valley” CD shot to the top of
the charts.
Now they perform in places like the
Millennium Stadium and the Royal Albert
Hall. But you can still catch them in a school
hall in Acrefair.
Rhosllanerchgrugog just outside Wrexham
is remarkable for many reasons. It’s said to
be the largest village in Wales. It has several
magnificent choirs. And it is home to
the Stiwt.
Otherwise known as the Miners Institute,
Theatr Stiwt hosts a wide range of dramatic
and musical performances. Its state-of-the
art auditorium is so well equipped it even has
a hydraulic orchestra lift. And it remains as
much of a centre for Welsh culture as it was
when it opened in 1926.
The intimate 150-seat Studio Theatre at Yale
College in Wrexham has regular visits from
touring companies such as Hijinx and Spike
Theatre. As well as productions by students
and local community groups.
The Riverside Studio Theatre is more bijou
still – it seats 120. But this home of amateur
Wrexham Musical Theatre Society packs a
big punch with plays, musicals and charity
fundraisers.
Other stalwarts of the amateur scene are
Grove Park Theatre. Productions in the first
half of 2011 include “The Day After the Fair”,
based on a short story by Thomas Hardy, and
a one-act play called “The Extraordinary
Revelations of Orca the Goldfish”.
