telford’s other aqueduct
Just a few years before Pontcysyllte Aqueduct
came another Thomas Telford masterpiece.
Completed in 1801, his aqueduct at Chirk isn’t
quite as vertiginous.
But the 70-foot drop to the River Ceiriog is
impressive enough, thank you. And you do
have a remarkable view of the railway viaduct
next door to take your mind off it.
If you’re feeling especially adventurous, you
can walk across the 710-foot wide aqueduct
and through the Darkie Tunnel. It’s more than
quarter of a mile long. And its name is all too
appropriate. So please bring a torch and keep
your dog on a lead.
