Grand Jordan Explorer
Discover Jordan’s rich
ESCORTED
SMALL GROUP inheritance from bygone
TOUR civilisations as you visit
the must see icons of this
beautiful country including Roman Jerash,
Mount Nebo, the Dead Sea and spectacular
Wadi Rum. The highlight of any visit, however,
must be the ‘Rose Red City’ of Petra, carved
into the rock thousands of years ago. No matter
how many pictures you have seen, nothing
can prepare you for this amazing spectacle.
YOUR
ITINER ARY
TOUR DURATION: 8 NIGHTS
h Amman: 2 nights
h Dead Sea: 2 nights
h Petra: 2 nights
h Aqaba: 2 nights
DAY 1 h On arrival in Amman, you will be met and transferred
to your hotel. The remainder of the evening is at leisure.
DAY 2 h Start today with a tour of Amman, the capital city
of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. The oldest part of
Amman is crowned by the ancient Citadel, offering a
panoramic view of the whole city. Stops en-route include
the ancient ruins of the Temple of Hercules dating back to
AD161-180, the King Abdullah Mosque and the fascinating
Archaeological Museum which houses an excellent collection
of some of the country’s most important antiquities.
Continue north to visit the fabulously well preserved
Roman city of Jerash, often referred to as the ‘Pompeii of
the East’. Enter through the monumental South Gate, where
you will come across the lovely Oval Plaza, the Temple of
Zeus and the South Theatre, which seats more than 3000
spectators. After lunch at a local restaurant return to the
city and your hotel for dinner and an evening at leisure.
DAY 3 h Depart Amman for the shores of the famous Dead
Sea, ahead of a two night stay. At 417 metres below sea
level, this is the lowest place on earth.
The uniqueness of the area has been known for centuries
and it’s the only place in the world with this particular
combination of exclusive spa benefits: peculiar sun radiation
(ultra-violet filtered), an enriched oxygen atmosphere,
thermo-mineral springs and mineral-rich mud and sea salt.
Enjoy the next two days at leisure floating in the salty
waters and enjoying the Dead Sea’s reputed restorative
powers. During your stay, perhaps take an optional
morning excursion to the Mujib Nature Reserve which
extends to the Kerak and Madaba mountains. The variation
in elevations and permanent year-round water create a
unique ecology that is host to many endemic species of
plants and animals. Enjoy a moderate hike of two to three
hours involving river walking, swimming and clambering
over boulders. (Additional cost applies and valid from April-
October only, weather permitting.) An optional afternoon
tour is also available to Bethany, the site where John the
Baptist is believed to have met and baptized Jesus Christ.
DAY 5 h After breakfast, head to Petra along the King’s
Highway which has been in continuous use for the past
5,000 years and is considered one of the oldest roads in
the world. En route stop at Mt Nebo, believed to be the site
where Moses viewed the ‘Holy Land’ and was buried.
(Please note that currently the church at Mt Nebo is closed
but it is still possible to visit the site). Continue to Madaba,
home of the famous Byzantine mosaics and where lunch
will be served in a local restaurant. Head through the
spectacular canyon of Wadi el-Mujib to Kerak to visit the
imposing Crusader castle built in AD 1142, before finally
arriving in Petra ahead of a two night stay.
