DAY 1 h On arrival transfer to the hotel for an overnight stay
in the nation’s capital. Later, enjoy a fabulous Muscat by
Night city tour with stops at the beautiful Grand Mosque,
the new Royal Opera House and the Sultan’s Palace along
with the Jalali and Mirani forts that guard it. The tour also
takes you to the city Corniche and the Old Town with its
harbour and souks.
DAY 2 h This morning, before departing the city you will
head to the Grand Mosque to see and explore this
remarkable building by day. Your journey then takes you
out of the city and on to Rustaq, famous for its hot water
springs which are reputed to have restorative powers, then
to view the attractive Al Hazm Fort. The next stop is at
Nakhl Fort which spectacularly commands a hilltop and is
the highest fort in the country. A hidden road then leads
you up to the source of the area’s natural hot springs at Al
Thowara Oasis, set deep amongst the stark Hajar
Mountains. Visit Wadi Bani and Bilad Sayt, both famous for
their heritage houses, before finally enjoying a picnic lunch
high up amongst the peaks and ridges of the Hajar range.
Continue on to Nizwa for dinner and a two night stay.
DAY 3 h A full day of sightseeing amongst this mountainous,
desert terrain begins with a visit to Nizwa Fort which has
been strategically built on top of a hill overlooking the
ancient and bustling market town below. From here,
proceed to the late 17th Century Jabreen Castle, arguably
the one of the country’s finest, before then stopping at
Bahla Fort and the Oasis of Tanuf. The tour then continues
on to the spectacular Al Hoota Caves for lunch and a tour of
the caves themselves with their spectacular rock forms and
stalagmites and stalactites. Return to the hotel with time to
relax ahead of dinner and an evening at leisure.
DAY 4 h After breakfast, depart the hotel for beautiful Wadi
Bani Khalid, whose vivid green waters delight against the
stark desert landscape. Bring your bathers as the waters
are irresistible! Enjoy lunch at the Wadi before then
continuing on to the equally spectacular Wahiba Sands to
experience the thrill of ‘dune bashing’ amongst this vast
landscape of undulating red and white sand dunes. Look
out for Bedouins who still cross the deserts with camels in
the traditional manner. A memorable evening awaits as
tonight you spend the night out under the stars at a
traditional desert camp. Facilities are authentic and so
basic, but a traditional dinner of Arabic barbecue, coffee
and dates complete a once in a lifetime experience.
DAY 5 h Leave the romance of the desert behind as your
journey winds its way back to the coast at Sur City to see
the harbour and traditional dhow building yards.
Continue on to Wadi Tiwi with its beautiful oasis amongst
the barren landscape, then to Fins – renowned for its
magnificent beaches.
