The knees should be one fist apart. The blades should then start to square when the hands are over the toes so that they are square for the last part of the slide movement. During the whole recovery, the hands should remain close together. The knuckles of the right hand tucking up below, and touching, the palm of the left hand during the first part of the recovery. 10.7 BALANCE OF THE BOAT Balance of the boat is very simple. It comes from the three points that the rower has contact with the equipment: o The seat – the rower must be sitting relaxed and evenly on the seat. Must not be moving the mid section of the body or rocking the legs side to side to attempt to balance the boat. o The feet – the rower must be relaxed in the shoes, feeling the feet drawing them forward. o The hands – the hands (blade heights) must be level from one side to another. The hands should be moving parallel to the water during the recovery with no vertical movement until placement of the blade. Small adjustments with the hands should be made to correct balance. The profile of the blade is very important. This diagram shows the path that the blade must travel. Hand heights reflect blade heights and blade heights reflect balance.
