Freemasons support makes Westlake student’s dream a reality
When Y13 Westlake Girls High School
student, Ashlee Parkes, was selected by
the Royal Society of New Zealand to attend
the International Space Camp 2012 in
Alabama, she also had to raise most of the
funds to get there. A week ago, Ashlee had
$1,000 left to raise and was running out of
time.
That’s where the Freemason New Zealand
funded FREESTA (Freemasons Science
Travel Award) in conjunction with the Royal
Society became very relevant. This
Award recognises talented science students
throughout New Zealand. Hearing
about Ashlee’s quest, North Shore Freemason’s
Lodges raised the remaining
money between their local lodges. V.W.

surprised Ashlee at Westlake Girls
on Wednesday 20 th June, by presenting
her with a FREESTA
cheque.
Ashlee can now pack her bags
and admits to a few butterflies. At
the International Space Camp
2012, Ashlee will undertake astronaut
training and learn the physical,
mental and emotional tasks
endured by astronauts. Leadership
training, experiencing 4Gs of
lift off force as well as weightlessness
in a space simulator are all
added to the mix. Space Camp
experiences provide valuable insight into
space and its different aspects, as well as
helping Ashlee to discover which related

field to pursue in future. Astronomy has
been Ashlee’s passion for years and this is
a dream come true.
Chinese dragon boat festival
At lunchtime on Friday 22 July International students, friends and staff members
came to the B Block Golden Swan café to celebrate the ‘Chinese dragon boat
festival’ and enjoyed the festival food (Zong Zi), a rice dumpling wrapped in
bamboo leaves in both sweet and savoury versions.

If you have daughters in Year 8 (or other family or friends wishing to enrol their Year 8 daughter at Westlake Girls), our Open
Night is on Monday 23 July. There will be an address in the school hall by the Principal (at 4pm and repeated again at 6pm)
followed by guided tours of the various departments and facilities of the school.
Our Enrolment Nights for both in-zone and out of zone students for Year 9 2013 are on Monday 30 July (surnames A – L),
Wednesday 1 August (surnames M – Z) and Tuesday 7 August (all surnames) from 4pm – 7pm. You do not need to make an
appointment to enrol on these nights. Further information of the school zone and what to bring on enrolment evening is available

A special congratulations to Deena Franklin who was a member of the winning U21
Basketball team at Nationals. Deena was also named the MVP of this tournament and
in the Tournament Team. The North Harbour U17 team was dominant throughout their
Time 7pm and tickets are available from The Edge Ticketing
National tournament also coming away with a gold medal win. Georgia Perrrot Hunt
was the top scorer in the final and Bronwyn Kjestrup was named in the tournament
team for this age group.
Bronwyn Kjestrup and Zara Jillings were also chosen to represent North Harbour in the
FIBA Oceania 3x3 Basketball Youth Championships in Coffs Harbour, Australia.
Aerobics
Congratulations to Holly Hing who recently competed at the 2012
FISAF NZ National Aerobics champs held in Wellington and placed
3rd in the Junior International category.
Auckland Secondary School’s Snowboarding Competition 2012.
This year at Snowplanet the ASSSC hosted 102 participants. Westlake Girls
High School had 3 students to represent the school: Sophia Humphris, Mallory
Perigo and Kirsty Gemmell. They were fantastic representatives for the school,
enabling us to become ‘Westlake Winners’.
Results:
Giant Slalom – Mallory Perigo 1 st Sophia Humphris 2 nd
Freestyle – Sophia Humphris 1 st Mallory Perigo 4 th
With these fantastic results Westlake Girls High School was the overall winning
school for 2012. 2011 was the first year this competition was run and it
was won by Westlake Boys High School.
Former Westlake Girls Student off to
Olympics
Former Westlake student Moira de Villiers
recently visited Westlake Girls prior to departing
overseas on her Olympic campaign.
She attended a staff meeting where she
discussed her future judo plans and goals;
her final year at Westlake was 2007. She
now heads to Spain for a week long training
camp, then Holland for four weeks before
heading to London and the Olympic
Village. She will be competing in the
U70kg Women’s on 1 st August. Moira is
one of two former Westlake Girls students
competing at the London Olympics; the
other is sailor Jo Aleh.

Karate
Reilly Polaschek and Tia Tuiburelevu recently competed at
the Auckland Secondary Schools Karate Championships
with great success. Tia won gold medals in both the Premier
Individual Kata and Kumite in the 16-18 year old division.
Year 9 student Reilly, in her first year competing at the
competition, won two gold medals in the Premier Individual
Kata and Kumite for 12-13 year old girls. Both girls are
looking forward to representing Westlake Girls at the National
Secondary Schools Karate Competition in July
where they are hoping to achieve similar results.
Netball Umpiring
Congratulations to Westlake Girls staff
member Yvonne Morgan who will be
umpiring netball at the World University
Games in South Africa. Following
this she will be umpiring the International
Netball Test Series between
South Africa and Northern Ireland.
Gymsport
Kiera Greenacre represented New Zealand
at the Australian National Gymsport Championships
in Sydney. She attained a silver
medal for New Zealand in the Junior International
Women’s Synchronised Trampoline
event and placed 12 th out of 22 in the Junior
International Women’s Trampoline event.
This competition provided Kiera with invaluable
international experience in her sport.

Oliver
To celebrate the 50 th Anniversary of both our schools we
have decided to present the musical ‘Oliver’ to the public.
This show is obviously based on the novel by Charles Dickens
and takes us to Victorian London where a young orphan
‘Oliver Twist’ meets a selection of evil, kind and criminal characters,
before the inevitable happy ending.
There are some really great songs ‘Consider Yourself at
Home’ ‘I’d do anything’, ‘Reviewing the Situation’ and ‘As
long as he needs me’. Come along and watch the combined
talent of Westlake Girls and Boys, having a great time and
mastering the East London accent, nearly all the time.

Chinese Parents Evening Session

German Exchange Opportunity
There is an opportunity for a German Exchange programme for 4 of our students. This requires your family (if your daughter is
participating) to host a German Exchange student for six weeks December 2012/January 2013, and in return the German student
and their family will host your daughter in December 2013/January 2014 for six weeks.
This programme does not incur any school or homestay fees for either the German students or our students as they co-host
each other (schools and at family homes).
Estimated costs for Kiwi students’ parents:
Travel Insurance – NZ$250;
Air fares: NZ$2,800 approximately (it was NZ$2,793 last time with Emirates);
Rotorua/Taupo, 3-day tour/January 2013 – NZ$420.00, guided by Discovery staff (**all Kiwi host students expected to
participate);
Harz Ranges Trip, 3-day tour in Germany/January 2014 – EUR $250, guided by Brecht-Schule staff (** all German host
students participate);
Discovery Administration Fees: NZ$750.00, includes all administration, information meetings for parents/students, group t-

This opportunity is available to Year 10 – Year 12 students, with Year 12 students having priority. German language students will

What if we live out of zone?
For ‘out of zone’ applications, the Enrolment Scheme is on www.westlakegirls.school.nz and the
deadline for ‘out of zone’ applications is Wednesday, 5 September 2012. Up to 180 places are
available for out of zone students and final places depend on applications received from ‘in zone’
students.
‘Out of Zone’ students will be processed in the order of Enrolment Scheme priority:
a. First priority must be given to any applicant who is the sibling of a current student of the school;
b. Second priority must be given to any student who is the sibling of a former student of the
school;
c. Third priority must be given to any applicant who is a child of a former student of the school;
d. Fourth priority must be given to any applicant who is either a child of an employee of the board
of the school or a child of a member of the board of the school;
e. Fifth priority must be given to all other applicants.
2012 Ballot date
If ‘out of zone’ applications exceed the 180 places available, students are selected by ballot. A ballot
will be held on Wednesday, 12 September 2012 for Year 9 if required. Parents are informed of the
outcome of the ballot within three school days of the ballot.
If ‘in zone’, when should we express interest?
Students who live in the home zone are entitled to enrol at the school. In zone applicants should also
apply by Wednesday, 5 September 2012 to assist us to plan for next year.
International Foreign Fee Paying Students
International students attending our contributing schools may make application for enrolment on
the above dates. Staff from our International Department will be available on these evenings.
