Research and Status
of Taiwan Species
Biodiversity
Taichung
15-16 August 2008

Bryozoans
range from
the intertidal
to the deep
sea and can
form
significant
components
of rock-wall
assemblages.

Some bryozoans are habitat-formers —
like species of Celleporaria ...

But what about
Taiwan?

Liu, Yin & Ma
“Biology of Marine-
the Coastal Waters of
China”
Cryptofaunal bryozoans in coral
environments
Within reefs:
hidden encrusters
cavity dwellers
cavity fillers
dead-coral veneerers
Between reefs:
sediment binders and trappers
sediment stabilisers
Hence, bryozoans can contribute to reef build-up, especially those
species that engage in self-overgrowth or which grow over other
organisms. Such bryozoans tend to become a permanent part of the
calcareous mass that comprises a reef, acting as accessory framebuilders.
