Phonics/Grade 1
This course is organized to help your first-grader achieve
reading success. Your child will learn the letters and
sounds of the alphabet, practice vowel and consonant
sounds; learn to identify beginning and ending
consonants in words, and the sound combinations that
make up words, learn rhyming words, match spoken
words to print, and practice left-to-right and top-tobottom
directionality when reading. Students new to this
course must also register for Phonics/First Grade Reading
Assessment 101.

Developing Writing Skills/

Let’s Prepare for the NYS Grade 4
Elementary Level Science Test
Students will learn about plants and animals, and review
the physical factors that shape the earth (energy, matter,
weather and astronomy). They will also discuss the
scientific method, science safety and ways to present
scientific data. This course prepares students for both
the performance assessment and written test
