<strong>College</strong> for Children Mommy & Me, Kindergarten, 1-5<br />

<strong>College</strong> for Children<br />

<strong>College</strong> for Children will help your children succeed in school this year. Bring them each<br />

Saturday, then watch their grades soar. <strong>College</strong> for Children offers classes in early literacy<br />

<strong>and</strong> math development, as well as phonics, reading, writing <strong>and</strong> math classes for children<br />

in Grades 1 through 5. Our classes will help your children prepare for the NYS ELA <strong>and</strong><br />

Mathematics tests as well. But kids get to have fun, too. Children can study art or the<br />

Martial arts, learn to play electronic keyboards or acoustic guitar, cook with Brigitte, study<br />

French, Spanish, or architecture or develop their acting talents. <strong>College</strong> for Children also<br />

offers Mommy <strong>and</strong> Me classes for toddlers <strong>and</strong> pre-schoolers. All classes are offered on<br />

Saturdays in three 2-hour blocks: 9-11am; 11:15am-1:15pm, <strong>and</strong> 1:30-3:30pm.<br />

Our Winter program begins Saturday, January 10th <strong>and</strong> ends Saturday,March 14th.<br />

There are no classes on Saturday January 17th, <strong>and</strong> Saturday, February 21st. Classes are<br />

eight weeks in length except where noted. REGISTER EARLY! ENROLLMENT IN EACH<br />

Mommy & Me<br />

Our Mommy & Me program is a delightful introduction<br />

to pre-school learning with mommy, daddy or a caregiver.<br />

These classes stimulate your child's intellectual<br />

development, exp<strong>and</strong> fine <strong>and</strong> gross motor skills, <strong>and</strong><br />

provide endless opportunities for emotional <strong>and</strong> social<br />

development. Children <strong>and</strong> parents laugh, love <strong>and</strong> learn<br />

together! Parent/Caregiver participation is required.<br />

Multicultural Arts <strong>and</strong> Crafts/<br />

Age 3<br />

Three-year-olds discover various world cultures through<br />

song, story <strong>and</strong> craftsmaking. Children make Indian<br />

twirling puppets, Japanese paper eggs, Korean dragon<br />

puppets, Guatemalan animalitos, Mexican yarn paintings,<br />

African nose masks, <strong>and</strong> Eskimo laughing masks.<br />

Art Start/Ages 4 & 5<br />

Four <strong>and</strong> Five year olds explore color, texture, <strong>and</strong> form<br />

Kindergarten<br />

Kindergarten courses provide young children rich learning<br />

experiences in music, art, science, mathematics <strong>and</strong> early<br />

literacy development<br />

KinderStart/Ages 5 & 6<br />

This early literacy class helps children develop beginning<br />

reading, writing, speaking <strong>and</strong> listening skills. Activities<br />

are designed to develop phonological, phonemic, <strong>and</strong><br />

print awareness; alphabet recognition; comprehension<br />

strategies; <strong>and</strong> spelling <strong>and</strong> h<strong>and</strong>writing skills.<br />

with rich experiences in art, music, language, theater,<br />

Dr. Discovery/Ages 4, 5 & 6<br />

This fun-filled class takes advantage of the natural<br />

curiosity of 4-, 5- <strong>and</strong> 6-year-olds. Children explore the<br />

natural world around them through observation <strong>and</strong><br />

participation. Young scientists perform simple but<br />

interesting experiments (with Dr. Discovery's help)<br />

with water, air, movement <strong>and</strong> light.<br />

Where Are They Now?<br />

Richard Diaz<br />

Richard Diaz was profiled in the <strong>College</strong> for Children section of the Fall 2007<br />

catalog. He began taking reading classes in <strong>College</strong> for Children when he was<br />

eight years old <strong>and</strong> eventually started working there as an intern with<br />

<strong>LaGuardia</strong>’s Summer Youth Employment Program as a teenager. By fall 2007,<br />

he was finishing his undergraduate studies at Queens <strong>College</strong>, with a major in<br />

English <strong>and</strong> a minor in Secondary <strong>Education</strong>. He had been working as a<br />

teacher assistant for several years at <strong>College</strong> for Children <strong>and</strong> the division’s<br />

Summer Intensive English Language Program (SIELP), an ESL program for<br />

youth entering high school, as well as in various tutoring positions.<br />

Today Mr. Diaz is a graduate of Queens <strong>College</strong>, where he plans to continue<br />

with a master’s degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages in<br />

2009. He teaches his own classes in both <strong>College</strong> for Children <strong>and</strong> SIELP. “The<br />

students I have worked with have been an amazing group. The opportunity<br />

to help them improve on certain skills is truly rewarding,” says Mr. Diaz.<br />

“I am honored that <strong>LaGuardia</strong> has given me the opportunity to work in two<br />

wonderful programs where I am able to experience the joy of teaching.”<br />
