You will focus on pre-algebra, algebra, college-algebra, and coordinate geometry. You will be expected to complete in-class work, as well as homework assignments. Through practice, you will gain academic skills needed for success in college. You will read the novel, Ragtime, by E.L. Doctorow, and explore historical figures from the era including Henry Ford, Emma Goldman, Harry Houdini, J.P. Morgan, Scott Joplin, Stanford White, Winslow Homer, and Sigmund Freud. Through extensive reading and writing practice you will gain academic skills needed for success in college. In addition, the presenter will provide parents with a handout listing a variety of scholarships websites available for families. Discover your Career Options The presenter will link your current or future major with a career, using a questionnaire called the Student Directed Survey. There's so much more to Teen Academy than just reading, writing and math! Art and Design Design is both visual expression and functional problem solving. Discover how art and design is incorporated into everyday life. Learn the basic principles of design, from packaging design to design of fonts and lettering, product design, industrial design, and design for the environment. Explore line, shape, color, texture and space. You'll have the opportunity to disassemble and create simple three-dimensional models of common products. You can apply what you learn in this class to the study of any of the visual arts.
