These New York residents got a job and more through LaGuardia’s Workforce1 Career Center! Pablo Pereira was a LaGuardia student who enrolled full time at the college in September 2007. He obtained a position in two weeks through the Employment and Careers Services Center and the Workforce1 Career Center at Grandland Expo Center in Flushing, Queens, starting as front desk coordinator and within six months was promoted to Special Assistant to the President. He wants to go on to receive a BA degree in criminal justice/criminology, and this job is helping him pay for college. Garvin Casinillo had completed a medical internship at a university in the Philippines when he realized that the healthcare field was not for him. He had attended a technical high school, where he did computer networking and some electronics coursework, and knew he wanted to work with his hands. However, he had never been employed. After visiting the Workforce1 Career Center this past August to explore careers, he was referred to an electronics firm that was willing to train individuals interested in becoming machinists. He was particularly attracted to this position, as it might lead to other opportunities within the field of electronics. In September, they offered him a trial period of two weeks, and he has been working there since. Jessica Altruz was referred to the LaGuardia Workforce 1 Career Center on July 25th of this year by the South East Bronx Neighborhood Center. She was pre-screened for a Stock Associate position with Levi’s Jeans Company. The Center set up an appointment for her, and she applied directly to the Manhattan store. By August 18th, she was hired and started working.
