American Sign Language<br />

The American Sign Language Program involves a 5-course sequence focusing on communication with Deaf individuals. Using the Vista Signing Naturally Curriculum, you will learn to<br />

improve your receptive <strong>and</strong> expressive ASL <strong>and</strong> fingerspelling skills. You will also acquire sign vocabulary, learn about Deaf Culture, <strong>and</strong> practice ASL grammar, including structure<br />

development <strong>and</strong> related facial/gestural expressions <strong>and</strong> conversational behaviors. You will have access to a state-of-the-art ASL Language Lab. If you have already started your sign<br />

language education, you will be screened for appropriate level placement. You will have an opportunity to enhance your skills in 4 different ASL workshops; continue your learning in<br />

Intensive Study in ASL Levels 2-4; progress into a pre-interpreting program by taking Advanced ASL Levels I <strong>and</strong> II; <strong>and</strong> ultimately enroll in a two-year ASL/English Interpretation Program<br />

workshop. If you are registering for an ASL class in<br />

Program for Deaf <strong>Adult</strong>s for the first time, it is strongly<br />

recommended that you attend this workshop, which<br />

introduces our teaching philosophy of ASL <strong>and</strong> Deaf<br />

Culture <strong>and</strong> includes a visit to the state-of-the-art ASL<br />

American Sign Language<br />

Intensive Study in American Sign Language Program<br />

This program's 3 courses, including in-class <strong>and</strong> lab components, are offered jointly with the college's Department of <strong>Education</strong> <strong>and</strong> Language Acquisition. These courses are designed for<br />

those who wish to make rapid progress in developing ASL skills <strong>and</strong> exp<strong>and</strong> their multicultural sign vocabulary, but do not wish to earn academic credit. You will have access to the state-ofthe-art<br />

ASL Language Lab. All continuing education students are required to be assessed through an intensive screening (fee is $50, which is non-refundable <strong>and</strong> must be paid in advance).<br />

registering for any of Intensive Study in ASL Levels 2, 3,<br />

acquainted with a variety of ASL communication styles<br />

<strong>and</strong> dialects used by Deaf people.<br />

Intensive Study in American<br />

Sign Language- Level 4<br />

This course builds on the vocabulary <strong>and</strong> grammar<br />

learned in ASL 1 through 3. Language skills will be<br />

refined in the areas of complex non-manual grammatical<br />

markers, advanced ASL spatial rules, classifiers<br />

(particularly as used for descriptions of small items,<br />

people, cars, <strong>and</strong> places), <strong>and</strong> adverbial modifiers for<br />

small items <strong>and</strong> details. You will be able to use ASL in<br />

a variety of discourse styles, such as persuasion,<br />

negotiation, problem-solving, giving directions, <strong>and</strong><br />

dialogue. Upon completion, your ability to<br />

communicate with Deaf persons will be enhanced.<br />
