English as a Second Language<br />

The English Language Center (TELC) is the largest ESL program in the New York City metropolitan area. Serving approximately 7,000 students a year <strong>and</strong> offering a variety of English<br />

language programs geared to meet the particular needs of our culturally <strong>and</strong> academically diverse student population, it includes full-time <strong>and</strong> part-time programs <strong>and</strong> specialized<br />

workshops for skill development <strong>and</strong> test preparation. Beginning, intermediate <strong>and</strong> advanced level courses are available, as well as a modern language lab facility. The Center issues I-20s<br />

to qualified students. If you complete the intensive programs, you will be eligible to enter CUNY without taking the TOEFL.<br />

ESL<br />

Payment for all ESL courses can be made with cash, money order or credit/debit card (American Express, MasterCard, Visa, Discover) only. Registration may close at any time. Please<br />

Advanced Workshops<br />

Learn English for college, graduate school, <strong>and</strong><br />

professional advancement in these academic preparation<br />

programs. Choose from Morning Intensive (20 hours per<br />

week) or Afternoon Intensive (18 hours per week).<br />

Improve your English reading, writing, listening, speaking,<br />

grammar <strong>and</strong> pronunciation skills, <strong>and</strong> choose an elective<br />

at the intermediate <strong>and</strong> advanced levels - from business<br />

English to dance, pronunciation, vocabulary <strong>and</strong> more!<br />

Receive free tutoring in writing <strong>and</strong> conversation at our<br />

Language Clinic. Classes meet U.S. Government<br />

requirements for the issuance of I-20s.<br />

Registration: January 2nd <strong>and</strong> 5th, 2009, 11:00 am-3:00<br />

pm in Room C-354. The non-refundable $50 registration<br />

Evening Intensive<br />

Are you planning to enroll in a college or university, or do<br />

you need to improve your English skills to advance in your<br />

professional career? If so, take this 6-level intensive <strong>and</strong><br />

academic ESL program. You will improve your English<br />

listening, speaking, reading, writing <strong>and</strong> grammar skills,<br />

<strong>and</strong> acquire valuable college study skills. Registration<br />

starts January 12, 2009, Monday-Thursday, 4:00 pm -<br />

7:00 pm in Room C-354. The non-refundable $50<br />

registration fee is included.<br />

Mon - Thurs Jan 28 - Mar 17 (26 sessions/80 hours)<br />

Do you have difficulty underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>and</strong> speaking<br />

English in your everyday life? Do you need to improve<br />

your overall English language ability? By participating in<br />

this part-time ESL program, you will improve your<br />

listening, speaking, reading, <strong>and</strong> grammar skills, <strong>and</strong> gain<br />

confidence in your ability to use English in a variety of<br />

situations. Classes range from beginning to advanced<br />

levels. Registration starts January 5, 2009, 4:00 pm - 7:00<br />

pm, <strong>and</strong> is also available on Saturday, January 10, 2009,<br />

10:00 am -1:00 pm, in Room C-354. The non-refundable<br />

$15 registration fee is included.<br />

students who want to focus on a specific skill in English.<br />

Writing, Pronunciation, Grammar, <strong>and</strong> TOEFL Preparation<br />

courses are available for those who have completed Level<br />

6 in one of the non-intensive programs or new students<br />

who pass the required entrance test for these advanced<br />

workshops.<br />

Pacement test <strong>and</strong> registration: January 7, 2009, 5:00<br />

pm- 7:00 pm; January 8, 2009, 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm, <strong>and</strong><br />

January 10, 2009, 10:00 am - 1:00 pm, in Room C-354.<br />

Intermediate Grammar Workshop<br />

Do you speak English fairly well but have difficulty<br />

underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>and</strong> using the correct grammatical<br />

structures? Become more confident in your ability to<br />

communicate correctly in English by taking this course.<br />

You will learn common everyday structures used in<br />

written <strong>and</strong> spoken English <strong>and</strong> practice how to use them<br />

in different situations. A variety of grammar exercises,<br />

short readings <strong>and</strong> other materials will be used.<br />
