professionals to receive training in infection control <strong>and</strong><br />
barrier precautions every four years. If you are a licensed<br />
health care worker, this NYS <strong>Education</strong> Departmentapproved<br />
course will satisfy your licensure requirement.<br />
Increase your knowledge of new drug resistant<br />
pathogens as well as occupational risks <strong>and</strong> current<br />
immunization practices for health care workers. You will<br />
also explore new strategies for infection prevention <strong>and</strong><br />
control.<br />

Certified Nurse Aide<br />
The Certified Nurse Aide training program provides<br />
instruction in basic nursing theory <strong>and</strong> the technical skills<br />
necessary to provide patient care. You will receive 90<br />
hours of classroom instruction, followed by a 35-hour<br />
clinical practicum in a local long-term care facility. You'll<br />
also receive 15 hours of preparation for the state exam.<br />
Course content includes basic patient care, infection<br />
control, nutrition <strong>and</strong> vital signs. Upon completion of the<br />
program, you'll take the NYS Certified Nurse Aide Exam.<br />

LPN to RN Transition<br />
LPN to RN Transition Course<br />
Responding to the shortage of professional nurses in the<br />
area, the New York State LPN to RN Transition course<br />
creates a pathway to encourage Licensed Practical Nurses<br />
to advance in their careers. This course will facilitate your<br />
transition from the role of Practical Nurse to that of a<br />
student preparing for the role of Registered Nurse. It will<br />
validate your prior learning <strong>and</strong> update your knowledge,<br />
focusing on critical thinking <strong>and</strong> problem solving skills.<br />
Upon successful completion of this course you will be<br />
eligible to earn a minimum of 12 credits in a participating<br />
Associate Degree Nursing program.<br />

Medical Office Clinical<br />
Technician Program<br />
Get certified as a Phlebotomist <strong>and</strong> EKG Technician, <strong>and</strong><br />
learn medical terminology to become a Medical Office<br />
Clinical Technician. The Medical Office Clinical Technician<br />
assists the physician with many clinical areas of the medical<br />
practice, including taking vital signs, preparing patients for<br />
procedures, performing phlebotomy (blood drawing) <strong>and</strong><br />
electrocardiography (EKG). Upon successfully passing all<br />
three courses listed below, in any order, you will earn the<br />
Medical Office Clinical Technician Certificate from<br />
<strong>LaGuardia</strong>. (Courses may also be taken individually.)<br />
Medical Terminology<br />
Develop a basic "working" knowledge of the language<br />
of health care to serve as a basis for your individual career<br />
needs by using an applied approach. Learn basic medical<br />
terms <strong>and</strong> how they are used in documenting <strong>and</strong><br />
reporting patient care procedures.<br />

Phlebotomy<br />
Learn the anatomy <strong>and</strong> physiology of the venous system<br />
as well as phlebotomy practices. Develop your skills in the<br />
performance of a variety of blood collection techniques<br />
employing universal precautions. Perform blood collection<br />
procedures including: (a) vacuum collection; (b) syringes;<br />
(c) dermal punctures; (d) butterfly needles; <strong>and</strong> (e) microhematocrit<br />
collections. Learn infection prevention <strong>and</strong><br />
control; patient identification; quality assurance; <strong>and</strong><br />
specimen h<strong>and</strong>ling, labeling, <strong>and</strong> transport. Successful<br />
completion leads to certification as a Phlebotomy<br />

Interpretation <strong>and</strong> Performance<br />
of the Electrocardiogram (EKG)<br />
Learn the anatomy <strong>and</strong> physiology of the heart,<br />
cardiovascular diseases, modern EKG techniques, <strong>and</strong><br />
basic EKG interpretation. Become familiar with<br />
electrophysiology, EKG rhythms, conduction problems<br />
<strong>and</strong> pacemaker recognition. You will set up an EKG<br />
machine, prepare patients for testing, <strong>and</strong> perform actual<br />
electrocardiograms. Learn the relationship between EKG<br />
interpretation <strong>and</strong> disease states. Successful completion<br />
leads to certification as an EKG Technician.<br />
