CUNY/Adult and Continuing Education (ACE) Scholarship Fund
Get Help Advancing Your Career
Introducing a Scholarship Just for ACE Students!
The new Adult and Continuing Education Scholarship Fund, supported by the Helena Rubinstein
Foundation, is the first such program at CUNY that is just for individuals enrolling in adult and continuing
education programs. It is open to those who seek to advance their career through learning and gaining new
skills, and who do not have access to other sources of funding to pay for tuition and fees. The courses for
which scholarships are awarded may be in any field, and may be credit-bearing or non-credit (though
scholarships will generally not be given to anyone with 60 or more college credits). Candidates must submit
a 1-2 page personal essay with their application. This scholarship has already helped several of our
students get closer to achieving their dreams!
Meet Some of Our Winners
inspired focused dedicated
Aliza Rosario Eyana Smith Raquel Grullon
Inspired by her father’s experience as
an Emergency Medical Technician
(EMT), Aliza Rosario’s goal since she
was in high school has been to
become a nurse. However, her high
school education was interrupted
when she became a mother at a
young age. She has since earned her
high school equivalency certificate in
LaGuardia’s GED Bridge to Health
Careers Program (GBHC) and is now
studying in ACE’s Medical Office
Clinical Technician Program, with
the future goal of pursuing a career
in nursing.
Eyana Smith is on the road to
becoming a doctor—an Emergency
Room Physician to be exact. Already
a certified EMT, Eyana has continued
on this journey in LaGuardia’s
Paramedic Program. Once she has
completed her paramedic studies,
she plans to apply to college to
begin a premedical program. “When
I first came to LaGuardia, I was
overwhelmed. That changed when I
was introduced to the [paramedic]
staff,” Eyana explains. “With [their]
help I focused on the task ahead.”
Other LaGuardia winners include Vincent Pena and Steven Soto
from the Paramedic Program.
Raquel Grullon is a dedicated
student. She came to LaGuardia
with the idea that she wanted to
become an EMT, and she accomplished
that goal. Along the way she
picked up an award for perfect
attendance. Now she is applying
herself in the college’s Paramedic
Program. “LaGuardia has given me
the opportunity to achieve my
goals,” she says.

I can say that this course has helped me to
develop a better knowledge of English, and
I never thought I would enjoy it so much.
Before I didn’t have any interest in using
English. Now, I feel enthusiastic about
reading newspapers, magazines and even
books. I can enjoy going to the movies in
English. I learned how to use a computer
and how to navigate around the world
using just a little mouse. I am very proud
that I have had the opportunity to be part
of this program because it changed my life.
So far, I can see excellent personal results.
I hope that every student takes this
challenge as seriously as I have. Thank you!
Seven tips to keeping your job search on track:
• Keep your resume up to date
• Develop a strong network that includes family, friends,
neighbors and former co-workers
• Post your resume on job boards in your profession
• Upgrade your skills
• Become certified or licensed in your field
• Keep a positive attitude
One additional suggestion:
Check out our LaGuardia Workforce1 Career Center. We offer job readiness workshops that involve practice job interviews and learning how to develop
an effective network; referrals to training for further education; or direct referrals to employers for job placement.
These New York residents got a job and more through LaGuardia’s Workforce1 Career Center!
Pablo Pereira was a LaGuardia student who
enrolled full time at the college in September
2007. He obtained a position in two weeks
through the Employment and Careers Services
Center and the Workforce1 Career Center at
Grandland Expo Center in Flushing, Queens,
starting as front desk coordinator and within
six months was promoted to Special Assistant
to the President. He wants to go on to receive
a BA degree in criminal justice/criminology, and
this job is helping him pay for college.
Garvin Casinillo had completed a medical
internship at a university in the Philippines when
he realized that the healthcare field was not for
him. He had attended a technical high school,
where he did computer networking and some
electronics coursework, and knew he wanted to
work with his hands. However, he had never
been employed. After visiting the Workforce1
Career Center this past August to explore careers,
he was referred to an electronics firm that was
willing to train individuals interested in becoming
machinists. He was particularly attracted to this
position, as it might lead to other opportunities
within the field of electronics. In September, they
offered him a trial period of two weeks, and he
has been working there since.
Jessica Altruz was referred to the LaGuardia
Workforce 1 Career Center on July 25th of this
year by the South East Bronx Neighborhood
Center. She was pre-screened for a Stock
Associate position with Levi’s Jeans Company.
The Center set up an appointment for her, and
she applied directly to the Manhattan store.
By August 18th, she was hired and started
working.

Where Are They Now?
Richard Diaz
Richard Diaz was profiled in the College for Children section of the Fall 2007
catalog. He began taking reading classes in College for Children when he was
eight years old and eventually started working there as an intern with
LaGuardia’s Summer Youth Employment Program as a teenager. By fall 2007,
he was finishing his undergraduate studies at Queens College, with a major in
English and a minor in Secondary Education. He had been working as a
teacher assistant for several years at College for Children and the division’s
Summer Intensive English Language Program (SIELP), an ESL program for
youth entering high school, as well as in various tutoring positions.
Today Mr. Diaz is a graduate of Queens College, where he plans to continue
with a master’s degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages in
2009. He teaches his own classes in both College for Children and SIELP. “The
students I have worked with have been an amazing group. The opportunity
to help them improve on certain skills is truly rewarding,” says Mr. Diaz.
“I am honored that LaGuardia has given me the opportunity to work in two
wonderful programs where I am able to experience the joy of teaching.”
