The Basic Ec<strong>on</strong>omic Security Tables (BEST) Index<br />
Wider Opportunities <strong>for</strong> Women (WOW) works nati<strong>on</strong>ally and in its home <strong>community</strong> of the<br />
Washingt<strong>on</strong>, DC metropolitan area to build pathways to ec<strong>on</strong>omic security and equality <strong>for</strong><br />
opportunity <strong>for</strong> women, families and elders. The Basic Ec<strong>on</strong>omic Security Tables (BEST) Index,<br />
created by WOW and the Center <strong>for</strong> Social Development at Washingt<strong>on</strong> University in St. Louis,<br />
defines ec<strong>on</strong>omic security in terms of the income and assets workers and retired elders need to<br />
meet their basis needs.<br />
The BEST Index is specific to family size, ages of children, locati<strong>on</strong> and receipt of employmentbased<br />
benefits. It includes the cost of living across the below domains.<br />
