Seatbelt Installation Instructions
Series IIA & III with Hard & Soft Tops
Introduction: This kit comes with a pair of seatbelts and the mounting hardware to install inertia seatbelts in the front of an
88” Land Rover that was previously fitted with lap belts or static shoulder belts. This kit includes two seatbelt reels and receivers.
PLEASE NOTE THAT THE BELTS ARE PARTIALLY EXTENDED FROM THE REELS. TAKE CARE NOT TO ALLOW TOO MUCH OF THE
BELT TO BE TAKEN UP ON THE REEL WHICH CAN CAUSE IT TO JAM. The kit also contains four square plates, (two with fixed
nuts and two with a pair of 7/16” holes), two reel brackets, two aluminum guide plates, two steel guide plates, and one bag of
hardware.
1) Install lower anchor bracket at the seat-box base and rear door post
using existing holes and 1/4” hardware. Note that these brackets are
already mounted in most Rovers and are not included in seatbelt kit.
2) An upper mounting point can be added to Rovers fitted with a hard
top. This bracket, not included in this kit, is usually already in place in late
Series IIA’s & III’s. To install this bracket remove the interior trim. Hold
the bracket up with the flat side facing you and two holes up. Mark the
three hole positions and drill for 5/16” hardware.
3) The seatbelt kit contains two type of 5.5” square mounting plates.
To mount the reel in an 88” Rover with either a soft top or full hard top, use
the plate without the fixed nut. Position the plate approximately 1” down
from the galvanized trim on the seat bulkhead and the 1” over from the inset on the front side of the bulkhead. Drill and mount
with 3/16” rivets supplied so the two large holes are towards the bottom. Drill reel bracket holes to 3/8”. Mount the reel to the
bracket (MRC4687) being careful not to allow the belt to wind any further onto the reel and mount the assembly to the bulkhead
(fig. 3 & 4).
4) Position the two guide plates directly above the reel with the aluminum plate under the steel plate so that it raps over the rear
side of the galvanized top cap. Mark the top cap and drill for 5/16” hardware. Insert the belt in the guide plate and mount the
plates to top cap. If the upper mounting bracket is not being used, as with soft tops, position the pivot point bracket below the
guide or cut the pivot bracket to remove it all together. If the upper mount is used, bolt the pivot bracket to it.
5) The receivers can be installed in a couple of methods. Most Series IIA Rovers have gusset brackets behind the bulkhead.
When using these brackets, switch the receivers so that the one marked for the right is used on the left and vice-versa. Series III
Rovers should have brackets to mount the receiver down through the horizontal section in front of the bulkhead. Receivers
mounted in this fashion are mounted and indicated, right on the right. In Rovers with no pre-existing mounting point, use the
square plate with the fixed nut. Position the plate on the back side of the bulkhead measuring over 8 1/2” from the side of the
wheel well to the edge of the plate. With the bolt hole towards the top, mark its location. Remove the plate and drill for 7/16”
hardware. Reposition the plate and mount the receiver using the right one on the left. Drill out the rivet holes and install 3/16”
rivets.
6) Attach the end of the belt to the bracket mounts in the corner of the seat-base. On Rovers with upper mounting brackets,
mount the pivot bracket to the bracket installed in step 2. The seatbelt installation should now be complete.
