Director’s Message
Dear members of the OCS
family:
On behalf of our children,
thank you for a wonderful
school year and all you have
done in support of that.
Ken Rasp “Our” school is successful
because of the partnership
that links in so many positive ways our
pastors, our parents and our faculty and staff
everyday in the lives of our children. God
truly blesses us with every volunteer hour,
every Mass attended, every visit to a school
site. You are always welcome for lunch, or to
attend Mass with us, or as a volunteer in the
classroom. Feel free to call me; and if I can
join you I will.
Once the school year ended, it did not
take long for us to turn our focus on the
next school year. We are using the summer
months to ready ourselves and our facilities
for August and a new beginning. At the K-3
Steele Stadium Groundbreaking
It was with great pride and excitement that we
broke ground on Steele Stadium on May 19th.
Owensboro Catholic High School will for the first
time in the history of the school be playing its
football games on its own home field. The stadium
is named in honor of Mr. & Mrs. V.J. Steele, Sr., on
behalf of their children.
We extend our deepest thanks and gratitude to
the Steele family for helping us to continue the
outstanding tradition of Catholic High football—
and for being such long-time supporters of Catholic
education, as well as for continuing to help us in our
efforts to ensure the future of our Catholic schools.
We thank members of the Catholic High family
who have so faithfully helped us fund this effort
with private donations and the purchase of Private
Seat Licenses and Skyboxes. We also extend our
appreciation to Kentucky Wesleyan, who has been
so willing to work with us.
Our new home stadium will include:
n An additional 1700 seats, making a total of
2800 seats
n Lighting for night games
n Public restrooms
n Concession areas
Campus, due to an increase in the number
of Kindergarteners, we are moving the
library to make way for another Kindergarten
classroom. The 6th grade wing of the 4-6
Campus will see the removal of the asbestos
ceiling tiles. We will be adding new lighting
as we replace the tiles. New carpeting and
flooring is being laid at the Middle School in
the library, computer room, general office and
band room. At Catholic High and the Central
Office, a new phone system will be installed
that will put a phone in every classroom and
also allow better accessibility to both high
school and central office personnel.
As is always the case, our staff is using
the summer to prepare for the new academic
year. Professional development opportunities
include:
n Additional training in the SuccessMaker
program
n Attendance at a session delivered by a
nationally known speaker on differentiated
SCRIP SUCCE$$ Pours
Money into Parents'
Pockets & Boosts
Local Economy
The 2005-06 school year once again had parents
earning hundreds of dollars that they can put
toward tuition by purchasing and using SCRIP
certificates. This dollar for dollar program was first
introduced system-wide in 2002 and has helped
parents earn over $307,000 in tuition savings.
In addition to the money the SCRIP program
helps parents earn, it also helps generate $100,000
for the OCS budget each year. This amount, if not
raised through the SCRIP program, would have to
be generated by adding it to tuition. So, families
save twice by being actively involved in SCRIP.
During the upcoming school year, the SCRIP
SUCCE$$ goal will be $160, with the additional
funds generated going to help enhance the
technology available to our students.
SCRIP SUCCE$$ has added many new retailers
to the program in recent weeks, and continues to
work to bring in a greater variety of retailers for
parents to use. Among the newest retailers are –
Beef ‘O Brady’s $10 20%
Books – A – Million $10 10%
G.D. Ritzy’s $5 7%
Fazoli’s $25 7%
Clark’s Health and Nutrition $20 10%
Brinker’s Jewelers 5%
Shammy’s Auto Wash $6 10%
Shammy’s Auto Wash $9 25%
OCHS Creative Writing
Class Students Share
Stories
Ms. Teresa Free’s
Creative Writing
Class at Owensboro
Catholic High School
wrote children’s
stories, complete with
illustrations. The
students then shared their
stories with the students
at the Owensboro
Catholic Elementary K-
3 Campus. Below is a
perspective from Molly
McCorkle, an OCHS
senior, on sharing her
story and perspectives
from several elementary
students, on listening to the various stories.
As I walked into the door of the K-3 campus,
the familiar surroundings of elementary school were
very comforting. Instantaneously, I began to have
flashbacks of my elementary school days and the
excitement that I felt when the big kids would come
to my class and read stories. When I walked into
my first classroom, I have to say, I was somewhat
intimidated. I had stood on stages before with
hundreds of people watching me, but this was
entirely different. These kids stared as if they could
see right through me. But the intimidation melted
away when one of the little girls who I babysat started
to jump around, therefore getting all the other kids
excited as well. Then I started to read my story, in
my usual Molly McCorkle way, accents and funny
faces included. When I was finished the kids started
clapping and screaming in unison “Read it again!
Read it again!” It was at that very moment that I
realized, I didn’t just read a story to them, I had taken
them into a world that I had created. And so I read
my story again, and again and again.
“The stories were so creative. They will be good
writers.” – Will, second grade
“The pictures were very colorful.” – Alli, first
grade
“They used good expression when they read the
story.” – Holly, first grade
“The stories were funny.” – Adaira, first grade
“I liked when they showed us the pictures.’
– Evelyn, first grade
“I like when the big kids visit our school.’ – Hope,
Science Allows OCS Students to Explore
By John Calhoun, 6th Grade Science Teacher at the Owensboro Catholic Elementary 4-6 Campus
God’s love is boundless. This universe, this natural world He has
given us is but one expression of that love. It is ours to use (hopefully) to
fulfill His purpose. Our primary goal in 6th grade Science is to explore,
appreciate and steward this natural world we find ourselves in. We want
students to develop a life-long interest and curiosity about the natural
wonders all around us. For some, this interest and curiosity may develop
into a passion leading to a rewarding career in one of the many fields
science offers.
In order to encourage interest and curiosity, the curriculum in the
Owensboro Catholic Schools relies heavily on well planned and challenging
‘hands on’ activities in our science lab. Students construct models to test
hypotheses, make records of their observations and communicate the results
in either lab reports or data displays available to other students. During these
activities students practice other science skills such as comparing, classifying,
measuring, identifying and controlling variables, inferring, predicating and
drawing conclusions. In short, students learn how scientists ‘do’ science.
Students learning to ‘do’ science is an ideal environment for differentiated
instruction. Students with learning styles or abilities not often utilized in a
traditional classroom setting get an opportunity to experience real success. They can add their particular skills
to a project, which would not have been as good without their contribution. They get a chance to shine in
a real and measurable way. This builds self-esteem and confidence, which will positively impact attitude and
affect other areas of a student’s overall performance.
Lab work also provides students the opportunity to practice wise decision-making skills about behavior.
Students are expected to treat one another in a Christ-like manner. They learn to use consensus to make
group decisions such as determining process, assigning tasks, sharing responsibility, taking turns and resolving
conflicts in a proactive and positive manner.
I am blessed to be a science teacher in the Owensboro Catholic Schools. We are not distracted by the
current controversy concerning ‘intelligent design.’ We don’t waste any time about the ‘who’ or the ‘why.’ Our
Religion curriculum answers those questions and supports our quest to explore the ‘how.’
Lent is a Season of Preparation for Owensboro
Catholic Schools
"Love your neighbor as yourself" is lived out by our students at the
Owensboro Catholic Schools everyday, but especially during Lent. Lent
is a season of preparation and the students of the Owensboro Catholic
Schools took part in various service activities.
Owensboro Catholic Middle School students took part in a project
of almsgiving for the Pitino Shelter. Canned goods, hygiene products,
baby items, and toy items were collected. Students were encouraged to
earn these items by doing service for their parents or by using their own
money to purchase the supplies. In addition to these items, the Snack-a-Week
money collected in Religion class also went to the Pitino Shelter. The staff of the
Pitino Shelter was very impressed with the great participation and generosity of
the students.
The Elementary 4-6 Campus held a coin drive called 'Zap the Penny.' Each
classroom had a jar. Each penny counted as a point. Silver coins or papers bills
were accepted; however, they ‘zapped’ the totals by the value of the silver coins
or paper bills. For example, a nickel was (–5) points, a quarter (–25) points, and
a dollar (–100 points). Checks are counted as bills. The object was to get the pennies in a classroom jar for
positive points and to ‘zap’ the other jars with silver coins or paper money to take points away. The students
were quite competitive in earning money to ‘zap’ another classroom’s jar. The classroom with the most points
(not necessarily the most money) was declared the winner and earned an afternoon of fun with a non-uniform
day, pizza, soda drinks and extra PE time. Mrs. Hardesty’s 5th grade class won with 7,992 points. The big
news is the school collected over $2,700 to benefit the St. Vincent de Paul Society. In addition, each class said
the Stations of the Cross each week.
The Elementary K-3 Campus took part in ‘Pails for Nails.’ The students earned loose change by doing good
deeds around the house. Along with bringing in change, students filled up the Giving Trees in the cafeteria
with lots of leaves, showing the good deeds they have been doing at home as a small sacrifice for Lent. The
students then attended an assembly with Virginia Boswell from Habitat for Humanity. She talked to the
students about the special Lenten Project and how the donations of loose change helped purchase “pails of
nails” to build houses for others.
The National Honor Society at Owensboro Catholic High School hosted the 14th annual OCS Food
Drive. They collected various items for the Pitino Shelter at each of the school sites.
Good Friday services were held at each school site as well. OCHS, OCMS and the Elementary 4-6 Campus
each held an all student Stations of the Cross service. The Elementary K-3 Campus held a special service for
Good Friday highlighted with an adult choir and liturgical signing by OCHS students.
Lent is a time of prayer, fasting and almsgiving for the Owensboro Catholic Schools students.
Owensboro Catholic Elementary Academic
Teams Flying High
By Susie Alvey, Owensboro Catholic Elementary
Academic Team Co-Coach
The OCES Academic Team has only existed for
two years. When the Catholic elementary schools
consolidated in 2004 this meant that the team
would have the combined talents of all the Catholic
students on one great team.
Kentucky Association for Academic Competition
(KAAC) sponsors the Governor’s Cup Competition.
The Governor's Cup was founded in 1986 as a
way to promote, reward and recognize outstanding
academic achievement. Since then, Governor's Cup
has become the state's premier academic event,
involving over 20,000 students, nearly 1200 schools,
and thousands of coaches, administrators, parents
and community leaders who see the rewards gained
from encouraging academic performance through
properly structured and professionally administered
academic competition. In the Elementary (Grade 5
and below) division, students take part in a District
and Regional competition.
Governor's Cup consists of eight events:
n Five Written Assessment Examinations--in
Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Language
Arts and Arts & Humanities
n Composition--On-Demand Writing
n Quick Recall--also known as "quiz bowl"
n Future Problem Solving--an award-winning creative
thinking competition
The Sixth Grade Showcase is a one-day academic
event designed to provide a competitive opportunity
for Kentucky’s sixth graders, who are sometimes
“lost” between elementary (4-5) and middle grades
Arts and Arts & Humanities
n Quick Recall--also known as "quiz bowl"
The Future Problem Solving Program (FPSP)
is a nationally recognized, award-winning program
founded by Dr. E. Paul Torrance. The program seeks
to increase awareness for the future and encourage
creativity in students of all ages. The Kentucky
Association for Academic Competition (KAAC)
serves as the Affiliate Program for the International
FPSP in Kentucky.
OCMS Students
Successful in E-Mission
Students in Mr. Rhodes Science class participated
in an E-mission called ‘Operation Montserrat.’ The
following describes the mission and how the students
prepared for this project. In addition, Mr. Joe
Schepers, Owensboro City Engineer, spoke to the
class about disaster preparedness and how the city of
Owensboro has plans in place for disasters.
Operation Montserrat is based on a real historical
event. In 1996 as a hurricane was bearing down on the
island and its volcano was also erupting. The students
were divided into four teams (Communications,
Volcano, Hurricane, and Evacuation) and used realtime
hurricane and seismic data to assist mission
control (in Paducah) in saving the residents from
certain destruction.
The students went through several days of training
to be able to work the calculations necessary to track
a hurricane, monitor seismic activity in order to
predict an eruption, to understand the geography of
Montserrat, its cities, roads and landforms and to be
proficient in using proper transmission protocol in
communicating with mission control.
The students, through logical analysis and
recommendations, were able to safely evacuate the
residents and visitors of Montserrat. In addition,
the students learned the value of teamwork. Many
students commented on the amount of stress they
experienced once the e-mission began. They also
said afterwards that it was a lot of fun to be on an
emergency team exercise.
The e-mission was made possible through the K-8
Annual Appeal funds.
