Principal Investigator 

Quality of research output/track-record: 

How well qualified is the Principal Investigator to conduct the project taking 

into account the early or more mature phase of his/her transition to 

independence, as well as prior career breaks and/or unconventional 

research career paths (especially in the case of women scientists). 

To what extent are the publications and achievements of the Principal 

Investigator groundbreaking and demonstrative of independent 

creative thinking and capacity to go significantly beyond the state of the 

art? 

Taking account of the particular circumstances of the Principal Investigator 

and the proposed research, including any funding already secured, to what 

extent will an ERC Starting Grant make a significant contribution to 

the establishment or consolidation of independence?


ŘEŠITEL – reakce oponentů projektu 

The candidate is at a very early stage of establishing her scientific 

independence, but she has obtained an excellent training in the biology of 

Trypanosomes, studies of mitochondria, and mass spectrometry - the three 

areas which are required for the success of the present proposal. 

The candidate has performed extremely well in her career so far. The 

high motivation for research and an excellent potential are obvious. 

The candidate has published a significant number of papers including some as 

first author. As yet, she has not published independently of her postdoctoral 

or PhD supervisor, which makes it very difficult to judge from her 

publication list her intellectual contribution. 

The candidate is going back to the institute where she obtained her PhD and 

where her former supervisor works on the same topic. If the grant enables her 

to become independent, then it would be important.

Will the project significantly enhance the research environment and capabilities for frontier research

Is the proposed research methodology comprehensive and appropriate to the project? 

Will it enable the goals of the project convincingly to be achieved within the proposed timescales and 

resources and the level of risk associated with a challenging research project?

Does the proposed research involve highly novel and/or unconventional methodologies, whose high 

risk is justified by the possibility of a major breakthrough with an impact beyond a specific research 

domain/discipline?


PROJEKT – reakce oponentů 

Inhibiting the bloodstream form of the parasite is an important 

avenue of research. 

Finding an effective drug to inhibit Trypanosoma will be a major 

breakthrough. 

The project is very interesting and excellently described. The main 

objective is ambitious but the specific goals precisely defined and appear 

doable. 

It is a laborious and difficult proposal in some of the objectives, but it is not 

risky 

There is a chance the work will yield something new that may be useful. 

But, it does not open up new horizons

Rozhodnutí 

The panel was impressed by the drive and enthusiasm of the applicant 

and her experience in working on the molecular aspects of Trypanosoma 

biology. The panel was unconvinced by the structural biology and drug 

screening aspects of the proposal, in which the applicant had little 

experience and was relying mainly on external collaborations. The panel 

encourages the applicant to reapply in the future, focusing on aspects 

that rely on her own expertise and for which she can show preliminary 

data. 

As a result of the final Panel meeting, your proposal passed the 

evaluation thresholds, thereby confirming it as a fundable 

proposal.
