University of Wisconsin-Stout 2012-13 Fact Book to meet their unique academic and personal needs as they navigate the college environment. Thirty thousand dollars of SSS Student Grant Scholarship Aid was distributed to deserving ASPIRE students. Career Services ‣ Career Services provides comprehensive state-of-the-art career and employment related support to students and alumni. Career Services include resume, interviewing, and networking skills development; career counselors who hold individual appointments with students; employment site development for Cooperative Education opportunities; web-based databases and resumes; oncampus employer interviewing and Career Conferences. Some of the online resources provided by Career Services include Interview Stream, EmployOn, Reference USA, Going Global, Career Spots videos, Vault Career Insider, and The Big Guide to Working Abroad. ‣ UW-Stout’s Cooperative Education Program is centrally coordinated through the Career Services Office in collaboration with the academic departments of the university. In 2011-12, over 927+ students participated in the Cooperative Education Program at over 600+ employment co-op sites. All co-op positions are paid opportunities ($13.15 average hourly wage), taken for academic credit, and are related to a specific career or major. Students participate in co-op opportunities in over 35 states each year as well as international co-op sites. ‣ Career Services coordinates a large Career Conference each October which is the largest in the Midwest. This conference has specific majors featured each day and attracts more than 250+ employers, with participation of over 600 employer representatives and 2,500+ students during this three day event. The Career Services office builds relationships with many employers who come to campus for on-campus interviews; sends resume books electronically to employers; and centrally coordinates employer relations for co-op site development with employers. These activities resulted in an overall employment rate for 2011-2012 UW-Stout graduates of 97.3%. UW-Stout graduates have an average employment rate of 97% for the past 10 years. Counseling Center ‣ Counseling and Outreach Services: Professional counselors provided counseling and crisis intervention to nearly 600 students in 2012-13, representing a 20% increase from recent annual averages. Developed a peer-educator program entitled 4 The Health of It that combined with professional staff to deliver more than 150 presentations to over 5,000 students, faculty, staff, and parents on a variety of mental health, alcohol/drug, and relationship topics. Approximately 400 students annually complete anonymous mental health screenings offered on our website. On service evaluations, 80-85% of counseling clients indicated that counseling helped them make improvements on the issues for which they sought help, and 75% who were struggling academically reported they were Office of Planning, Assessment, Research & Quality 117
University of Wisconsin-Stout 2012-13 Fact Book able to focus better on their studies as a result of counseling. Outcome assessments consistently show that a majority of students experience significant reductions in distress symptoms if they attend 4 or more sessions of counseling. ‣ Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) Program: 1) Between 250-400 students cited for underage drinking annually attend an evidencebased moderation skills class and/or a 3-session assessment and feedback intervention with a counselor; follow-up assessments show significant reductions in high-risk drinking behavior and negative consequences. 2) All freshmen students now complete webbased AOD self-evaluations that have been shown to reduce high-risk drinking and marijuana use; 3) Outcomes of the Campus Alcohol Education and Enforcement Plan show several positive trends: decreased numbers of alcohol-related disciplinary offenses, increased numbers of students choosing to abstain from alcohol, and decreased consumption levels among students who choose to drink. ‣ Campus Violence Prevention Project (CVPP): Served 19 student victims of dating violence, sexual assault, or stalking during fall 2012, the final semester of this Department of Justice grant-funded program. Worked out a campus contract with The Bridge to Hope in Menomonie to continue providing services to victims of sexual violence and to participate in campus prevention programming. ‣ Testing Center: Administer approximately 2,000 paper-pencil tests including UW Placement Exams (Math, English, and Foreign Language) for freshmen and Praxis exam for education majors; administer approximately 400 computer-based tests annually, including CLEP, MAT, and IT certification exams. Dean of Students Office ‣ Provides services and consultation for students who have encountered academic or behavioral difficulties; assists students who have unexpected illnesses or other emergency or disruptive events; serves as point of contact and referral for complaints and requests for assistance by faculty, staff, students and parents; leads the Students of Concern Risk Assessment Committee; provides general leadership to Student Services division and advises the Stout Student Association. ‣ Requests for assistance or information includes 552 disciplinary incidents, special circumstance university withdrawals for 38 students, support to students and staff for 314 student emergencies/absences, and risk assessment coordination and follow-up for 69 students. Disability Services ‣ The Disability Services Office believes that disability is an aspect of diversity. The office serves as a resource to students, faculty, and staff and provides support to the entire campus. The mission of the office is to ensure that students with disabilities have equal access and opportunities to all programs and services on campus. The main office is located in 206 Bowman Hall.
