20<strong>12</strong>-13 <strong>Fact</strong> <strong>Book</strong><br />

‣ The cluster <strong>of</strong> support services <strong>of</strong> the Student Services division <strong>of</strong> UW-<strong>Stout</strong> exists to help promote student academic and career<br />

success through skill development.<br />

‣ This division is comprised <strong>of</strong> the following areas: Advisement Center, Student Support Services-ASPIRE, Career Services,<br />

Counseling Center, Dean <strong>of</strong> Students Office, Disability Services, Educational Talent Search, Multicultural Student Services, and<br />

Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program. These areas are highlighted below.<br />

Advisement Center<br />

‣ The Advisement Center serves as an advising resource for all students, faculty and staff. It is located in the lower level <strong>of</strong> Bowman<br />

Hall, Rooms 11 and <strong>12</strong>. The Center provides the following services: first-year advising, first-year early alert notification and<br />

intervention, first-year probation student monitoring, career exploration advising and programming, new student (first-year and<br />

transfer) orientation and registration programs (summer, fall and spring), change <strong>of</strong> major processing, and special student advising<br />

and registration including the Youth Options Program. This past fall semester the Advisement Center staff coordinated and taught<br />

the one credit transition to college course, <strong>Stout</strong> Start.<br />

‣ During the 20<strong>12</strong>-2013 academic year the Advisement Center provided first-year and transfer student orientation and registration<br />

programs to 2,529 students. The Advisement Center staff served as academic advisors to freshmen, undecided and transfer students<br />

totaling 6,857 face-to-face contacts.<br />

ASPIRE -Student Support Services (Federally-funded TRIO Programs)<br />

‣ Two Student Support Services (SSS) programs are funded through the Department <strong>of</strong> Education providing the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Wisconsin</strong>-<strong>Stout</strong> with an annual allocation <strong>of</strong> $558,959 to provide college retention services for targeted students. In 20<strong>12</strong>-13 the<br />

SSS programs provided enhanced academic and retention programming for over 430 eligible students. The SSS-Disability grant<br />

serves a minimum <strong>of</strong> 160 students with disabilities and a SSS-Classic grant serves a minimum <strong>of</strong> 260 students who are primarily<br />

both first generation (neither parent earned a four-year college degree) and income eligible (receiving the PELL grant).<br />

‣ Students have access to a number <strong>of</strong> direct services and programming including (but not limited to): a two-credit college transition<br />

course, a seminar in career exploration, learning communities, individualized academic advisement, career planning, writing<br />

assistance, peer math support, cultural events, service learning and civic engagement activities, peer mentoring, financial literacy<br />

and graduate school planning workshops. Regular academic support meetings assure students are provided individualized services<br />
