University of Wisconsin-Stout Support Services Student Services 2012-13 Fact Book ‣ The cluster of support services of the Student Services division of UW-Stout exists to help promote student academic and career success through skill development. ‣ This division is comprised of the following areas: Advisement Center, Student Support Services-ASPIRE, Career Services, Counseling Center, Dean of Students Office, Disability Services, Educational Talent Search, Multicultural Student Services, and Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program. These areas are highlighted below. Advisement Center ‣ The Advisement Center serves as an advising resource for all students, faculty and staff. It is located in the lower level of Bowman Hall, Rooms 11 and 12. The Center provides the following services: first-year advising, first-year early alert notification and intervention, first-year probation student monitoring, career exploration advising and programming, new student (first-year and transfer) orientation and registration programs (summer, fall and spring), change of major processing, and special student advising and registration including the Youth Options Program. This past fall semester the Advisement Center staff coordinated and taught the one credit transition to college course, Stout Start. ‣ During the 2012-2013 academic year the Advisement Center provided first-year and transfer student orientation and registration programs to 2,529 students. The Advisement Center staff served as academic advisors to freshmen, undecided and transfer students totaling 6,857 face-to-face contacts. ASPIRE -Student Support Services (Federally-funded TRIO Programs) ‣ Two Student Support Services (SSS) programs are funded through the Department of Education providing the University of Wisconsin-Stout with an annual allocation of $558,959 to provide college retention services for targeted students. In 2012-13 the SSS programs provided enhanced academic and retention programming for over 430 eligible students. The SSS-Disability grant serves a minimum of 160 students with disabilities and a SSS-Classic grant serves a minimum of 260 students who are primarily both first generation (neither parent earned a four-year college degree) and income eligible (receiving the PELL grant). ‣ Students have access to a number of direct services and programming including (but not limited to): a two-credit college transition course, a seminar in career exploration, learning communities, individualized academic advisement, career planning, writing assistance, peer math support, cultural events, service learning and civic engagement activities, peer mentoring, financial literacy and graduate school planning workshops.
