The Discovery Center advances UW-<strong>Stout</strong>'s polytechnic focus <strong>of</strong> applied research by expanding the university's commitment to quality<br />

and innovation, transformative education and interdisciplinary collaboration. The center harnesses the tremendous expertise <strong>of</strong> UW-<strong>Stout</strong><br />

faculty, staff, students and other specialists in fostering discovery and innovation. By encompassing all <strong>of</strong> UW-<strong>Stout</strong>'s applied research<br />

efforts, the center's primary mission is to facilitate:<br />

• advancements in student research, preparing students in their areas <strong>of</strong> interest<br />

• connections <strong>of</strong> faculty expertise with industry and other researchers to solve challenges and innovate further<br />

• innovation-based solutions for business and industry to support their successes<br />

• advancements in economic development and new business start-ups in <strong>Wisconsin</strong><br />

Discovery Center services are provided by academic staff and faculty working in technical assistance units and focused technology<br />

centers, supported by funded research projects, community and industry partnerships, and knowledge transfer activities.<br />

Discovery Center Offerings and Services<br />

In 20<strong>12</strong>-2013:<br />

‣ Discovery Center projects involved faculty, staff and students in more than 200 collaborative applied projects.<br />

‣ The Discovery Center’s UW-<strong>Stout</strong> Manufacturing Outreach Center (SMOC) projects provided 135 companies with $34.6 million in<br />

new/retained sales, cost savings, and investments (plant or equipment, information systems or s<strong>of</strong>tware, workforce practices or<br />

employee skills) through the provision <strong>of</strong> on-site training seminars and 8 public seminars attended by 1<strong>12</strong> participants. In addition,<br />

the SMOC led 17 on-site workshops with manufacturers, training 302 employees. A total <strong>of</strong> 365 jobs were reported saved/created<br />

and the SMOC achieved a customer satisfaction rating <strong>of</strong> 8.64 (on a 10-point scale, with 10 being excellent). The two most<br />

important factors selected for the client choosing to work with MOC were staff expertise and their reputation for results.<br />

‣ The Discovery Center’s Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Education Programs and Services unit <strong>of</strong>fered 39 programs and served 3,755 individuals.<br />

‣ External Funding included grants, contracts, gifts or money and funded student research.<br />
