The Results Are In from our 2009 Wellness Fair
During the summer of 2009, D.H. Pace teamed up with BlueCross
BlueShield of Kansas City (BCBSKC) to offer employees and their
dependents over the age of 18 enrolled in our company insurance
plan, the opportunity to participate in a Wellness Fair and to complete
a Health Risk Assessment.
Forty-one percent of our eligible employees participated in this
event. The primary health risks identified were:
• high body weight • lack of physical activity
• high blood pressure • low compliance with
• smoking
preventive care exams
• high stress level
Based on these and other indicators, the Company is implementing
a Health and Wellness Initiative beginning later this
year. Wellness promotion programs and wellness tips will be offered
to employees to empower them to lead longer, healthier lives.
These programs will offer varying topics of interest and needs related
specifically to the health risk factors listed above and will be
communicated via several methods through your division’s Activity
Committee, including the quarterly employee newsletter, work place
posters, webinars, and our 2010 Wellness Fair, which will be held
during the second quarter of 2010.
Please watch for information that will be distributed within the
next few weeks that will provide you information on how you can
get started on a healthier lifestyle in 2010.
Ray Pate Retires!
Ray Pate, an installer with
Overhead Door Company of Atlanta,
retired on Monday, January
4, 2010, after 35 years with
the company.
Ray has been a great asset to
the company and will be
missed, but we wish him the
best of luck in retirement! Congratulations
and thank you, Ray,
for your 35 years of service!
Over the course of the last six weeks, I have
traveled to our eight annual award dinners
and visited each of our operating divisions. I
have now attended these events every year
for the last 30 years. This year I am especially
impressed with the optimism and determination
that I see on the part of our employees in
every location. In spite of a challenging economy
and stiff competition, I hear many stories
of victories won and new opportunities
discovered.
As a company, we have performed relatively
well in past recessions and 2009 has
been no exception. For the year, invoiced
sales increased to over $198 million. Thank
you for your contribution to these outstanding
results. The work you are doing to adjust
to a constantly changing marketplace is inspirational.
Even more impressive is the ongoing
commitment I find to sustain our core
principles.
Jim Collins, in his article Building your
Company’s Vision, writes, “Companies that
enjoy enduring success have core values and
a core purpose that remains fixed while their
business strategies and practices endlessly
adapt to a changing world.”
As a service company, it is critical to our
long-term success that we remain committed
to our core principles even as we face the
need to change. These principles include:
• consistently delivering great customer
service
• honesty and integrity in everything
we do
• effective teamwork and communication
• commitment to excellence
• strong competitive spirit
These principles form the unchanging foundation
of all successful service organizations.
We are no exception. Today we are blessed
with a strong reputation and position in the
marketplace thanks to the work of a large
number of dedicated employees over many
years. It is up to us to protect this legacy and
to build upon it by continually demonstrating
these core principles in our actions each and
every day.
My time with you at the award dinners
has reinforced my confidence these principles
are alive and well throughout our Organization
and my belief that as long as they remain
so our future is secure.
Thank you for your ongoing efforts in
serving our customers and representing our
Organization.
Divisions Support Those in Need During Holiday Season
Over the holidays, each division chose an organization or cause to
support and we were overwhelmed with just how much we were
able to give. Thank you to everyone who participated!
Overhead Door Company of Atlanta
We participated in the Marine Corps. Toys for Tots campaign during
November and December 2009. We included the toy campaign
information in our radio advertisements and offered a discount to
customers who donated toys. Employees also contributed,
and between customer and employee donations, we collected
in excess of 300 toys. During the year, we also took part in
the Habitat for Humanity new home construction project in Jonesboro,
GA. Several of our installers - Spencer Ashmore, Sam Davenport,
Mike Morris, Jonathan Tanner, Ken Thompson, and
Tommy Tuzar - worked after hours to install eight garage doors
and eight operators in one day to meet the project deadline.
Overhead Door Company of Kansas City and
D.H. Pace Facilities Group-KC
We continued the “Adopt-A-Family” relationship with the
Guadalupe Center and provided Christmas gifts for a family of
four and senior citizen women. We also felt the need to reach out
to military personnel that are related to our employees. Our list
consisted of six troops: four located within the U.S., one in Iraq,
and one in Japan. A care package containing necessities, snacks,
and Lowe’s gift cards (to those located in the U.S.) were delivered
by Christmas Day.
Overhead Door Company of St. Louis
We had a food drive for Centennial Christian Church Food Pantry.
We were able to supply over 20 large boxes of canned goods, 200
frozen chickens, oranges, and some extra cash. With this, the food
pantry was able to provide close to 200 families with a basket of
food for Christmas. It was a great feeling to help those families in
need during the holiday season. We learned about this organization
through Debra Carter, our residential service dispatcher, who
serves as the co-chairperson for the organization.
Overhead Door Company of Wichita
We had a great success this year in many ways. One of these successes
was our toy drive for Toys for Tots. We had several toys for
all ages that were donated by our staff. We hope to continue the
tradition next year and can hopefully increase our donations and
employee participation each year.
Overhead Door Company of Springfield
We decided to send care packages to two soldiers. One soldier is
the son of one of our field technicians, and the other is a former employee
that is serving in the military. We raised funds and sent each
a Christmas Card signed by everyone, with gift cards inside. We
chose this because there are a lot of veterans that work here and
we know it’s hard to be away from family for long periods of time.
We wanted to let them know that we appreciate what they do for
us and the sacrifices that they make to serve our country.
D.H. Pace Company/Ankmar-Colorado
We held a food drive in conjunction with the Food Bank of the Rockies
(FBR). We were able to fill four boxes with food and raised $60
to donate directly. We had excellent participation and FBR was very
appreciative. We also supported Cell Phones for Soldiers by donating
old cell phones. These were recycled and the funds were used to
send our troops phone cards. We had a great outpouring from both
our staff and our wholesale customers.
D.H. Pace Company-Corporate and
D.H. Pace Construction Services-KC
We held a coat and blanket drive for Project Warmth. We completely
filled two large bins and well surpassed our goal! It was a great feeling
to be able to help families in need during the holiday season and
the donation was greatly appreciated by Project Warmth.
D.H. Pace Company-Tempe
We made the choice to have a food drive for the United Food Bank
(UFB). UFB distributes food to over 250 different organizations, including
Boys and Girls Clubs of America and homeless shelters
statewide, and the requests for food from UFB has increased 60%,
unfortunately the donations have not. We donated whole grains,
peanut butter, canned fruits and vegetables with a goal to fill two
3 ft. x 2 ft. boxes. Our food drive was a great success and we plan
to head another one in the spring!
Teamwork and Code Expertise
Help Save $70k Sale!
Building Codes — Friend or Foe?
Jerry Rice (DHPU), working in conjunction with Erin McGaw
(OHD-KC) and Randy Batt (OHD Commercial New Construction
Supervisor), was able to use adopted codes to our advantage—and
our customer’s advantage—and stave off our
competitor’s advances. Great teamwork!
Most divisions have someone they can use internally to help
with code interpretations, but if you need help with a more complex
issue or have done all you can and need a fresh set of eyes
on the data, then give Jerry a call. Glad to help!
FireCheck ®
Well, OHD-Atlanta did it again! They booked some more inspection
business with a hospital and also received approval
from a repair quote based on the inspection from last year. Kudos
to the Entry Door Department team!
OHD-Kansas City has some smaller cities adopting the new
codes in 2010. Here’s hoping the Fire Marshals put some “teeth”
to enforcement.
Service Program Reports
Kevin Dunn, Mike Henley, Ben Kramer, and Tracie Folscroft
(DHP-Corporate) have completed the automated delivery of the
monthly Service Program reports. Nice Job!
New Survey Software Purchased
Because of the importance of feedback from various sources—employees,
customers, vendors, and sub-contractors—we have purchased
a more “robust” survey software application.
This new tool will allow us to pull and integrate data about the
customer directly from Baan into the survey software, allowing us
to more easily connect all the different factors about the install or
service with the survey results.
It also has a nice reporting feature set and the ability to do e-
mail alerts. Implementation is underway.
If you have any questions about Lean Six Sigma, surveys, codes,
or have an improvement idea, please e-mail Jerry Rice at
jerry.rice@dhpace.com, or call 816-480-2606.
