The Spencer Magnet Resource Directory
What is Spencer County? We don’t frequently ask ourselves this question, but may
find the answer more often than we think.
Whether it’s the water towers or the familiarity of a small town nestled among the
farms and rivers, as one reader wrote in, or the local restaurant to which you always take
your visitors, there are certain facets of this community, which make you feel at home.
What makes our community stand out? Although it’s impossible to sum up Spencer
County in 96 pages, we’ve done our best to give you a little insight into the groups,
events and people who make up our community.
The events we’ve chosen this year — the Spencer County Fair, The FFA Toy Show, the
Kentucky Gourd Show and Arts on Main, and Spencer County Octoberfest — present a
glimpse into what makes Spencer Countians proud. Whether it’s a celebratory festival or
a fundraiser to help an ailing family, Spencer County comes together like no other community
to showcase and help its people.
The next time you find yourself thinking about what this county means to you, we
hope you find a little taste of home in this magazine-like Spencer County Resource Directory
that you are holding in your hands right now.
Since 1867, The Spencer Magnet has been offering Spencer County a valuable source
of reliable information. Your community newspaper is a vital part in tracking this area’s
history, as well as packaging information of local importance in a way that no other area
publication does.
This annual resource directory is one of our biggest and best projects. Within its
pages you can find everything from how to contact your local government officials, to
information about the local school system to where to go in the community for recreation.
It’s a valuable publication that will be relevant all year long.
We hope that you find this resource directory, and, on a bigger scale, your community
newspaper, something that you don’t want to be without. The Spencer Magnet works
hard to cover the heartbeat of the community. From hard-hitting news, to heartwarming
human interest features to agriculture and education news, we are keeping our eyes
set on the topics that directly affect the lives of those who call Spencer County home.
Take a moment to flip through the pages of this resource directory. Familiarize yourself
with the community you call home. You are Spencer County. We are Spencer County.
And this is Spencer County.
Funeral Home, Inc.
Frederick Mathis built the beautiful, historic Spencer House as a stagecoach stop on Main Street in Taylorsville in 1836. Under the
proprietorship of Mr. Mathis and later, Mr. and Mrs. Isaiah Yocum, this venerable landmark had a fine reputation for hospitality.
Now in operation as Hall-Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer County’s Spencer House remains one of the area’s most
historically important landmarks and an architectural anchor on Taylorsville’s Main Street.
Hall-Taylor Funeral Home is honored to continue to serve
the Spencer County community in a way that preserves its
history for the future, keeping faith with the time honored
traditions of home, family and hospitality, while providing
Lake
Taylorsville Lake is situated about 25 miles
southeast of Louisville in Spencer, Nelson and
Anderson counties and named for nearby
Taylorsville. It was authorized under the Flood
Control Act of 1966, and was designed and built
by the Louisville District of the U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers.
The Corps operates the project for flood
control, quality water storage, outdoor
recreation and fish and wildlife preservation and
enhancement. The dam is about 34 miles from
Shepherdsville.
Construction on the lake began in 1974 and
became operational in January 1983, at a cost of
$103 million.
The Kentucky Department of Parks operates
camping area with a bathhouse, roads and
complete infrastructure. The RV campsites are
located approximately 500 feet past the park
office building on Park Road.
There are four boat ramps at the lake that the
park leases from the Corps: Possum Ridge, Van
Buren, Chowning Lane and Settlers Trace, also
The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife
Grades K-5
All our staff are passionate about working with children. Many have degrees
in early childhood or have had classes on child development to bring a
background of knowledge to the center. As required by law, our staff have the
proper certifications and background checks for employment at Little Stars,
and regular training such as CPR and First Aid are provided for the staff.
Families can be assured that their child will be loved, well cared for, and will
learn through a variety of experiences and lessons each day.
WHAT OUR FAMILIES ARE SAYING
“Little Stars Pre-School has been exactly what my 4 year-old needs. My only
wish is that they had opened sooner! We were in desperate need of a certified,
experienced pre-school teacher and we got it! Ms. Cheryl has been able to
introduce my son to new & creative ways to learn, all while getting him prepared
for kindergarten. He has been so proud of the fun projects he brings home and
can’t wait to share what he has learned. The best part - he is having a blast! Ms.
Cheryl has also been wonderful about communicating his daily activities and I
feel that we have a great partnership. Together Little Stars and my family make
a great team!” - Julie Jones
“We chose Little Stars after using an in-home childcare provider for about a year
and knew after meeting their caring staff that this was the right place for us! The
facility is very nice, clean, and there is a strong “family” atmosphere. Just in
the month or so that our son has been attending, his vocabulary has noticably
improved and he wakes up every morning asking to go to “school.” We are so
happy with our decision to place our son at Little Stars. They have embraced our
family from day one and seem to love him as if he has been there for years!”
- Brian, Erin & Tristan Crenshaw
“Since our son started going to Little Stars in March, it has been such a blessing
to our family. We wanted a program that would cover all the educational and
general growth concerns that we had for our son. Little Stars has fulfilled these
needs beyond our expectations. Our son has learned so much in such a short
period of time and he thoroughly loves to go every single day. He is always
excited at the end of the day to share with us what he has learned. His teacher,
Ms. Cheryl, is so awesome and is always available, and often exchanges
messages and pictures with us. We are so happy and pleased that we chose
Little Stars for our son.” - M. H.
“Little Stars is a great location. It is literally five minutes from our driveway to the
parking lot. The center is incredibly clean and our boys come home with clean
faces, clothes, and tushies (which didn’t always happen at our previous daycare).
Many times I will come to pick them up and my oldest (2 years-old) doesn’t
want to leave. The teacher-to-child ratio is appropriate for each age group. They
get one-on-one attention as well as the ability to be individuals. Our oldest has
learned a variety of signs and we have seen a huge increase in his vocabulary
and sentence structure. Our boys are very happy there; they are learning new
things, and they are safe - which is ultimately the most
important.” - Chris & Kelley Brady
2011, it was “Down Memory Lane,” and in 2012, it’s
“Superheroes.”
The event has a history of bringing in big
names, like Dukes of Hazzard star Sonny Shroyer,
who played Enos in the popular early ‘80s television
series, and country artist Trent Tomlinson, as well
as hometown favorites like Nashville recording
artist and songwriter Shannon Lawson. For more
Caring. Connecting.
Community.
A wise woman once had a dream to change the lives of
women for the better. Her hope was so contagious that,
one person at a time, her dream spread around the world.
Today, 45 years later, millions have been touched by the
legacy that Mary Kay Ash left. I’m proud to share in her
commitment of caring and connecting in communities –
just like ours – to help make a difference.

Hillview Academy is Spencer County’s
Alternative School. The goal of this
program is to teach students skills
that will help them become more
successful both now in school, and
their personal life, as well as later
in their adult lives. The program is
designed for students who have not
been successful in the traditional
school environment because of any
number of situations in their lives
hindering their ability to function
and learn effectively. The staff and
students at Hillview adhere to a strict
dress code. The faculty and staff
feel that this helps everyone feel
equal and creates a more positive
educational atmosphere.
