What is Spencer County? We don’t frequently ask ourselves this question, but may
find the answer more often than we think.
Whether it’s the water towers or the familiarity of a small town nestled among the
farms and rivers, as one reader wrote in, or the local restaurant to which you always take
your visitors, there are certain facets of this community, which make you feel at home.
What makes our community stand out? Although it’s impossible to sum up Spencer
County in 96 pages, we’ve done our best to give you a little insight into the groups,
events and people who make up our community.
The events we’ve chosen this year — the Spencer County Fair, The FFA Toy Show, the
Kentucky Gourd Show and Arts on Main, and Spencer County Octoberfest — present a
glimpse into what makes Spencer Countians proud. Whether it’s a celebratory festival or
a fundraiser to help an ailing family, Spencer County comes together like no other community
to showcase and help its people.

health, alcohol and other drug abuse, and
developmental disabilities. In Spencer County,
Seven Counties offers a comprehensive array

activities and promoting positive non-use

LIHEAP: (Low-Income Home Energy Assistance
Program) provides assistance toward heating
expenses during the winter months.
Weatherization: provides energy related
home repairs (heating systems, insulation, air
infiltration, etc.) to help lower heating and
cooling expenses.
Self-Sufficiency: program targets families and
individuals who are working toward becoming
self-sufficient.
Services include case management, goal setting,
employment skill development, educational
enhancement, household financial management
and financial support.
Winter care: Can pay toward electric bills from
participating utility companies when a client is
faced with a disconnect.
Emergency Assistance: Provides financial
assistance with food, utility bills, food, medicine,

Corps of Engineers
The corps operates a Visitors Center, Dam
Overlook Area, and Tailwater Area that
includes picnic sites, bank fishing on the
lake and river, and nature trails. A rustic log
schoolhouse and cabin from early 1800
Spencer County are restored near the Corps’
Visitors Center. A short interpretive trail
explaining the local history is located near
the site.
Taylorsville Lake State Park
Located at KY 248, minutes from Taylorsville.
The park features a full service marina, ramp,
slip rental, fishing and pontoon boat rental.

Relay for Life
Joy Thompson, director.
Relay for Life is an annual event started in
1985. It has become the American Cancer
Society signature fundraising event. It is
a year-round project comprised of teams
raising money in the fight against cancer.
On Relay night, teams of families, friends
and businesses gather in an overnight
celebration of survivorship and honoring and
remembering loved ones who have lost the
battle and those continuing the fight against
cancer. The ultimate goal of Relay for Life is
eliminating cancer. Held on the third Friday
and Saturday of June each year.
Spencer County Fair
Mid to late July each year at the Spencer
County Fair grounds. The fair features more
than a week’s worth of activities, with
carnival rides, pageants, exhibits and more.

The FFA Toy Show
The Spencer County High School FFA program is
one of the strongest in the area, if not the state. One
of the group’s signature events is the FFA Toy Show,
which is approaching its 23rd year.
The event takes place the second weekend in
December and was started by Spencer Countian
Jason Karrer when he was a chapter officer.
The show attracts around 70 vendors from 15
different states, and attendance is usually near 2,000.
Attractions include toy collectables, Freddie Farmer’s
Fun Farm, farmscapes and visits by Santa.

& Arts on Main
The Kentucky Gourd Show has
called Spencer County home for
the last 18 years.
Each year in May, a day full
of classes and workshops takes
place on Friday at the First Baptist
Church fellowship hall on Main
Street.
The gourd show itself runs
Saturday and Sunday at Spencer
County Elementary School on Ky.
44. The show features hundreds
of pieces of artwork from artist all
over the country.
For the past several years, the
Taylorsville Main Street Committee
has hosted the Arts on Main arts
fair on the same weekend as
the gourd show to spread the
excitement all the way down Main
Street.
The gourd show benefits
from those attending the arts fair,
the arts fair benefits from those
attending the gourd show and
the attendees get two events in
essentially one stop.

Taylorsville
Lake
Taylorsville Lake is situated about 25 miles
southeast of Louisville in Spencer, Nelson and
Anderson counties and named for nearby
Taylorsville. It was authorized under the Flood
Control Act of 1966, and was designed and built
by the Louisville District of the U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers.
The Corps operates the project for flood
control, quality water storage, outdoor
recreation and fish and wildlife preservation and
enhancement. The dam is about 34 miles from
Shepherdsville.
Construction on the lake began in 1974 and
became operational in January 1983, at a cost of
$103 million.
The Kentucky Department of Parks operates
4,282 acres under a lease agreement with the
Corps of Engineers.
With the opening of a $2.1 million
campground at Taylorsville Lake State Park,
campers can stay at one of 45 recreational vehicle
campsites or a horse camping area.
The campground includes a registration
building, 45 RV campsites with electrical and
water hookups and bathhouse, a 10-pad horse
camping area with a bathhouse, roads and
complete infrastructure. The RV campsites are
located approximately 500 feet past the park
office building on Park Road.
There are four boat ramps at the lake that the
park leases from the Corps: Possum Ridge, Van
Buren, Chowning Lane and Settlers Trace, also
home to Taylorsville Lake Dock and Marina.
The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife
Resources has primary responsibility for law
enforcement and water safety on the lake.
The marina is owned and operated by
independent business owners.
A 20-acre area near the state park is a
watchable wildlife area, maintained by the
Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife.
The Corps’ Visitor Center is located on Ky. 2239
off Ky. 44 East.

Spencer County Octoberfest
Octoberfest is a yearly two-day festival, which
used to be referred to as Homecoming. Celebrated
the first weekend in October each year, the event is
planned by the Octoberfest committee and features,
pageants, concerts and a parade.
Octoberfest usually comes with a theme — in
2011, it was “Down Memory Lane,” and in 2012, it’s
“Superheroes.”
The event has a history of bringing in big
names, like Dukes of Hazzard star Sonny Shroyer,
who played Enos in the popular early ‘80s television
series, and country artist Trent Tomlinson, as well
as hometown favorites like Nashville recording
artist and songwriter Shannon Lawson. For more

The Spencer County Cooperative Extension
Service is an outreach of the University of
Kentucky. Our mission, simply stated, is to make
a difference in the lives of Spencer Countians
through research-based education. Jointly with
our other land grant partner, Kentucky State
University, we are able to provide information
and programs dealing with Agriculture and
Natural Resources, Family and Consumer
Sciences, 4-H/Youth Development, and
Community and Economic Development.
The staff at the extension office is constantly
working with other local groups to help sponsor
educational programs, such as the Healthfair
and Readifest, or our most popular communty
educational program, the S.O.S. Program, which
is held every year in March and April.

Planning and Zoning Commission
The Taylorsville-Spencer County Joint Planning
Commission is a recommending body of
eight persons appointed, four city members
by the mayor of the City of Taylorsville and
four members by the county judge-executive.
The commission meets on the first and third
Thursdays of each month with the authority to
call special meetings as necessary. This board
is compiled for the purpose of reviewing and
overseeing proposed amendments to the
official zoning maps of the city and county
as well as subdivision developments. With
their consideration at a public hearing, a
recommendation is made to the appropriate
governing body for final action. The planning
commission is also responsible for preparation
of updates to the Zoning Ordinance and
Subdivision Regulations as well as the
Comprehensive Plan with their recommendation
