What is <strong>Know</strong> The <strong>Score</strong>?<br />
<strong>Know</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Score</strong> is <strong>the</strong> corporate brand for media campaigns, a website, a 24-hour<br />
information line and drug information materials, which links toge<strong>the</strong>r all national<br />
and local organisations involved in tackling drugs misuse in Scotland.<br />
<strong>Know</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Score</strong> spans a broad range <strong>of</strong> partnership activities; its fundamental<br />
aim is to sign-post <strong>the</strong> public towards quality information and advice about drugs<br />
misuse across Scotland.<br />
<strong>Know</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Score</strong> is used by <strong>the</strong> Scottish Executive, national agencies and local<br />
bodies for information campaigns and materials. This draws on best practice to<br />
ensure access to consistent and reliable information.<br />
About this <strong>Directory</strong><br />
This <strong>Directory</strong> is divided into three separate sections; National Organisations,<br />
Drug Action Teams and Local and Community <strong>Services</strong>.<br />
National organisations are made up <strong>of</strong> a range <strong>of</strong> key partners who are involved in<br />
tackling drugs in Scotland. Many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m produce materials about <strong>the</strong> work <strong>the</strong>y are<br />
involved in at a national and local level.<br />
Drug Action Teams are <strong>the</strong> focal point for local action on drug misuse.<br />
They comprise <strong>of</strong> representatives from key agencies involved in tackling drug<br />
misuse locally, including local authorities, police, health services, prisons and<br />
voluntary sector organisations. As a central point <strong>of</strong> contact, <strong>the</strong>y can provide<br />
details about a number <strong>of</strong> local initiatives and services.<br />
Many local and community services exist across Scotland and <strong>of</strong>fer specialist<br />
help, support and advice to meet a range <strong>of</strong> needs relating to drugs misuse.<br />
A number <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m provide specific information and guidance on drugs issues.<br />
The <strong>Directory</strong> has been produced by <strong>the</strong> Scottish Drugs Forum (SDF) in association<br />

The Scottish Executive is responsible for drugs policy, and for<br />
providing funding to support a wide range <strong>of</strong> services in Scotland.<br />
The Executive’s Drug Strategy is built on four key <strong>the</strong>mes:<br />
tackling <strong>the</strong> availability <strong>of</strong> drugs in Scottish communities; treating<br />
and rehabilitating those who have developed drug problems;<br />
engaging with communities and protecting <strong>the</strong>m from drug-related<br />
crime; and, evaluating and informing young people about <strong>the</strong> risks<br />
from drugs. The Strategy is delivered in partnership with<br />
Scotland’s 22 Drug Action Teams, and with statutory and<br />
voluntary organisations.<br />

The National Drug Misuse in Scotland website is managed by <strong>the</strong><br />
Drug Misuse Information Strategy Team <strong>of</strong> ISD Scotland on<br />
behalf <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Scottish Executive. The aim <strong>of</strong> this site is to inform<br />
those involved in tackling Scotland’s problem drug use and act as<br />
a national focal point for pr<strong>of</strong>essionals and o<strong>the</strong>r interested<br />

NHS Health Scotland came into operation on 1 April 2003<br />
following a merger between HEBS and <strong>the</strong> Public Health <strong>Institute</strong><br />
<strong>of</strong> Scotland. The organisation gives leadership to <strong>the</strong> health<br />
education effort in Scotland and is responsible for <strong>the</strong> delivery <strong>of</strong><br />
national programmes that seek to improve Scotland’s health.<br />

Scotland’s NHS Boards and Primary Care Trusts support a wide<br />
range <strong>of</strong> services to treat those affected by drug misuse. These<br />
services are <strong>of</strong>ten delivered in partnership with o<strong>the</strong>r<br />
organisations, such as local authorities (eg rehabilitation),<br />
specialist addiction services (eg counselling and<br />
detoxification) frequently provided by voluntary sector<br />
bodies, and through contractual arrangements with General<br />
Practitioners and pharmacists (eg substitute prescribing).<br />

The aim <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Scotland Against Drugs Campaign is to help<br />
prevent drug misuse and its consequences impacting on local<br />
communities in Scotland through programmes <strong>of</strong> information and<br />
community action achieved with <strong>the</strong> support <strong>of</strong> Scotland’s<br />
business community.<br />

Crimestoppers enables people to call a single nationwide<br />
freephone number, 0800 555 111, at any time with information<br />
about any crime, including drugs-related crime. Calls are free,<br />
confidential and cannot be traced. Crimestoppers supports <strong>the</strong><br />
Scottish Police Service and <strong>the</strong> Scottish Drug Enforcement<br />
Agency in reducing <strong>the</strong> availability <strong>of</strong> drugs in Scotland.<br />

Scottish Drugs Forum is <strong>the</strong> national non-government drugs<br />
policy and information agency working in partnership with o<strong>the</strong>rs<br />
to co-ordinate effective responses to drug use in Scotland. It is<br />
<strong>the</strong> umbrella agency for all those concerned with tackling drug use<br />
in Scotland. SDF aims to support and represent at both local and<br />
national levels a wide range <strong>of</strong> interests, promoting collaborative,<br />
evidence-based responses to drug use.<br />
