As many of you know, construction 

is well under way for Shodair Family House. This 

project addresses a weakness we identified in our 

continuum of care. Currently, many families 

experience difficulty traveling to Shodair to visit 

their children and receive intensive family therapy. 

The lack of family visits and participation lessens 

or delays the recovery of our patients and their 

successful return to family and community. 

Intensive family therapy, as well as parenting 

education classes and family visits, are critical to 

long-term recovery and community integration. 

In the past, distance and lack of accommodations 

on our hospital campus have lessened the potential 

for meeting this critical goal. Creation of Shodair 

Family House provides us with the opportunity to 

increase the potential for success in these areas. 

In addition, use of the new facility for professional 

teaching opportunities will enhance the abilities 

of our mental health professionals. 

The costs of construction for Shodair Family House 

are being covered by generous grants and donations. 

However, we still need funds to furnish and equip 

this new facility. If you would like to help, contact 

our new Foundation Director, Tom Figarelle. 

As I write this, we are busy with Christmas 

preparations for the children and teens who will be 

in our care during the holidays. For many of our 

patients, this is the hardest time of the year. Some 

of them have never had a joyous Christmas, while 

others will have to be away from family and friends. 

We have always been able to make Christmas at 

Shodair special, thanks to thoughtful support from 

generous individuals, State employees, and 

businesses here in Helena and from every 

corner of Montana. 

2012 was a year of change for Shodair as we 

prepared to meet the needs of our patients and 

their families into our next century. We welcome 

every one of you to experience the unveiling of 

Shodair Family House when it's complete in 

April 2013. While it's easy to see our external 

improvements, more changes are occurring within 

the hospital to improve patient care. Once again, 

Shodair Children's Hospital received the Jeff Martin 

Award for Excellence. Our patient outcomes and 

satisfaction surveys continue to rate us very high. 

And while the data shows we are doing well, we're 

always striving to do even better through our 

quality improvement program. As we prepare for 

changes on the healthcare horizon, we're confident 

we'll be positioned to continue providing quality 

care to Montana's children and their families.

A Christmas 

Away 

from 

HOME

Shodair Children’s Hospital 

Last Christmas was a very unique 

experience for me here at Shodair Children’s Hospital. 

I’ve worked at many other psychiatric facilities, but I 

had never seen such dedication, creativity, and 

enthusiasm on the part of the staff as I saw at Shodair 

during the holidays. Such a challenge making sure 

there are gifts for all! And such a variety of patients: 

Those on our acute care unit, who may be admitted 

on Christmas Eve with little time for preparation, and 

those on our residential treatment units, who 

frequently are in State custody and may really be the 

“orphans” of today’s times. No families, no passes 

home—just the staff to make the day special. 

I watched in awe as one of the hospital’s 

conference rooms became Santa’s workshop, full of 

presents for children of all ages and staff from every 

level taking time to carefully wrap each gift. I recall 

that special feeling I got when I needed a break from 

my paperwork and I decided to do some “wrapping 

time.” I recognized the names of two teenage 

girls who would be receiving the woolly hats and 

socks I wrapped, and knew one of them would see no 

family over the holiday. Trained as I am to detach, I 

still got that feeling in the pit of my stomach and said a 

little prayer for her…and tied several extra bows and 

curled the ribbon, trying to make the present stand out. 

This year, Christmas will be another unique experience 

for me. It’s my turn to be on call Christmas Day. Yes, 

I know the children receiving treatment at Shodair 

during the holidays are unique in many ways. Most 

families and children want to be home over Christmas. 

If children are in treatment at Shodair, they are the 

neediest of all. So I prepare myself to do what I can to 

make their holiday special. 

This holiday season, if you’re fortunate enough to have 

what you need, why not consider a gift that will help 

children like Sara and the many others we treat here at 

Shodair Children’s Hospital? Your unrestricted holiday

the resources to make this a

Reunion

“ 

The following story is a composite, inspired by the 

children I have treated over the past 22 years in the 

Northwest and my new home state of Montana: 

My name is Sara. My grandma raised me for 

as long as I can remember. I’m 10 now. I 

never knew my daddy. I know my mom 

wasn’t supposed to tell me this, but he’s in 

prison now. I know Grandma was really 

mad at my mom when she told me, 

because I snuck out of my room 

late one night and heard her 

yelling at my mom over 

the phone...and my 

Grandma never 

yelled—ever. 

My family is just her 

and me. I think my 

mom left me 

because I was really 

a brat. I went to 

counseling because 

Grandma made me. I 

didn’t want to go. Grandma 

and the counselor lady told me 

my Mommy left me because she drank 

too much. I’m still not sure…I can be a brat 

sometimes, but Grandma loves me anyway. 

Christmas with Grandma was so good. 

We’re poor, but we always went to church 

and somehow Santa always knew what I 

wanted. Even after I found out Santa wasn’t 

for real, I always got what I wanted. I 

pretended I believed in Santa until last 

year. I didn’t want to hurt Grandma’s 

feelings, but she figured out I knew Santa 

wasn’t real and that I was pretending. 

Grandma is smart. 

I recognized the names

Now comes the really hard part: Grandma 

is old and gets sick a lot. She’s always at 

the doctor. This year, on the last day of 

school before Christmas, I got called to the 

office. Grandma is in the hospital with a 

breathing tube and these two ladies tell 

me I’m going to a foster home. “No way!” 

I shouted. “I want to be with my 

Grandma, now!” 

I don’t know what happened next, 

really. I blacked out, scared 

and mad—my heart and 

head racing. At the 

hospital, they told me 

I hit those ladies and 

had to be restrained. 

Police came… and 

I will spend 

Christmas at 

Shodair in Helena. 

Well, I can tell you 

now, what a neat place. 

I wish I was with Grandma, 

but everyone was so nice! My 

counselor talked to Grandma’s doctor. 

My social worker came to see me even 

though I gave her a black eye. I cried. I 

felt so bad! On Christmas morning, there 

were lots of presents and a big man with a 

guitar singing Christmas carols and there 

was lots of good food. 

At Shodair, I got to make friends. One boy 

told me he was in foster care and his foster 

parents were really nice! Best of all, soon 

after Christmas, I got to talk to Grandma. 

Her voice was really hoarse from the 

breathing tube, but she told me to be 

good so I could visit her soon. 

Yes, there is a Santa after all!

Adventures 

of a 

Champion 

It’s been a busy year for Samantha 

Faulkner, Montana’s 2012 Children’s Miracle Network 

Hospitals Champion. After making appearances at 

CMN/Shodair events like Miracle Treat Day, this 

charming 10-year-old from Ulm joined other young 

CMN ambassadors in Washington DC in September. 

There, the Champions and their families toured the 

White House and met President Obama. Next, 

they flew to Orlando, Florida to attend the annual 

Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Celebration 

at Walt Disney World. 

“I’ll remember it forever,” 

Samantha said of her 

adventures. “I really liked 

meeting everyone, 

especially the Champions 

from New Jersey and 

Wisconsin and their families. 

We’re hopefully going 

to see each other again next 

summer,” she added. 

Samantha and her mother, Erin, have both been seen 

by the genetics team at Shodair Children’s Hospital for 

a condition called Stickler Syndrome. Samantha and 

the other CMN Champions represent children’s health 

care needs and the hospitals that provide criticallyneeded 

care to young patients throughout the nation. 

Children's Miracle Network Hospitals, the alliance 

of premier hospitals for children, is a non-profit 

organization dedicated to saving and improving the 

lives of children by raising funds for children’s hospitals 

across North America. Shodair Children’s Hospital is 

proud to be Montana’s only Children’s Miracle 

Network Hospital.

Shodair 

Family House 

Construction 

Underway 

On a sunny July morning, 

construction of Shodair Children's Hospital's 

much-anticipated Family House began on 

campus. This beautiful new $1.2 million 

facility will provide a place for up to six families 

to stay while visiting their children in treatment 

at Shodair, as well as serving as a space for 

outpatient therapy, meetings, and 

professional education. 

Funding sources for Shodair Family House 

include a $500,000 challenge grant from the 

Montana Mental Health Settlement Trust, a 

$225,000 grant from the Murdock Charitable 

Trust, and contributions from generous donors 

across the state. 

“Shodair Family House will make a significant 

difference in our ability to fulfill our vision and 

mission,” said Shodair Children's Hospital 

Administrator Jack Casey. “Many families we 

serve are in financial need. Now, we'll be able 

to provide them with a place to stay when they 

visit their children and participate in family 

therapy, which is vital for recovery. Shodair 

Family House will help provide the means to 

ensure long-term success and independence 

for the patients in our care.” 

The new building, which measures 8,100 

square feet, should be completed by April or 

May of 2013. It was designed by Schlenker & 

McKittrick Architects (SMA) of Helena. SMA 

also designed Shodair's acute care wing, 

which was completed in 2006. 

Shodair Children's Hospital provides care 

regardless of a patient's ability to pay. Last 

year alone, Shodair provided over $3 million in 

uncompensated care to Montana's families. 

Shovels for the ground breaking were turned into colorful 

works of art by Shodair patients.

Previously, Tom served as the Director of 

Development at Montana State University-Great 

Falls since 2006. While at the College, Tom was 

the campus's lead professional charged with the 

advancement of philanthropic support for student 

scholarships and construction projects, efforts that 

involved the establishment of the institution's 

Development Board and first successful capital 

campaign. Tom was also the College's principal 

staff for governmental affairs, advocating campus 

priorities to the Montana Legislature and the 

state's Congressional delegation. 

Tom earned a bachelor's degree in political 

science from the University of Montana and a 

master’s of teaching, with an emphasis in social 

science education, from the University of Southern 

California in Los Angeles. 

Since 2006, Tom has also served as a 

Commissioned Officer in the Montana Army 

National Guard, presently serving as a company 

commander in Helena.

lifestyle. For the children and families served at Shodair Children's 

Hospital, relationships simply save lives. 

All those serving in Shodair's psychiatric and genetic services offer a 

critical relationship to those who come through the hospital's doors 

on a daily basis. Rooted in the emotions of care, compassion, trust, 

and love, these relationships save lives and offer the promise of a 

healthy future for many Montana children and families.

A gift to Shodair Children's Hospital 

can be designed in a way that fits 

your charitable goals and provides 

you with optimal tax benefits. For 

example, the timing of a gift can be 

personalized to your needs so the gift 

is made in one lump sum or over a 

period of years. Donated assets can 

also be individualized. While cash 

gifts are most common, there are 

many other ways to fund your gift 

that may be more beneficial. 

Some of the common ways to 

fund a gift include: 

• Cash - A quick and basic way of 

making a donation that qualifies for a 

charitable income tax deduction. 

• Stocks and Securities - Appreciated 

stocks and securities may be given 

without regard for capital gains taxes, 

are easily transferred, and qualify for 

a charitable income tax deduction. 

• Property - Both real estate and 

tangible personal property can be 

given without regard for capital gains 

taxes and qualify for a charitable 

income tax deduction. 

• Life Insurance - A gift of a paid-up 

insurance policy that is no longer 

needed, a new policy, or a “premium 

due” policy can provide either 

immediate or future support for 

Shodair and qualifies for a charitable 

income tax deduction. You can also 

designate Shodair as a beneficiary of 

the plan, which would provide the 

hospital with future support. 

• Retirement Plan Assets - Currently, 

those 70 or older can transfer up to 

$100,000 annually from a traditional 

IRA, which is considered a required

Shodair Soccer Classic celebrates 

thirteenth year; spotlights Montana's 

top student soccer stars

A summertime favorite 

the Shodair Soccer Classic, presented 

this year by Montana State Fund, 

once again thrilled Montana soccer 

fans on July 28 at Carroll College's 

Nelson Stadium. In its thirteenth 

season, the highly-competitive event 

began with the kick-off for the 

women's game in the evening, 

followed by the men's game. 

The women's teams battled to a final 

score of 3-2 in favor of Team East for 

the first time since 2008. The men's 

game was decided after a penalty 

shoot out after a 1-1 tie, with Team 

West finishing with a 6-5 advantage. 

This year's Mountain Dew MVP 

Awards went to Helena High's 

Dylan Allen (Men's Team West) and 

Lexi Pyette of Great Falls (Women's 

Team East). Both trophies were 

presented by television sports 

personality Evan Weborg of 

Montana's News Station and Montana's 

2012 Children's Miracle Network Champion 

Samantha Faulkner. 

The annual Soccer Classic features top student 

athletes from high schools all across the state. 

Through a rigorous screening process, over 80 

outstanding young men and women are selected to 

participate each year. In addition to having been 

selected as All-State and All-Conference high 

school players in Class AA or A, they must have 

demonstrated academic achievement, leadership, 

and citizenship. Several of the selected players 

received athletic scholarships to continue their 

soccer careers this fall at major colleges and 

universities across the country. 

A talented coaching staff from 

around the state was on hand to 

guide the teams. Many have winning 

records in state tournaments, and 

their skills helped assure top-level 

competition. Coaches included: 

Mike Meloy of Helena, Greg Shifflett 

of Hamilton, Megan Parish, Crystal 

McCamis, and Zach Robbins of 

Billings, Ashley Plummer of 

Belgrade, Jay Anderson of 

Frenchtown, Keane Hamilton 

of Missoula, and Jeff Dickerson 

of Livingston. 

The Classic is a labor of love for a 

group of hard-working volunteers 

and hospital employees. A small 

army of people contributed their 

time, effort, and enthusiasm to plan, 

coordinate, and execute a busy fourday 

event that included feeding, 

housing, and entertaining coaches 

and players from around Montana. 

Last year, Shodair provided more than $3.4 

million dollars in uncompensated care for at-risk 

children and youth from around the state. Support 

generated from events like the Soccer Classic and 

the Children's Miracle Network Telethon help 

ensure that these services remain available for 

those in need. 

Shodair Children's Hospital would like to thank 

the businesses, organizations, and individuals who 

donated time, money, services, and goods to make 

the thirteenth annual Shodair Soccer Classic a 

success. Their support makes the event possible a 

nd demonstrates their commitment to the wellbeing 

of Montana's youth and communities.

Having a Ball: Soccer Classic athletes 

host free skills clinic for area youth 

The skies were overcast, but there were more than enough smiles to 

brighten Nelson Stadium throughout the free pre-game youth soccer 

clinic held July 27. Nearly 200 Helena area youth ages 3 through 12 

gathered the day before the Shodair Soccer Classic to learn new skills 

from the all-star athletes. 

Despite the cool weather, the kids moved from station to station 

across the field, learning a new skill at each stop. It was hard to tell who was 

having more fun: the athletes or the kids. “It was really cool just to share our 

love of soccer with all of these kids,” said Helena High grad Mykaylee Verworn 

(Women's Team West). “It's great to be able to give back.”

Sharing the Warmth: Quilts for Kids 

For a child admitted to one of 

Shodair's psychiatric treatment units, little things 

can mean a lot. And things that bring warmth and 

comfort can be especially important. Fortunately 

for our children, generous individuals and groups 

across Montana have taken it upon themselves 

to provide those two elements 

in the form of hand-made 

blankets and quilts. 

Each year, the hospital receives 

bundles of warm, colorful blankets 

and quilts from kind-hearted 

crafters and donors. The fruits of 

their artistry and generosity go to 

patients admitted to Shodair's 

acute and residential treatment 

units. The cozy coverings do more 

than just adorn patients' beds: 

They are symbols of warmth and caring 

that are often carried to activities on the units. 

The generous people who make these quilts and 

blankets do so for a number of reasons, but the 

number one motivator is to make a child feel 

good. Shodair would like to thank these caring 

people who contributed time, effort, and materials 

for blankets and quilts for our kids in 2012. 

If you'd like to help, cozy blankets and quilts 

are needed year-round at Shodair. We project 

a need for 800 blankets/quilts in 2013. 

Here are some things to keep in mind: 

• Many of our patients have sensory issues. 

Quilts or blankets made of soft 

material, especially fleece, are 

preferred. No-sew tied fringe 

blankets are particularly popular 

with our children. Hospital policy 

does not allow us to accept knit or 

crocheted items, such as afghans. 

• Shodair primarily serves children 

ages 4 - 17. The quilts should be 

twin bed sized. We generally 

tend to need more “boy” colors 

or patterns than those for girls. 

Popular themes are peace signs, 

bright colors, tie-dye, themes with a Native 

American flair, sports teams, etc.

24th Annual 

Telethon 

Raises over 

$550,000 for 

Montana's 

Children 

The 2012 Shodair/Children's Miracle Network 

telethon once again proved that generous people all across Montana want to 

make a difference in the lives of children. 

On Saturday, June 2, numerous Montana businesses and individuals made 

miracles happen for children and families all across the state. They did so by 

donating funds, time, goods, and services for Shodair Children's Hospital's 2012 

telethon broadcast. With phone banks manned by volunteers from businesses 

and organizations in Helena, the hospital launched its annual day-long 

fundraising event to benefit Montana children. The event was broadcast live 

from Shodair on Montana Television Network / CBS affiliates around the state. 

“Thanks to loyal and caring friends, the phones were kept ringing with 

pledges and donations to help Montana's children and families,” said 

Shodair Children's Hospital Administrator Jack Casey. “The generosity 

of these viewers makes it possible for the hospital to continue offering 

critically needed psychiatric care and medical genetics services 

across the state.” 

Shodair's telethon was part of the national Children's Miracle 

Network (CMN) Celebration broadcast. This 21-hour television 

special, featuring celebrity appearances and inspirational stories 

from CMN hospital across the country, is broadcast each year over 

a network of television stations across the country. It is the signature 

fundraising event for Children's Miracle Network hospitals nationwide. 

Shodair is Montana's only Children's Miracle Network hospital 

and, as a non-profit facility, depends on donations like those raised 

during the telethon to continue offering its services.

During the day-long broadcast, viewers all over Montana heard inspiring stories 

from individuals and business representatives who talked about their reasons 

for supporting the hospital and Children's Miracle Network. Many donors and 

Children's Miracle Network corporate sponsors came from locations around 

the state to personally present their contributions and work the phone banks 

throughout the day and evening. Staff members from Shodair's psychiatry, 

medical genetics, nursing, and education departments were also on hand to 

offer additional information about services available to families.

Viewers were touched by the stories of Samantha Faulkner, 

Montana's 2012 Children's Miracle Network Champion, and her 

mom, Erin Faulkner, who have both been followed by Shodair's 

genetic specialists for a condition known as Stickler Syndrome. 

Returning hosts included Montana broadcast personalities Amanda 

Venegas from Billings, Katie Stukey of Great Falls, and Russ Thomas 

of Missoula. Joining the fun this year as new hosts were Shannon 

Newth of Helena, Ted Dawson of Bozeman, and Miss Montana 

2011 Veronika Ohlinger of Red Lodge. The Miss Montana program, 

through its association with the Miss America organization, supports 

Shodair and Children's Miracle Network fundraising efforts. The Miss 

America organization has selected Children's Miracle Network as its 

national platform. 

For the third time in Shodair's telethon history, the total pledges 

during the event topped the half-million dollar mark, coming in at 

$550,769. Last year, Shodair Children's Hospital provided more 

than $3.4 million in uncompensated care and services to Montana's 

families. Nearly 60% of Shodair's patients come from lowincome 

families.

donate food to feed the small 

army, whose members arrive 

early on the morning of the 

telethon and work until 1:00 a.m. While producing the telethon is a 

lot of work, everyone enjoys the event and the opportunity to work 

together for a most important cause: Montana's kids.

Great Clips Miracle Balloon Campaign 

As part of its national affiliation with Children’s 

Miracle Network Hospitals, Great Clips locations in Bozeman, Butte, 

Great Falls, and Helena raised funds for Shodair by selling the familiar red 

and yellow paper balloons during the month of October. Customers who 

purchased a CMN balloon for a $1 donation received a $2 off coupon for 

their next haircut. Thank you, Great Clips! 

Helena’s Northside Center Great Clips sold over 

750 balloons in October. 

IT’S GONNA BE GREAT ® 

Miracle Jeans Day 

On September 12, Montana Credit Unions employees 

across the state traded their traditional work attire for jeans to help raise funds 

for kids at Montana’s only Children's Miracle Network Hospital—Shodair. 

For a suggested donation of $5 per person, MCU employees at 28 locations 

raised nearly five times the amount of money raised on Miracle Jeans Day 

2011, for a total this year of almost $5,320. Valley Federal Credit Union in 

Billings was the top fundraiser, and President/CEO Mike Silvers personally 

matched the amount raised by Valley FCU employees.

Extra Life 

What if there was a way to help kids and play games at the 

same time? That's exactly how CMN Hospitals' Extra Life fundraiser works. 

On Saturday, October 20, gamers across the state participated in Extra Life 

2012, a gaming marathon in support of Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. 

Participants played any kind of game, including board games, asking friends 

and family to sponsor them by the hour. Nearly 30 Shodair supporters raised 

over $3,800, more than double last year's total.

ACE Champions Balloon Campaign 

Once again, ACE Hardware stores across 

Montana sold paper balloons in support of Children’s Miracle 

Network Hospitals during the month of October to raise funds for 

Shodair Children’s Hospital. Instead of the familiar red and yellow 

balloons, these were special, featuring Montana’s 2012 Children’s 

Miracle Network Hospitals Champion, Samantha Faulkner. A total 

of 39 stores participated in this year’s ACE Champion Balloon 

Campaign.

Miracle Treat Day: 

A Blizzard of Support 

for Montana Kids 

Once again, Dairy Queen stores 

all over Montana participated in Miracle Treat Day 

on July 26 to benefit the children and programs at 

Shodair Children’s Hospital. Depending on the 

store’s location, either 100% of the proceeds of 

Blizzard sales or $1.00 per Blizzard sold went to 

benefit Shodair. This year, 19 locations in 12 

towns across the state joined in on the sweetest 

Children’s Miracle Network event of the year. 

Not only did the seventh annual Miracle Treat Day help Shodair’s children 

one Blizzard at a time, but in many cases, several Blizzards at a time. 

Through generous community supporters, the efforts of numerous volunteers, 

and the astounding participation of Dairy Queen owners and staff across 

Montana, this year’s Miracle Treat Day did not disappoint. 

Employees at several DQ locations across Montana also challenged 

themselves to a friendly competition to see who could sell the most Children’s 

Miracle Network Hospital balloons, many selling every one of them. 

Last summer, DQ partners across the state raised nearly $26,450 to benefit 

Shodair Children’s Hospital. Helena’s Prospect Avenue location was proud 

to be the #1 location in the state on Miracle Treat Day 2011.

making Miracle Treat Day a sweet success for Shodair’s kids!

Fourth Montana Metabolic 

Days a Success 

Shodair's Newborn Screening Follow-Up Program 

held its fourth Montana Metabolic Days on July 13- 

14, drawing metabolic genetic patients, their families, 

and other interested parties from across the state. The 

event, held in Helena, was designed to offer patients 

with metabolic conditions and their families a way to 

meet others with similar needs, share experiences, and 

explore options with their health management. 

The event featured lectures, cooking demonstrations of 

foods appropriate for people on protein restricted 

diets, and fun activities for the children who attended. 

The hospital's Newborn Screening Follow-Up 

Program began after Montana's 2007 legislative 

session, when lawmakers expanded to 29 the 

number of conditions infants are screened for in the 

state. Most of the conditions that are screened for are 

genetic in nature. This screening is overseen by the 

Montana Department of Public Health and Human 

Services, which contracts with Shodair Children's 

Hospital for clinical follow-up services for infants 

who test positive during the screening process. 

Events like Montana Metabolic Day are a good fit with 

the program's mission. Program Coordinator Sara 

Wakefield says, “Our goal is to provide support, 

education, and assistance to families whose lives 

are affected by rare metabolic disorders; to increase 

public awareness and legislative support, and to 

provide the best possible health outcomes for all who 

are diagnosed with these life affecting conditions.”

Native 

American 

Week 

A variety of events took place at Shodair the week 

of September 24 as part of Shodair's third annual 

Native American Week observation. The goal of 

the event was to celebrate the cultural diversity of 

the hospital's patient population. Highlights 

included a tepee raising, traditional Native 

American games and stories, guest drummers 

and dancers, and special menu items for patients 

and staff. 

Approximately 5 - 12% of our psychiatric patients 

are of Native descent, and nearly the same 

percentage of our genetics patients are Native 

American as well. 

Special thanks to Louise Fisher, John St. James, 

and Vance Gehringer of Shodair for sharing their 

expertise with our patients, as well as to Helena 

resident Dan Hollow for lending us his teepee 

for the week.

Miss Montana 2012 

Alexis Wineman visited 

Shodair on October 19 to speak to the patients on 

our Glacier Residential Unit. Alexis was diagnosed 

with pervasive development disorder, including 

borderline Asperger's syndrome, when she was 11 

years old. Her platform is to educate people about 

what being on the autism spectrum is like, and to 

speak out against bullying. Her message of 

hope and perseverance in the face of personal 

challenges connected with our adolescent patients.

Alexis' mom, Kim Butterworth, also visited the 

hospital. “I wish someone had referred us to 

Shodair when we were trying to get a diagnosis 

for Alexis,” she said. “I'm glad that more people 

are talking about conditions like Asperger's than 

there were when Alexis was referred from 

provider to provider.” 

As part of the Miss America Organization's 

partnership with CMN Hospitals, Alexis also 

serves as a goodwill ambassador for Shodair.

Shodair Community Involvement 

March for Babies 

Team Shodair braved chilly spring weather on May 5 at the annual 

March of Dimes' March for Babies in Helena. Shodair was a sponsor 

of the event, which supports research and programs that help moms 

have full-term pregnancies and babies begin healthy lives. 

Susan G. Komen Race For the Cure 

Once again, Team Shodair took part in the Komen Montana Race for 

the Cure on May 19 in Helena. This year marked the Susan G. Komen 

organization's eighteenth year of fighting breast cancer in Montana. 

Monies raised through Race for the Cure help fund grants, education, 

and early detection activities throughout the state. 

NAMI Walk 

Shodair Children's Hospital was a sponsor of the NAMI Walk, 

coordinated by the Montana Chapter of the National Alliance on Mental 

Illness to raise awareness and funds for Montanans living with serious 

mental illness. NAMI Walk 2012 was held September 23 in Helena; 

Team Shodair had nearly 40 walkers and raised over $700. 

Relay for Life 

Nearly 30 hospital employees, family members, and friends joined 

together to form Shodair's first Relay For Life Team on August 3 in 

Helena. The team's campsite was decorated with paper bag luminarias 

painted by the hospital’s patients. Team Shodair raised nearly $1,000 to 

fight cancer and was a sponsor of the event. 


New Faces at Shodair 

Shodair welcomed genetic counselor 

Marissa Clark to its Genetics 

Department this summer. Marissa 

received her Master of Science 

degree in genetic counseling from 

Arcadia University in Glenside, 

Pennsylvania this year. She earned her Bachelor of 

Science degree in biology from Rocky Mountain College 

in Billings in 2009. She is a member of the National 

Society of Genetic Counselors. 

While pursuing her Master's degree, Marissa experienced 

a variety of clinical rotations in genetic counseling, 

including one in pediatric genetics at Children's Hospital 

of Philadelphia, and one in the cancer risk evaluation 

program at the University of Pennsylvania. 

Marissa sees adult and pediatric patients for a variety of 

conditions at Shodair's genetic outreach clinics in Billings, 

Miles City, and Sidney. 

Also this summer, Kelly Haugen, 

LCPC, joined Shodair's psychiatric 

clinical staff as a primary therapist for 

its adolescent patients. Kelly received 

her bachelor of science degree in 

psychology in 2007, and her master's degree 

in Health and Human Development - Mental Health 

Counseling from Montana State University in 2010. 

She obtained her LCPC licensing this fall. 

Immediately after completing her master's, Kelly worked 

as a therapist for a comprehensive school and community 

treatment program providing individual, group, and family 

therapy. She served students who ranged from kindergarteners 

through high school seniors. 

Kelly's areas of interest include working with at-risk 

youth, family dynamics, mindfulness, and Collaborative 

Problem Solving. 

This fall, Shodair welcomed new laboratory director 

Dongbin Xu, Ph.D. to its Genetics Department. Dr. Xu 

earned his doctorate in biomedical science from the 

University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center at 

Houston in 2009. Two years later, he completed a 

fellowship in cytogenetics at The Children's Hospital of 

Philadelphia. Dr. Xu is board eligible for certification 

in clinical cytogenetics.

Originally from China, Dr. Xu 

began his career as a genetic 

research assistant at Huazhong 

University of Science and 

Technology in Wuhan, China in 

1999. Over the next decade, Dr. Xu built an impressive 

career in the field of genetics, including his work as a 

graduate student at Fudan University at Shanghai, 

China, and the University of Texas M.D. Anderson 

Cancer Center. 

Dr. Xu is affiliated with a variety of organizations, 

including the American Society of Medical Genetics, the 

American Cytogenetics Conference, and the Society for 

Developmental Biology. He is the author of numerous 

articles regarding genetic research and a recipient of the 

Hearst Foundation Research and Education Award. 

Also this fall, Shodair welcomed 

school psychologist Terri 

Fernandez-Tyson, Ph.D. to its 

Psychology Department. Dr. 

Fernandez-Tyson received her 

Bachelor of Arts degree in 

Elementary Education from Arizona State University at 

Tempe. She earned her Master's of Education degree as 

well as her doctorate in Educational Psychology, also 

from ASU. 

Dr. Fernandez-Tyson's experience includes work with 

preschool, elementary, middle, and high school 

students and their families in school, correctional, and 

home-based settings in California, Arizona, and Idaho. 

Immediately prior to working at Shodair, Dr. Fernandez- 

Tyson operated a forensic psychology practice in 

southern Idaho that provided services to psychiatric 

inpatients and adult and juvenile offenders in the 

Idaho Fifth Judicial District. 

As Shodair's school psychologist, Dr. Fernandez-Tyson 

collaborates with the hospital's educators and clinicians 

to help patients meet behavioral expectations, function 

socially in school, and learn within in the school 

setting. As the hospital's patients discharge, 

Dr. Fernandez-Tyson also assists with their transition 

to their community schools. 

Dr. Fernandez-Tyson is a member of the American 

Psychological Association.

Shodair Welcomes New Board of Trustees Members 

This summer, six new members were appointed to the Shodair Children's Hospital Board of Trustees. 

All are Helena residents, and will serve three-year terms. 

Dr. William Hasquet 

A native of Shelby, optometrist Dr. Bill 

Hasquet graduated from Carroll 

College with a bachelor of arts degree 

in combined sciences in 1993. He 

received his doctorate in optometry in 1997 from 

Southern California College of Optometry and became a 

partner at Montana Eyecare in Helena in 1998. 

He currently serves as President of the Montana 

Optometric Association and is also a member of the 

American Optometric Association. 

Janet Hedges 

Ms. Hedges is a certified financial planner 

with Raymond James Financial 

Services, Inc. She has been in the 

financial services industry since 2000, 

specializing in working with businesses and individuals to 

achieve their retirement planning and investment goals. 

A graduate of Carroll College, Ms. Hedges earned her 

degree in business administration with concentrations in 

management and finance. 

Representative Galen Hollenbaugh 

Mr. Hollenbaugh has represented 

HD81 since 2006. He works for the 

Montana Department of Labor and 

Industry, where he is Operations 

Bureau Chief for the Business Standards Division. 

A graduate of the University of Montana, Mr. 

Hollenbaugh earned his bachelor of arts degree in political 

science and his master's of public administration. He 

served as Deputy Chief of Staff for Montana Secretary of 

State Linda McCulloch from 2009 to 2012. Prior to that, 

he served on the executive staffs of Attorneys General Joe 

Mazurek and Mike McGrath for a total of 12 years. 

Dr. Joel Maes 

Originally from Anaconda, Dr. Joel 

Maes attended the University of 

Montana where he studied chemistry 

and pre-medical science. He received 

his dental education at the University of Minnesota. 

Following graduation, Dr. Maes joined the U.S. Navy and 

underwent additional clinical training in San Diego, 

California. He has practiced in Helena since 1981. 

Dr. Maes is a member of the American Dental 

Association and the Montana Dental Association. 

He is a Fellow in the American College of Dentists, 

the International College of Dentists, and has achieved 

a Mastership designation in the Academy of 

General Dentistry. 

The Reverend Daniel B. Shea 

Father Dan Shea was raised in 

Anaconda. He graduated with honors 

with a degree in classical languages in 

1965 from Carroll College, where he 

began studying for the priesthood in his junior year. 

He began his career in 1969 as principal of Bozeman 

Rosary High school. In 1978, he was assigned to Carroll 

College, where he has served in a variety of roles, 

including Vice President of Student Affairs and Dean of 

Students. He is currently an Associate Professor of 

Classical Languages and also serves as pastor of Our 

Lady of the Valley Catholic Parish in Helena. 

Father Shea obtained his masters of education degree 

in counseling from Montana State University in Bozeman 

in 1976, and his doctorate degree in higher education/ 

personnel administration from Boston College in 

Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts in 1984. He earned his 

certification as a chemical dependency counselor from 

the State of Montana in 1999. 

J. Edward Surbrugg, Ph.D. 

Dr. Ed Surbrugg is a senior soil 

scientist, reclamation specialist, and 

operations manager for two Montana 

Tetra Tech offices. He has 30 years of 

professional experience managing and providing 

technical expertise for large, multidisciplinary 

environmental projects at sites throughout the western 

U.S. and Mexico for government and private clients. 

After earning his undergraduate degree in range 

ecology from Colorado State University in 1979, Dr. 

Surbrugg received his master's degree from Montana 

State University in land rehabilitation in 1982 and his 

doctorate in soil physics from North Carolina State 

University in 1992. Dr. Surbrugg is a certified 

professional soil scientist through the National American 

Registry of Certified Professionals in Agronomy, Crops, 

and Soils (ARCPACS).
