An Epoch-Making
Musical
I find it hard to believe that it’s been forty years
since I first heard Jesus Christ Superstar blasting
out of my brother’s stereo on the other side of my
bedroom wall. Until then I’d only heard our hero’s
name used during Mass, or when my father
was in a very bad temper. The title track, with
its driving gospel-rock rhythm, up-to-the-minute
lyrics and a melismatic Judas Iscariot wailing over
a back-up group that sounded like the Supremes,
struck this Catholic ten-year-old as vaguely
wicked – which only made it more exciting. And
then, elsewhere on the album, to have Mary
Magdalene not know how to love Him, and King
Herod make fun, in a wack-a-doo way, of His first
miracle (the water and the wine), and then to hear
the thirty-nine lashes – well, I was hooked.
I wasn’t alone. By the summer of 1971, it seemed
that the entire English-speaking world was
wearing out, and singing along to, a two-record
set of a ninety-minute setting of Christ’s Passion
by the astonishingly young British songwriting
team of composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and
lyricist Tim Rice. Hundreds of unauthorized
amateur and church productions sprang up
overnight, a phenomenon to match the spread of
early Christianity, or at least the global mania that
surrounded the première of Gilbert and Sullivan’s
HMS Pinafore more than ninety years before. The
much-anticipated New York opening of Jesus
Christ Superstar in October 1971 earned the
largest advance in Broadway history and made
the covers of both Time and Life magazines.
Though always envisioned for the stage –
one of Lloyd Webber’s favourite playthings as
a boy was a toy theatre – Superstar began
life as a 45-rpm single (remember those?) and
then a commissioned double album. Rice, a
record executive, had begun working with the
seventeen-year-old Lloyd Webber in 1965. After
the surprising success of their Joseph and the
Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, a short pop
cantata for school choirs (long since expanded
to a full-length show), Rice, drawn to historical
figures with short lives but lasting influence,
proposed that their next project tackle Hitler,
John F. Kennedy, Richard the Lionheart, Robin
Hood or Jesus.
A musical dramatization of the trial, suffering
and death of Jesus of Nazareth was an
idea at least as old as the thirteenth-century
Benediktbeurn Passion Play. Its, shall we say,
familiarity as a plot would enable Rice to add
psychological shadings to the characters, much
as the Greek playwrights had tweaked their
versions of the tragic deeds of the Houses
of Atreus and Thebes for their audiences.
2

Moreover, “the greatest story ever told” wouldn’t
require dialogue or traditional book scenes. It
could behave like a rock concert, with its songs
slamming, or bleeding, into one another. In short,
it could be a rock opera.
Like putting the Genesis story of Joseph’s coat
in Technicolor, Rice’s canny appropriation of
superstar, a notion popularized by Andy Warhol
and epitomized by the likes of Mick Jagger,
is very much a part of the sixties Zeitgeist.
Most interested in the theme of betrayal, Rice
downplays the apostle Peter in favour of Judas,
who, one might argue, has an even greater
dramatic arc than the Son of God.
The show opens with “Heaven on Their Minds,”
in which Judas frets that his old friend has begun
to believe his own publicity – a dangerous
moment for any fame-seeker. With more fans than
followers, Jesus also seems to Judas to have
forgotten his communitarian ideals to help the
poor (also very sixties). With time and the proper
documentation, a cult can become a religion, and
Jesus, as much man as martyr, knows that his
crucifixion will seal the deal.
As the show progresses, with Mary Magdalene
more than a passing temptation, we learn
that Rice’s Jesus is reluctant to make the
sacrifice his father demands of him. During the
Reformation, heretics were burned for less.
Equally controversial to devout listeners and the
BBC, which initially banned the album, is that
Jesus Christ Superstar doesn’t conclude with the
Resurrection. Once more, god or man? In its initial
New York run, picketers (as good for business
as a BBC ban) replaced “Superstar” on their
placards with “Lamb of God” or “Our Hope.”
More sanguine religious leaders of the
time were pleased that, in an era of rampant
“godlessness” and social upheaval, Christ’s
eternal message of love and peace was reaching
a new and younger audience. If the message
was a mix of Matthew, Mark, Luke, John and Rice,
the medium was early Andrew Lloyd Webber.
All these years later, with Evita, Cats, Starlight
Express, Sunset Boulevard and the everlasting
Phantom of the Opera behind him, it’s easy to
forget that in his salad days – the ultra-mod
sixties – Procul Harum and the Moody Blues
were as big an influence on Lloyd Webber’s
work as Puccini. For Superstar, he took the
3

notion of the post-Vatican II “guitar mass,” turned
the speakers way up, layered the sound and
hired major British musicians to play and sing
a freewheeling cornucopia of rock, jazz, soul,
gospel, funk, pop and classical sounds.
Yet, as complicated as his score can get, its
ultimate and enduring appeal is based on Lloyd
Webber’s innate understanding of how the
best theatre music often works in the simplest
fashion. A character with big needs and a
full throat expresses himself in a melody with
indelible hooks. Like any Christian service, a
moving production of Jesus Christ Superstar can
be housed in a setting as opulent as Chartres
Cathedral or as plain as a chapel in the desert.
Western theatre, after all, started as part of the
medieval Mass. Faith in the material is everything.
Forty years on, Superstar and its
methodologies, obsessions and rhythms are still
with us. Representations of Jesus continue to
court controversy – witness Serrano’s Piss Christ,
Scorsese’s The Last Temptation of Christ and
Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ. When
Green Day’s multi-platinum album American Idiot
morphed into a book-less Broadway musical
about a “Jesus of Suburbia,” its creators had
Rice and Lloyd Webber to thank. When Andrew
Jackson pulls a microphone out of his holster in
Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, he is getting
the presidential Superstar treatment. Ditto the
haplessly tawdry “celebrity” Anna Nicole Smith,
heroine of her own opera, Anna Nicole, at this
writing the hottest theatre ticket in London. The
thematic equation of “Cult + Time = Religion”
is currently being applied to Joseph Smith and
his followers in the satiric musical The Book of
Mormon, now previewing on Broadway. And
although they have yet to set Hitler or Robin
Hood to music, Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber and Sir
Timothy Rice have, after Jesus of Nazareth and
Eva Peron, joined forces once more and turned
their talents to the life and reign of another
canonical leader: The Wizard of Oz, which
opened at the London Palladium in March.
James Magruder was the dramaturge for Des
McAnuff’s Stratford production of A Funny Thing
Happened on the Way to the Forum and also
wrote about Kiss Me, Kate last season.
Des McAnuff and the
resurgence of the rock musical
by Chad Sylvain
Considering the emergence of the rock musical,
most would readily observe that 1970 was a
watershed year that saw the release of the
album-that-spawned-a-show, Jesus Christ
Superstar. Also in 1970, a young rocker with a
penchant for the theatrical made his first authorial
foray into the field.
Inspired by seeing that grandfather of rock
musicals, Hair, Des McAnuff wrote his own rock
musical, Urbania, for his Scarborough high
school, and it went on to the Poor Alex Theatre
in downtown Toronto. During the next forty years
(most spent in the director’s chair), McAnuff would
return again and again to the musical form on which
he’d cut his theatrical teeth. They grew up together.
When he was tapped to lead the La Jolla
Playhouse in 1983, he brought Big River, an
adaptation of Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn
that was fuelled by Roger Miller’s easygoing,
twangy musical sensibility, to his second season
there. When this show reached Broadway, it
announced La Jolla’s arrival as a national theatre
powerhouse for developing musicals. There,
McAnuff alternated musicals by acknowledged
masters, such as Stephen Sondheim (Merrily We
Roll Along) and Frank Loesser (How to Succeed
in Business Without Really Trying), with new
musicals by composers from outside the usual
Broadway vernacular. That included country
music (Big River), jazz (Cannonball and Nat
Adderley’s Shout Up a Morning) and, of course,
rock: Ray Davies’s 80 Days and, in 1992, The
Who’s Tommy. McAnuff also mentored a series
of directors who assisted him on those musicals,
including Michael Greif (who would go on to
direct Rent and Next to Normal) and Alex Timbers
(Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson).
Prior to Tommy’s arrival on Broadway, the fire
of rock music had nearly extinguished on the
New York stage, with only Little Shop of Horrors
and Chess to be found as exemplars in the
decade preceding it. But after McAnuff and Pete
Townshend plugged in, and pulled the stage, the
guitar and the amp back together, a doorway was
opened that Rent, Hedwig and the Angry Inch,
Spring Awakening, American Idiot and others
rushed through – shows that prove the rock
musical’s maturity.
McAnuff’s personal Act II with the La Jolla
Playhouse, from 2001 to 2006, after a seven-year
hiatus, follows the observed pattern: this era was
bookended by Dracula: The Musical and Michael
Ondaatje’s The Collected Works of Billy the Kid
(with rock music by McAnuff), and Zhivago and
Jersey Boys at the other end. With the latter, the
co-evolutionary paths of the kid rocker and the
rock musical intersect at transcendence.
Rock music is based, as it has been from the
start, on a three- to five-minute dramaturgy.
Musical theatre is based on a 90- to 105-minute
dramaturgy, with one intermission. Mastery of
both is not common. Using the first to create
the second is an alchemy that McAnuff has
consistently mastered. Listen to his work – and
this is true for his Shakespeares and Chekhovs
as much as his Superstars – and you will hear
the steady, pulse-quickening beat that is his
métier. It changes to match the character and the
composition of the piece, to be sure. But there is
a beat nevertheless, always there, always going
on in just about everything he puts on stage.
Chad Sylvain is the dramaturge for this
production of Jesus Christ Superstar.
The Story
Jesus Christ has developed a fervent religious following in Nazareth, causing his apostle Judas Iscariot
to fear a violent crackdown by the oppressive Roman regime. When the high priests Caiaphas and
Annas decide that something must be done about this man whom the people now call their king, Judas
is faced with a terrible choice.
Stratford Shakespeare Festival.
The Eternal Triangle
It was seeing a television interview with Tim Rice,
years ago, that led me to the doorstep of this
production.
I’d gotten to know Tim in the early 1990s, when
I was working on The Who’s Tommy. He was very
supportive of that production: he came to an early
preview, took us out afterwards for a meal of
Falstaffian proportions and told us that we were in
great shape. He was truly a mensch, and I became
very fond of him. So I’ve always followed his press
coverage with great interest.
One evening, when I happened to be channel
surfing, I came upon an interview with him in which
he talked at one point about Jesus Christ Superstar.
He spoke first of all about the secular approach
he’d taken to the story – leaving the big issues out
of it and focusing on the history and on Christ the
man, as opposed to Christ the Son of God – which
I thought was a terrific idea in itself. Then he got on
to the relationship between Jesus, Mary Magdalene
and Judas, which he described as a love triangle.
And I suddenly realized: yes of course. That’s
exactly how that show is written. It doesn’t tackle
the question of whether or not Jesus is the Son of
God and certainly allows for the faith of Christian
believers. But essentially it portrays Jesus simply as
a truly remarkable man.
Before I started working on Superstar, I wasn’t
familiar with its previous stage incarnations; I knew
the show only from the album. The great discovery
for me in working on this production has been
that Tim Rice is a very good playwright as well as
a great lyricist, and that in Jesus Christ Superstar
he and Andrew Lloyd Webber created not only
a ground-breaking rock musical but also an
outstanding work of drama.
From General Director Antoni Cimolino and Artistic Director Des McAnuff
Thirty-two members of the Stratford Shakespeare Festival’s 2011 company have come out of our
professional training program, now known as the Birmingham Conservatory for Classical Theatre.
Founded in 1998, the Conservatory has helped to launch the careers of some of our leading young
actors, many of whom we have had the great pleasure of directing. Providing opportunities for young
Canadian artists is part of our mission at the Festival, and we hope you will find it as satisfying as we
do to watch their growth as they share the stage with some of the finest actors in the world.
Under the leadership of Martha Henry, the Conservatory is made possible by the support of the Birmingham
family, the Stratford Shakespeare Festival Endowment Foundation and the Department of Canadian Heritage.
We thank them for helping us to nurture and support these talented artists in our 2011 company:
Tim Rice
Lyricist
Born in 1944, Tim Rice
began songwriting in
1965. That same year
he met fellow budding
songwriter Andrew
Lloyd Webber, whose
musical ambitions
were in theatre rather
than rock or pop. They
teamed up and wrote
four musicals together from 1965 to 1978. The first,
The Likes of Us (1965-66), was performed for the
first time in 2005. The other three, Joseph and
the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (1968), Jesus
Christ Superstar (1969-71) and Evita (1976-78) were
more immediate successes.
After the pair went their separate ways in the
early 1980s, Rice wrote Blondel (1983) with Stephen
Oliver. It ran for a year in London and was followed
in 1986 by Chess, in collaboration with ABBA’s
Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson. Chess had
a healthy run in the West End but flopped on
Broadway in 1988. Many other productions of it
have been mounted worldwide in the years since.
In the 1990s Rice worked primarily for the Disney
company, writing lyrics for the movies Aladdin and
The Lion King and for the stage shows Beauty
and the Beast, King David, The Lion King and
Elton John’s Aida. Between Disney commitments
he wrote the words for Cliff Richard’s theatrical
blockbuster Heathcliff, which toured the U.K. in
1995-96. For Dreamworks, he joined forces again
with Elton John to write the score for the 2000
animated film The Road to El Dorado.
His awards include a star on Hollywood’s Walk of
Fame, three Oscars, four Tonys, five Grammys and
thirteen Ivor Novello Awards. The first volume of
his autobiography, Oh What a Circus, was
published in 1999.
Andrew
Lloyd
Webber
Composer
Andrew Lloyd Webber
is the composer
of The Likes of Us,
Joseph and the
Amazing Technicolor
Dreamcoat, Jesus
Christ Superstar,
By Jeeves, Evita, Song & Dance, Cats, Starlight
Express, The Phantom of the Opera, Aspects of
Love, Sunset Boulevard, Whistle Down the Wind,
The Beautiful Game, The Woman in White and,
most recently, Love Never Dies, which continues
the story of the Phantom and Christine. He also
composed the film scores of Gumshoe and The
Odessa File, and the classical work Requiem.
Besides many of his own shows, his credits
as producer include Daisy Pulls It Off, Lend Me
a Tenor, Shirley Valentine, La Bête, the groundbreaking
Bollywood musical Bombay Dreams, The
Sound of Music, The Wizard of Oz and the film of
The Phantom of the Opera.
He pioneered television casting for musical
theatre with the Emmy award-winning BBC series
How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria? He
repeated his success with Any Dream Will Do,
which cast the title role of Joseph and the Amazing
Technicolor Dreamcoat, and I’d Do Anything, which
cast the roles of Nancy and Oliver for Oliver! In
the 2010 BBC series Over the Rainbow, Danielle
Hope was cast in the role of Dorothy for his new
production of The Wizard of Oz.
His awards include seven Tonys, three
Grammys (including Best Contemporary Classical
Composition for Requiem), seven Oliviers, a Golden
Globe, an Oscar, two International Emmys, the
Praemium Imperiale, the Richard Rodgers Award
for Excellence in Musical Theatre and The Kennedy
Center Honor.
He was knighted in 1992 and created an honorary
life peer in 1997.
