Remnants of Community by Simon Wroot Available May 2010 to October 2010 There is a simple and powerful presence in hundreds of scattered places in Alberta. These are the sites where the settlers, Métis, some First Nations people and missionaries all channelled their faith, their devotion, and their need for a spiritual home into the energy to build themselves a church. In Remnants of Community the artist records this human presence by creating miniature landscapes out of four different metals. These pieces are then pinned together in layers to create a low-relief view of the buildings and their surroundings. The work is then mounted on a piece of slate. Each of the fifteen pieces in the exhibition is accompanied by its story: who created it, where and when, what denomination, and where and what is it now.
