CANSKATE PHILOSOPHY:
CanSkate’s mission is to provide a program which helps individuals learn how to skate. In many areas, Skate
Canada clubs are not the only programming option that parents can choose to register their children in;
however, we want CanSkate to be the BEST option. By providing a program that is top notch in every way,
we reinforce the values of our organization and uphold our vision and commitment to excellence.
THE IMPORTANCE OF CANSKATE AT YOUR CLUB:
CanSkate may be the most important program your club offers. It is the very foundation from which you
build your membership of future recreational and competitive skaters, volunteers, judges and coaches.
Your CanSkate program will have a dramatic effect on the percentage of skaters interested in continuing
to skate through STARSkate, CanPowerSkate, SynchroSkate and CompetitiveSkate. CanSkate is the major
feeder into your other programs.
CanSkate also provides your first impression to the community. When a family walks into the rink for the
first time to sign up for your program they will be thinking:
• Do we like this club?
• Do we like the coaches and program assistants?
• Do we like the program?
• Should we sign up again?
CanSkate is also very important to your coaches. This is the program where all future students will start.
A successful CanSkate program means there will be more movement into STARSkate and therefore more
opportunity to develop skaters. It is also the best place to start identifying talent.
2
ORGANIZATION:
First impressions are always more positive when a new environment is organized and friendly. Here are
some tips to help make your session efficient and effective:
• Have skaters pre-grouped for the first day; any rearranging can be done on the ice or after the
session.
• Use laminated name tags that clip on; they make for easy group transfers, are visible, durable and
sticker-friendly.
• Use a group bag or board to direct skaters where to go on the ice for their lesson. To ease name
tag headaches, have skaters wear them throughout the session. Collect the tags at the end of the
lesson. This way the club always has access to the skaters’ name tags.
• Ensure session music is readily available and has pre-recorded signals to indicate a change in the
session, i.e. switch group.
• Ensure that all teaching aids, props, badges and awards are easily accessible on the ice for lessons
and are well stocked.
• Use a session layout that best suits your CanSkate needs (see Session Layout for more details).
3
MUSIC
Music is a motivator! It can add smiles, laughter and energy to a session. It turns frowns upside down,
sends sorrow away and sets the mood for a great learning environment. In addition to these great reasons,
the use of music during a CanSkate session can also:
• Help skaters develop rhythm and coordination
• Keep the session organized
Rhythm & Coordination
Some skaters have natural rhythm and timing, while others need to develop it. Clapping, stepping, skating,
jumping, stopping and dancing to music generally help skaters develop important skills in other critical and
fundamental aspects of our sport such as:
• Hitting accents in music for choreography
• Recognizing the beats and staying on time for dances or skills
• Encouraging freedom of movement and expression
Organization
Your CanSkate session will run itself once it is set to music. Lessons will be pre-timed ensuring equal
attention to all groups. Warm-up, group activity and cool down will all be pre-determined and recorded in
the appropriate order and placement to allow the session to flow effortlessly. Use an auditory signal to let
all participants and parents know that the session is changing.
Sample 45 minute session:
Part 1 – Warm-Up: 2-5 upbeat action-type songs = 10 minutes
Auditory signal or sound effect
Part 2 – Lesson Time: 15 minutes of music followed by the auditory signal then another 15
minutes of music to allow for two lessons of 15 minutes each = 30 minutes
Auditory signal or sound effect
Part 3 – Group Activity: 1-2 upbeat action songs = 3 minutes
Part 4 – Cool Down: 1 slower song = 2 minutes
4
TEACHING AIDS AND PROPS
The difference between teaching a lesson with teaching aids and teaching a lesson without them is much
like the difference between a young child reading a book with pictures and one without them.
Adding visual aids to your lessons will stimulate the skaters’ learning ability. Colourful teaching aids will
also add fun and variety to your lessons. Here are some ideas on how to add visual aids to increase fun and
learning:
Please refer to Appendix A “Leona’s List of Teaching Aids” for more tips and ideas.
5
REWARDS & INCENTIVES
Skating can be a challenging sport to navigate. Balancing on a quarter inch of steel in one of the most
frictionless environments on earth can be a little daunting. Providing rewards and incentives for skaters (at
any age) encourages persistence and recognizes achievements.
CanSkate offers 16 badges to reward skaters for their progress:
Stages 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7
Fundamental Movement in Go Forward, Go Backward, Stop, Spin, Turn, Jump, Fitness 1 & 2 and the
Kidskater Badge
Clubs/coaches may reward their skaters in many other ways as well. Stickers, colouring sheets, ribbons,
buttons and participation certificates are all great for skaters.
Our vision is for skaters to receive positive reinforcement every session!
6
MOVEMENT
Children learn by doing. Providing a program that operates using 90% continuous movement automatically
encourages development. Setting up your CanSkate session to encourage movement is a process that
requires yearly review to ensure maximum efficiency and effectiveness. Test your movement percentage -
time the movement of your groups on the ice. To achieve 90% movement, skaters must be moving for 54
minutes during a 60 minute session.
To maximize your movement on the ice, ensure your program has:
• The most effective session format
• Use of circuits during lessons and practice time
• Use of stations as a means to rotate around the ice
• A warm-up and cool down that uses the entire ice surface
• A fast track set up around the perimeter of the ice
SESSION FORMATS
Inside track
could be used
for new Skaters
Fast Track
Regardless of the length of your program, it is essential to have a choreographed warm-up and cool down
at the beginning and end of your session. By using the entire ice surface, the club ensures that the skaters
are given the opportunity to explore their speed, length of stride, gliding ability, agility, etc. Most clubs
offer this at the beginning of the session; however, it is also beneficial to offer this at the end of a session
as skaters tend to be at ease and more relaxed. The end of the session is where you will see the most
progress, exploration of movement, balance and agility.
The best layout for your lesson has many factors. The number of skaters, number of groups, length of
session and number of coaches including program assistants will all have an effect on the layout that is
most effective for your club.
Here are some considerations to keep in mind when planning your lesson layout:
• Ensure that the skaters are rotating to different stations on the ice
• Ensure that every group spends at least 10 minutes with the coach
• Evaluate use of ice to maximize skating development (lay out an ice usage plan that allows the
skaters to use as much ice as possible during their lesson and practice time)
7

4-minute cool down
OFF-ICE TIME:
Warm-up can be done off the ice as well! A great way to introduce skaters to our sport is by doing
off-ice exercises such as warming up, balancing and jumping. This is a good way to begin early talent
identification.
STATIONS
Stations are used to help direct the focus of the skater. They also encourage movement, add variety, fun,
and can be used to highlight or focus on areas in need of development. By rotating groups around the ice
to different stations, many advantages are evident:
1. Keeps skaters moving
2. A change of scenery helps keep interest
3. Allows coaches and Program Assistants to focus on different things at each station
4. Adds variety to the session
Here are some examples of different layouts for stations.
CIRCUITS
Circuits are the best way to keep skaters moving on the ice. They are fun, challenging, add variety and
most of all effective! Having skaters practice their skills in a circuit gives them the repetition needed for
advancement in our sport.
At this level, skaters learn by watching and doing. Circuits allow the skaters to practice over and over again
thus accelerating the learning process.
Here are some examples:
Jump over
broken road
STOP
Drive over animals (Sculling)
2 foot to 1 foot - Narrow road
Whoa
Curvy!!!
Under bridge
Keep circuits fun and challenging. For more ideas check out appendices C and D: “Theme Circuits &
Games” and “Skill Circuits”.
10
Tips for Circuits
1. When drawing on the ice, try to make the tracing size-appropriate for the skater.
2. Don’t worry if your pictures are not perfect. Skaters are forgiving and are more interested in the activity
than the pictures that represent the action.
3. If drawing on the ice is an issue, create laminated signs with symbols to represent an action or skill. Cut
a slit on top of a pylon, insert the sign for visibility and place on the circuits.
4. Be creative with your ice patterns. No need to follow existing lines on ice: swoop, curve,
loop-de-loop, etc – go wild!
5. Always draw arrows to indicate direction.
Here are some simple symbols as examples:
2 feet 1 foot Spin Tornado
(spin)
log
(jump over)
River
(jump over)
Lily pad
Note: Once the skaters learn which symbol
stands for which skill, circuits become very easy.
QUALITY LESSONS
Our primary goal for CanSkate is to teach quality skating. Here are some tips to keep in mind when teaching
your lessons:
1. When working in a circuit, choose one skill to concentrate on. By staying in one place on the circuit, it
encourages skaters to continue to move and allows you to work with skaters individually as they pass
you.
2. Make sure you have allowed for multiple repetition of skills on your circuit in both directions.
3. When teaching a new skill, the first half of the circuit should be progressions leading up to your new
skill. The second half of the circuit should be repetition of the learned skill.
4. By adding props and teaching aids, you create a more visual experience for the skaters. This will help
motivate skaters and add variety to previously learned skills.
5. Be sure to use a lot of demonstration either by yourself or your PAs, so skaters can see what they are
working towards.
6. Helping skaters ‘feel’ the skill greatly improves their acquisition rate. Creating muscle memory allows
the skater to better understand expectations. Lots of assistance and hands-on techniques allow for this
to happen.
7. Your voice can be a great motivator. Be sure to use lots of praise when making contact with each skater.
A simple, “Wow, good job!” can do wonders.
8. Be strong in your foundations. Teaching proper technique early lays the ground work for easy transition
into any ice sport.
9. Try to create 10 different ways to teach the same element. Your creativity will result in more effort from
the skaters, more interest and faster learning.
10. Have fun! The more fun you have, the more fun your skaters will have. It’s contagious.
12
PROGRAM ASSISTANTS (PA)
In many clubs, CanSkate relies on the dedication from skaters volunteering their time as PAs. To encourage
the best PAs possible, consider the following:
• Offer a minimum of one training session per year to your PAs. Touch base with them throughout the
year to provide feedback, offer suggestions, praise/recognize their efforts and hear their thoughts
on the program.
• Ensure your PAs are recognizable on the ice. This helps with organization and professionalism of the
program.
• Be sure to thank your PAs!
13
PRESCHOOL CANSKATE
A preschool CanSkate session (whether it is run on its own ice or in conjunction
with a regular CanSkate session), will have some special considerations appropriate
to this age range.
• Shorter sessions will appeal to their attention span
• Recommended length: 30 minutes
• Higher ratio of coach/PA to skater
• Lots of props and teaching aids for a very visually stimulating environment
• Fun music and actions
• Lots of awards/rewards for small achievements (ribbons, stickers, colouring sheets, etc.)
• Very animated
• Lots of assistance, praise and encouragement
• Colourful circuits (markers, toys, props, etc.)
• Some fun time where skaters can participate in a coach directed activity and
explore their movement without instruction (i.e. rolling hula hoops, catching bubbles, throwing
beanie babies into a bucket, etc.)
14
THEME DAYS/FUN DAYS
Adding a fun day once a month is a great way to keep the variety, fun and challenge in the CanSkate
program. Here are some ideas:
Easy:
Pajama Day - Encourage skaters to come to skating in their PJ’s (including coaches). Bring your favourite
teddy bear too, and use the stuffed animals in your circuit. The skaters will love skating with their “buddy”.
A Little more Prep:
Winter Sports Day - Have skaters represent their favourite country. Set up stations to represent different
sports and teach lessons accordingly (i.e. speed skating, skiing, luge, etc.). At the end of the session, award
each skater with a medal (chocolate loonies taped onto curling ribbon, prepared ahead of time).
Get your community off to the right start on the ice. An enjoyable experience at your club will encourage
your community members to stay involved in ice sports, perhaps for a lifetime.
Be sure to promote all of your other programs to the CanSkate membership in your club.
Have fun and keep skating!
Appendix A
Leona’s List of Teaching Aids
by Leona Boyle
16
Leona’s List of Teaching Aids
• Classifying items - zoo and farm animals - skaters pick up animals and put zoo animals in one place and
farm animals in another place.
• Learning shapes - large and small square, circle and rectangle, triangle shapes cut out on different
colours of poster paper and laminated. Doing only one shape per day, have the large shape on the
boards. The coach or PA has the small shape in hands. Discuss the shape (colour, sides, corners, etc.)
Have skaters find the large shape on the board and skate over to it to see if it is the same. Then skaters
skate all over the ice, finding that coloured shape drawn on the ice with a felt marker. Skaters will
perform a certain skill when they find the shape and continue to find another on.
• Matching colours
- Rice filled film canisters with colour circle taped on and construction paper laminated circles -
skaters pick up film canister and skate over to the matching construction paper circles
- Troll dolls with different colours of hair and felt markers. Skaters pick up trolls and skate to set trolls
in the matching colour of circle that the coach has drawn on the ice.
- Jungle Rhumba - Coach or PA has many clothespins attached to their clothing. The clothes pins have
a coloured ribbon hanging from the end. Skaters skate around, trying to pull a ribbon off the coach or
PA. The skater then skates over to place it in a matching coloured circle drawn on the ice. This game
could also be played with the same colour of ribbon on each clothes pin. Skaters try to see who can
get the most ribbons.
• Plastic-type dolls to show correct posture and spiral positions
• Cookie Monster - either stuffed or big picture on boards - cookies made out of ice cream pail lids,
margarine or yogurt lids covered with brown construction paper and brown dots. Skaters pick up
cookies off the ice and give cookies to Cookie Monster. Cookie Monster could be made with a hole
through the mouth so that the skaters actually feed Cookie Monster.
• Puppets - different animals. This adds variety to lessons. Skaters listen to puppet talk instead of PA
or coach. Skaters could make the sound of the animal puppet. Puppet of a boy and a girl. Skaters are
told they are the Canadian skating champions. Coach or PA asks who the champions are. If they do not
know, they are told who they are and then skaters pretend they are those champions.
• Steering wheels made out of ice cream pail lids with the centre cut out. These can be put on the tops
of helmets for posture. Skaters could put one around each wrist. Skater must skate with arms out. They
could also be used for creative expression in driving a car.
• Bean bags for posture. Bean bags can also be thrown by skaters, they skate over to them, pick them up
and continue.
- Alphabet bean bags - 26 bean bags with the letters of the alphabet on them. Accordion booklet
that will stand on the ice with pictures of items that start with those letters. Skaters pick up bean
bags and skate over to the pictures and set in front of the correct picture.
- Number bean bags - same activity as above.
17
• Pom-poms or rhythmic gymnastic ribbons - skaters skate and shake pom-poms or ribbons. This helps
with coordination and rhythm.
• Parachute - skaters can play different games or practise circle thrusts, crosscuts and gliding on one or
two feet while holding on to the parachute.
• Stop and go gloves - coach or PA has one red and one green glove on. Skaters go and stop according to
what coloured hand is up.
• Large piece puzzles - skaters pick up pieces of the puzzle and skate over to a specified area to complete
the puzzle.
- Snowman puzzle - Large cut out laminated snowman pieces. Skaters skate over to the boards
and pick off a piece of the snowman puzzle. They skate over to another area to put the snowman
together.
• Pool noodles - these can be used to help younger skaters start to glide on two feet. Skater holds on to
the pool noodle at one end with the other end straight in front of them. Coach or PA holds on to the
other end and gives a little pull so skater starts to glide. Coach or PA then lets go so that skater is gliding
on own. Pool noodles can be used for skaters learning crosscuts. The pool noodle must always be in the
centre of the circle. This helps with arm positions for the crosscuts. Scarves or elastic bands could also
be used for this.
• Large blocks - skaters pick up blocks and skate over to a specified area to build a castle
• Pinwheels - the faster the skater skates the more the pinwheel will turn
• Plastic hockey sticks and pucks - these add variety to a lesson. Skaters can go through a slalom course,
maneuvering their puck around the pylons. The hockey sticks could also be turned into horses in which
skaters can ride.
• Bowling pins - skaters each have one bowling pin that is set on the ice about 8 to 10 feet in front of
them. Skater skates up to the pin and then picks up one foot and kicks it. This helps skaters start to
glide on one foot without realizing they are doing it. Skaters can also play a quick game of bowling.
• Musical instruments - skaters march around playing a musical instrument or shaking a noisemaker.
• Creative expression teaching aids
- Story picture books - skaters act out story
- Magic wands - change skaters into many different things
(This has more effect if coach or PA is dressed like a magician or wizard)
- Nursery rhyme pictures - skaters act out nursery rhymes
- Different hats - coach or PA puts on a hat and skaters act out the person who would wear that type
of hat
- Stuffed animals - skaters act like the animals
18
• Holiday teaching aids
- Halloween - many laminated cut out paper pumpkins placed on boards, different cut out faces
placed on boards on a different side of the arena. Skaters skate over to the faces, pull them off and
turn the pumpkins into a jack-o-lantern.
- Holiday season - Several large cut out laminated poster paper trees and many cut out paper
ornaments. Skaters pull ornaments off the boards and decorate the trees which are on the other
side of the rink.
- New Year’s - noisemakers - skaters skate around the ice, doing different skills and making as much
noise as they can.
- Valentine’s Day - Valentine cards and a box that is decorated with a slot on the top. Skaters skate
over to a specified place, pick up a valentine, then continue skating, doing a certain skill to deliver
the valentine to the decorated box.
- St. Patrick’s Day - a picture of a leprechaun, a pot and chocolate gold coins - skaters skate around
the ice looking for a leprechaun and his pot of gold. While skaters are skating around, coach or PA is
calling out different skills to do while looking. The pot and the coins are already hidden somewhere.
A parent in the stands puts up the leprechaun on the Plexiglas in front of the pot. Skaters skate over
to it and coins are handed out.
Things to Remember
1. Use the blue Fun-Tac ® . This brand works the best. This will hold most things onto the boards and
Plexiglas unless it is very damp – or attach items with pant hangers. Laminating papers makes them last
longer.
2. When skaters are skating and picking things up, always think of safety first. Skaters should not lie down
on the ice. Skaters need to slow down before they reach the object, bend down slowly and pick it up.
Skaters should always be doing some specified skill when skating to objects or putting objects in a
certain place.
3. Be creative! There is lots you can do with almost anything. The possibilities are endless!
4. If you are lacking ideas, visit your local elementary school and speak to a primary level teacher.
5. To obtain teaching aids on a low budget:
- Go to garage sales
- Ask parents in a newsletter if they could donate something to the club that they are not using
anymore
- Make teaching aids at a PA training session
6. Have fun!!!
free”, the skater in the middle skates out of the circle under someone’s arms. Make sure all skaters get a
turn to be the fish.
