FIRST GENERATION<br />

1. <strong>James</strong> <strong>Halpin</strong> (1810 – 1862)<br />

<strong>James</strong> <strong>Halpin</strong> was born in Ireland in 1810. The names <strong>of</strong> his mother and father are<br />

not known. He emigrated from Ireland to the U.S. in 1839, arriving in New York on<br />

June 3, 1839 aboard the ship “Hark Away”. He settled in Jefferson County, <strong>Virginia</strong>,<br />

in the vicinity <strong>of</strong> Harper’s Ferry, and worked as a laborer for the B&O railroad, which<br />

was building westward through the mountains toward the Ohio River. He married his<br />

first wife Ann in 1840. Ann was born in Maryland in 1820. Her maiden name is<br />

unknown but may have been either Harper or Houser. Ann died in late 1850 and<br />

<strong>James</strong> was remarried to his second wife, Elizabeth Cantwell in 1851. Elizabeth was<br />

born in Maryland in 1814. <strong>James</strong> served the confederacy during the Civil War. He<br />

enlisted at Charlestown as a Private in Company Glenn’s <strong>of</strong> the 7th <strong>Virginia</strong> Cavalry<br />

regiment on August 31, 1861. He later was transferred into Company A <strong>of</strong> the 12 th<br />

<strong>Virginia</strong> Cavalry on June 15, 1862. Shortly thereafter he was injured and was<br />

returned to his home in Jefferson County. <strong>James</strong> died as a result <strong>of</strong> his injuries on<br />

September 12, 1862.<br />

<strong>James</strong> and his first wife Ann had the following children:<br />

SECOND GENERATION<br />

2. <strong>James</strong> <strong>Halpin</strong> (<strong>James</strong> 1 ) was born in 1841 in Jefferson County, <strong>Virginia</strong>. It appears<br />

that he died somewhere between 1851 and 1860 since his name is recorded in the<br />

1850 U.S. census but does not appear in the 1860 census.<br />

3. Mary A. <strong>Halpin</strong> (<strong>James</strong> 1 ) was born in Jefferson County, <strong>Virginia</strong> in 1843. She<br />

married William Clarence Ault in Frederick, Maryland on December 26, 1864.<br />

William Ault, son <strong>of</strong> Michael Ault and Charlotte Stover Ault, was born in Maryland<br />

on April 7, 1843. He worked as a clerk for the railroad. Following their marriage<br />

Mary and William initially lived in Bolivar, Jefferson County, <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> but later<br />

moved to Grafton, <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong>. Around 1881 they moved to Wood County, WV<br />

where they lived for the rest <strong>of</strong> their lives. Mary <strong>Halpin</strong> Ault died on March 13, 1895<br />

in Parkersburg. William Ault died March 26, 1926. They are both buried in<br />

Parkersburg.<br />

Mary <strong>Halpin</strong> and William Ault had the following ten children:<br />

4. Robert J. <strong>Halpin</strong> (<strong>James</strong> 1 ) was born in February 1847 in Jefferson County,<br />

<strong>Virginia</strong>. He served as a Private in Company D <strong>of</strong> the 12 th <strong>Virginia</strong> Cavalry<br />

Regiment during the Civil War. Following the war he began working for the railroad<br />

and continued to do so throughout his life. He married Mary Anne Higgins in 1864<br />

in Jefferson County, <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong>. She was a daughter <strong>of</strong> Edward Higgins and<br />

Catherine Kerian Higgins. Mary Anne was born in Ireland in June 1849 and came to<br />

the U.S. with her family in 1855. As the railroad progressed westward so did Robert<br />

and his family. They lived in Vinton County, Ohio from 1870 to 1880 (based on U.S.<br />

census – exact dates not known). Robert’s stepmother Elizabeth and stepsister Ellen<br />

also moved to Vinton County. Shortly after 1880, Robert moved to Moundsville,<br />

<strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong>, continuing to work for the railroad. He became a foreman for the<br />

railroad and continued to work in Moundsville until he retired. Robert’s wife Mary<br />

Anne died from paralysis on December 16, 1913 and is buried in St. Martin’s<br />

Catholic Cemetery in Cameron, <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong>. Following the death <strong>of</strong> his wife,<br />

Robert moved to Shreveport, Louisiana where he lived with his daughter Cecelia and<br />

her husband, William Bronsell. Robert died on November 15, 1921 in Shreveport.<br />

His body was returned to <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> and is buried next to his wife in St. Martin’s<br />

Catholic Cemetery, Cameron,WV.<br />

Robert J. <strong>Halpin</strong> and Mary Anne Higgins <strong>Halpin</strong> had the following ten children:<br />

5. John <strong>Halpin</strong> (<strong>James</strong> 1 ) was born in Jefferson County, <strong>Virginia</strong> in 1847. Like his<br />

brother Robert, he went to work for the railroad and followed his family to Ohio<br />

where he met and married his wife, Frances. Frances was born in Canada in 1853.<br />

John and Frances were married in 1872. In 1880 they lived in Marion County, Ohio<br />

and later moved to Toledo, Ohio. John <strong>Halpin</strong> died October 15, 1911 in Toledo.<br />

John and Frances had three daughters:<br />

6. Patrick <strong>Halpin</strong> (<strong>James</strong> 1 ) was born in August, 1849 in Jefferson County, <strong>Virginia</strong>.<br />

After his father’s death in 1862 he followed his family westward but did not settle in<br />

Ohio. Instead he moved on to Missouri where he met his wife Mary. Mary was born<br />

in Missouri in January 1851. Patrick and Mary were married in 1877. He spent his<br />

working life as a farmer in Ste. Genevieve County, Missouri where he died in ????.<br />

Patrick and Mary had a total <strong>of</strong> nine children:<br />

7. Jane (Jennie) <strong>Halpin</strong> (<strong>James</strong> 1 ) was born in 1856 in Jefferson County, <strong>Virginia</strong>.<br />

She moved with her mother Elizabeth to Vinton County, Ohio around 1870. Jane<br />

married Charles Kavanaugh in 1877. They continued to live in Vinton County.<br />

Jane and Charles had two daughters:<br />

8. Ellen <strong>Halpin</strong> (<strong>James</strong> 1 ) was born in Jefferson County, <strong>Virginia</strong> in 1858. Like her<br />

sister Jane, she moved to Vinton County, Ohio. She married John Casey in 1853.<br />

John Casey was born in Canada in May, 1858. John Casey worked as a locomotive<br />

engineer for the railroad. From 1900 through at least 1930 they lived in Columbus,<br />

Ohio. Ellen <strong>Halpin</strong> Casey died sometime after 1930.<br />

Ellen and John had five children:<br />

THIRD GENERATION<br />

9. John Ralph Ault (Mary Ault 2 , <strong>James</strong> 1 ) was born in Samples Manor, Maryland on<br />

April 21, 1866. He married Mary Ellen McNulty in St. Xavier’s Church, Wood<br />

County, <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> on August 15, 1888. Mary Ellen was born in <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong><br />

on December 24, 1862. John and Mary Ellen lived their entire married lives together<br />

in Parkersburg, <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> where he was employed as a clerk/bookkeeper for<br />

Standard Oil. John Ault died in St. Joseph’s Hospital, Parkersburg from uremia on<br />

January 23, 1944. He is buried in Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Parkersburg.<br />

John and Mary Ellen had two children:<br />

10. <strong>James</strong> M. Ault (Mary Ault 2 , <strong>James</strong> 1 ) was born in <strong>Virginia</strong> in 1868. He and his<br />

wife Irene were married in 1897. In 1900 they lived in Wilmerding, Allegheny<br />

County, Pennsylvania. No more records have yet been found.<br />

11. Lottie W. Ault (Mary Ault 2 , <strong>James</strong> 1 ) was born in Bolivar, Jefferson County, <strong>West</strong><br />

<strong>Virginia</strong> in 1870. No records beyond 1880 have yet been found.<br />

12. Sarah V. Ault (Mary Ault 2 , <strong>James</strong> 1 ) was born in Bolivar, Jefferson County, <strong>West</strong><br />

<strong>Virginia</strong> in 1872. No records <strong>of</strong> her have yet been found beyond 1880.<br />

13. Annie M. Ault (Mary Ault 2 , <strong>James</strong> 1 ) was born in Bolivar, Jefferson County, <strong>West</strong><br />

<strong>Virginia</strong> on November 13, 1873. Sometime between 1900 and 1910 she moved to<br />

Johnson County, Texas where she was employed in a railroad <strong>of</strong>fice. She married her<br />

husband Henry E. Culter in Texas in 1913. Henry, son <strong>of</strong> John W, Culter and<br />

Elizabeth Hawkins Culter was born in Illinois in November, 1867. Henry was<br />

employed as the stationmaster at the Union Depot, Santa Fe Railroad, in Galveston,<br />

Texas. Annie Ault Culter died in Tarrant County, Texas on April 3, 1943.<br />

Annie and Henry had one daughter:<br />

14. Gertrude M. Ault (Mary Ault 2 , <strong>James</strong> 1 ) was born in Grafton, Taylor County,<br />

<strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> on July 19, 1876. She died on March 9, 1899 from consumption<br />

stemming from typhoid fever. She was not married.<br />

15. Joseph Edward Ault (Mary Ault 2 , <strong>James</strong> 1 ) was born in Grafton, <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> on<br />

March 26, 1880. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on December 30, 1901. Joseph<br />

married Laura Gray, daughter <strong>of</strong> Isaac and Luly Miller Gray on October 29, 1917 in<br />

Wheeling, WV. Laura was born January 4, 1893 in Wheeling. Joseph and Laura<br />

resided in Preston County, <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> where he worked as a carpenter for the coal<br />

mines.<br />

Joseph and Laura Ault had six children:<br />

16. Charles William Ault (Mary Ault 2 , <strong>James</strong> 1 ) was born in Parkersburg, WV on<br />

October 19, 1882. He resided in Parkersburg for most <strong>of</strong> his adult life. Charles was<br />

employed as a clerk for Standard Oil. He married Nettie Blossom Blovin in<br />

Parkersburg on February 29, 1908. Nettie was born in Chautauqua County, New<br />

York in 1887. Charles and his family resided at 1027 Laird Ave. in Parkersburg.<br />

Sometime between 1942 and 1945 Charles and his family moved to Dade County,<br />

Florida.<br />

Charles and Nettie had three children:<br />

17. Allie C. Ault (Mary Ault 2 , <strong>James</strong> 1 ) was born in November, 1885, probably in<br />

Grafton, WV. In 1900 she was living with her family in Grafton. No other records<br />

for her have yet been found.<br />

21. Catherine <strong>Halpin</strong> (Robert 2 , <strong>James</strong> 1 ) was born in Vinton County, Ohio in October,<br />

1869. She lived with her family in Vinton County until they moved to Moundsville,<br />

WV shortly after 1880. In 1900 she was still living at home in Moundsville with her<br />

patents and siblings. At that time she was working as a teacher. No later records for<br />

her have yet been found.<br />

22. Mary A. <strong>Halpin</strong> (Robert 2 , <strong>James</strong> 1 ) was born in Vinton County, Ohio in June,<br />

1873. She moved to Moundsville, WV with her family shortly after 1880. Mary<br />

graduated from Moundsville High School in 1892. She was married to Thomas J.<br />

Lacey in Moundsville on September 7, 1905. Thomas, born in New York October 8,<br />

1866, was a son <strong>of</strong> Mathew and Johanna Burke Lacey. Like her sister Catherine,<br />

Mary also worked as a teacher in the Marshall County schools. Thomas and Mary<br />

lived in Moundsville until her death. She died tragically from suicide by hanging on<br />

June 16, 1928. She was buried at Martins Ferry, Ohio.<br />

Mary and Thomas had one daughter:<br />

60. i. Agnes T. Lacey (1906 – 1993)<br />

23. Agnes T. <strong>Halpin</strong> (Robert 2 , <strong>James</strong> 1 ) was born in Zaleski, Vinton County, Ohio<br />

February 24, 1875. She married <strong>James</strong> Nesbitt Wells on April 20, 1907. They were<br />

married in St. Francis Xavier Church in Moundsville, WV. <strong>James</strong> was a son <strong>of</strong><br />

Charles Prather Wells and Martha Nesbitt Wells. He was born at Wells Bottom,<br />

Marshall County, WV on January 30, 1876. In the early years <strong>of</strong> their marriage they<br />

lived on their farm in Wells Bottom in southern Marshall County. In about 1922 they<br />

moved to a home at 312 Tenth Street in Moundsville where they lived until <strong>James</strong>’<br />

death. <strong>James</strong> Nesbitt Wells died August 6, 1949. Following his death Agnes lived<br />

with her daughter Martha at 915 Sixth Street in Moundsville. Agnes died on<br />

September 9, 1955. She is buried in Greenlawn Cemetery, New Martinsville, WV.<br />

Agnes and <strong>James</strong> had three children:<br />

61. i. Charles Prather Wells (1908 – 1998)<br />

62. ii. Robert <strong>Halpin</strong> Wells (1910 – 1953)<br />

63. iii. Martha Wells (1912 – 1990)<br />

24. Jennie M. <strong>Halpin</strong> (Robert 2 , <strong>James</strong> 1 ) was born in Zaleski, Ohio in October, 1876.<br />

She moved to Moundsville with her family shortly after 1880. Jennie graduated from<br />

Moundsville High School in 1895. She married Thomas M. Reese in Moundsville on<br />

September 26, 1906. Thomas Reese, son <strong>of</strong> John and Mary Reese, was born in Wales<br />

in May, 1872. Following their marriage, Jennie and Thomas lived in Canonsburg,<br />

Pennsylvania where Thomas was a Justice <strong>of</strong> The Peace. No records beyond 1920<br />

have yet been found.<br />

Jennie and Thomas had five children:<br />

64. i. Thomas Reese (1907 - 1982)<br />

65. ii. John Paul Reese (1910 - )<br />

66. iii. Mary J. Reese (1912 - )<br />

25. Joseph M. <strong>Halpin</strong> (Robert 2 , <strong>James</strong> 1 ) was born in Zaleski, Ohio in February, 1879.<br />

His family moved to Moundsville, WV shortly after 1880. Joseph worked as a<br />

laborer for the railroad in Moundsville. He died in November, 1907. We was not<br />

married.<br />

26. Cecelia <strong>Halpin</strong> (Robert 2 , <strong>James</strong> 1 ) was born in Zaleski, Ohio on October 23, 1882.<br />

Shortly after her birth the family moved to Moundsville, <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong>. She<br />

graduated from Moundsville High School in 1898. Cecelia was married to William<br />

F. Bronsell in the Catholic Church in Moundsville on October 15, 1903. William was<br />

born in Cook County, Illinois in 1875. For several years after their marriage Cecelia<br />

and William lived in Moundsville. In 1911 they moved to Shreveport, Louisiana<br />

where William was employed as an oil field laborer. They lived in Shreveport until<br />

their deaths. Cecelia died in October, 1970.<br />

Cecelia and William had three children:<br />

71. iii. William T. Bronsell (1911 - 1973)<br />

27. Robert <strong>Halpin</strong> (Robert 2 , <strong>James</strong> 1 ) was born in Moundsville, <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> October<br />

21, 1883. He died in Moundsville from pneumonia on April 28, 1904. He was not<br />

married.<br />

28. Christopher Columbus <strong>Halpin</strong> (Robert 2 , <strong>James</strong> 1 ) was born in Moundsville, WV<br />

December 9, 1884. At the time he registered for the draft (1918) for World War I he<br />

was living in Jacksonville, Tennessee. He was working as a laborer for Mason &<br />

Hanger, Co, an engineering and construction company. In 1942 when he registered<br />

for the draft for World War II he was living at 734 Howard St. in San Francisco,<br />

California but was about to move to Great Falls, Montana. Both draft registration<br />

records indicate that he was missing his left arm. It is not known whether this was<br />

due to an injury or a birth defect. He does not appear to have been married.<br />

29. Anna <strong>Halpin</strong> (John 2 , <strong>James</strong> 1 ) was born in Marion County, Ohio in July, 1873.<br />

The family later moved to Toledo, Ohio. Throughout her life, Anna lived at home<br />

with her parents in Toledo, Ohio. She was not employed and never married. Anna<br />

<strong>Halpin</strong> died in Toledo, Ohio on June 10, 1926.<br />

30. Lillian <strong>Halpin</strong> (John 2 , <strong>James</strong> 1 ) was born in Marion County, Ohio in November,<br />

1875. Like her sister, Anna, Lillian also lived at home with her parents in Toledo,<br />

Ohio. She was employed as a stenographer with a glass company. She does not<br />

appear to have ever married. Lillian <strong>Halpin</strong> died in Toledo, Ohio on October 28,<br />

1942.<br />

31. Mary <strong>Halpin</strong> (John 2 , <strong>James</strong> 1 ) was born in Ohio in August, 1886. Mary also lived<br />

in Toledo, Ohio with her parents. She was not employed. Mary died in Toledo,<br />

Ohio on April 3, 1918.<br />

32. Annie <strong>Halpin</strong> (Patrick 2 , <strong>James</strong> 1 ) was born in 1877 in Ste. Genevieve County,<br />

Missouri. She died at age eight on September 8, 1885 in Saline Township, Perry<br />

County, Missouri.<br />

33. George Edward <strong>Halpin</strong> (Patrick 2 , <strong>James</strong> 1 ) was born in Missouri on August 30,<br />

1878. He married his wife Lizzie in 1907. At the time <strong>of</strong> his World War I draft<br />

registration he was a farmer living in Clay County, Arkansas. Sometime between<br />

1920 and 1930 they moved to California. In 1930 George and Lizzie lived in<br />

Pasadena, CA where Lizzie was employed as a waitress and George was unemployed.<br />

They do not appear to have had any children.<br />

34. Sarah <strong>Halpin</strong> (Patrick 2 , <strong>James</strong> 1 ) was born in Saline Township, Missouri on<br />

October 1, 1884. As <strong>of</strong> 1900 she was living at home with her parents in Ste.<br />

Genevieve County, Missouri. No later records have yet been found.<br />

35. Charles Patrick <strong>Halpin</strong> (Patrick 2 , <strong>James</strong> 1 ) was born in Missouri on March 28,<br />

1888. He married Dollie G. Fenton in St. Francois County, Missouri on July 19,<br />

1910. Dollie Fenton, born in 1891 in Illinois, was a daughter <strong>of</strong> Bartholomew<br />

Fenton. In 1916 when he registered for the draft he was a farmer in Ste. Genevieve<br />

County, Missouri. Charles died sometime between 1916 and 1920, possibly as a war<br />

casualty although there is no record to document this.<br />

Charles and Dollie had two daughters:<br />

72. i. Beaulah M. <strong>Halpin</strong> (1916 - 2007)<br />

73. ii. Dorothy <strong>Halpin</strong> (1918 - )<br />

36. William Paul <strong>Halpin</strong> (Patrick 2 , <strong>James</strong> 1 ) was born in Missouri August 27, 1896.<br />

He grew up in Ste. Genevieve County, Missouri. He was married to Bertha E. Elders<br />

in Kennett, Missouri on June 27, 1914. Bertha, a daughter <strong>of</strong> William and Julia<br />

Porter Elders, was born in Madison County, Missouri April 13, 1896. In 1920<br />

William and Bertha were living with William’s parents where he assisted his father in<br />

on September 22, 1967 in Fredericktown Missouri. He is buried in Marcus Memorial<br />

Cemetery in Fredericktown.<br />

41. Margaret Kavanaugh (Jane Kavanaugh 2 , <strong>James</strong> 1 ) was born in Hubbard, Ohio in<br />

1877. She married Michael J. Murphy in 1896. Michael, born in Birmingham,<br />

England in 1870, came to the U.S. around 1882. Michael and Margaret resided in<br />

Youngstown, Ohio where he was a tavern owner. Margaret died in Youngstown on<br />

July 13, 1932.<br />

43. Cecelia Casey (Ellen Casey 2 , <strong>James</strong> 1 ) was born in Columbus, Ohio in 1885. She<br />

lived at home with her parents until at least 1930 at which time she was single and not<br />

44. Ralph John Casey (Ellen Casey 2 , <strong>James</strong> 1 ) was born in Columbus, Ohio July 22,<br />

1886. He married Anna E. Jaeger in Columbus in 1918. Anna, born in 1886 in Ohio,<br />

was a daughter <strong>of</strong> Albert W. Jaeger. Ralph and Anna lived in the Columbus area their<br />

entire lives. Ralph was employed as a locomotive engineer for the railroad.<br />

lived their entire married lives in Columbus, Ohio where he was employed as a<br />

salesman. Helen died in Columbus on April 25, 1990.<br />

FOURTH GENERATION<br />

48. Loretto A. Ault (John Ralph Ault 3 , Mary <strong>Halpin</strong> Ault 2 , <strong>James</strong> 1 ) was born in<br />

Parkersburg, <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> on May 23, 1889. She married William Frederick Noll in<br />

Parkersburg in 1910. William, a son <strong>of</strong> William H. Noll, was born in Pittsburgh, PA<br />

June 16, 1890. At the time <strong>of</strong> their marriage, William was employed as a laborer in a<br />

furniture upholstering operation in Parkersburg. Sometime before 1917 they moved<br />

to Allegheny County, Pennsylvania where he worked as a foreman for a furniture<br />

upholsterer. Sometime after 1930, Loretto and William were divorced and she moved<br />

back to Parkersburg. She died in Parkersburg November 23, 1950 and was buried in<br />

Mt. Carmel Cemetery.<br />

49. Ralph Gregory Ault (John Ralph Ault 3 , Mary <strong>Halpin</strong> Ault 2 , <strong>James</strong> 1 ) was born in<br />

Parkersburg, <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> on July 23, 1901. He married Elizabeth Barbara Hines in<br />

Parkersburg on April 12, 1928. They lived in Parkersburg where Ralph was<br />

employed as a shipping clerk. Ralph died December 19, 1950 in St. Joseph’s<br />

Hospital in Parkersburg. He suffered a cerebral hemorrhage as a result <strong>of</strong> a fall in<br />

their home. At the time <strong>of</strong> his death, Ralph was employed as a salesman in the<br />

advertising business.<br />

Kingwood, <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> in 1918. She married Robert E. Baron on July 11, 1941 in<br />

Wheeling, <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong>. Robert, born in Wheeling in 1918, was a son <strong>of</strong> William<br />

and Jane Baron. No later records have yet been found.<br />

52. Mary S. Ault (Joseph Edward Ault 3 , Mary <strong>Halpin</strong> Ault 2 , <strong>James</strong> 1 ) was born in<br />

<strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> in 1920. She lived with her parents in Preston County, WV until at<br />

least 1930. No later records have yet been found.<br />

56. Joseph W. Ault was born on July 25, 1926 in Preston County, <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong>. He<br />

died August 6, 1996 in Miami, Florida. No record <strong>of</strong> a marriage or children have yet<br />

been found.<br />

57. John Charles Ault (Charles William Ault 3 , Mary <strong>Halpin</strong> Ault 2 , <strong>James</strong> 1 ) was born<br />

in Parkersburg, <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> March 10, 1909. He married Edverna Belle<br />

Postlethwait in New Martinsville, WV on December 13, 1936. Edverna, born in<br />

Wetzel County, WV March 15, 1908, was a daughter <strong>of</strong> William J. and Edna Norris<br />

Postlethwait. Sometime around 1942 they moved to Dade County, Florida along with<br />

John’s father, Charles. John died in Dade County on December 17, 1985. Edverna<br />

died in Miami, Florida on October 1, 2001. No record <strong>of</strong> children has yet been found.<br />

58. Richard B. Ault (Charles William Ault 3 , Mary <strong>Halpin</strong> Ault 2 , <strong>James</strong> 1 ) was born in<br />

Parkersburg, <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> on November 28, 1915. He moved with his family to<br />

Dade County, Florida around 1942. At some time later he moved to North Dakota.<br />

Richard died in <strong>James</strong>town, North Dakota on January 17, 1999. No records <strong>of</strong> a<br />

marriage or children have yet been found.<br />

59. Harriett S. Ault (Charles William Ault 3 , Mary <strong>Halpin</strong> Ault 2 , <strong>James</strong> 1 ) was born in<br />

Parkers burg, WV in 1918. Through at least 1939 she lived with her parents in<br />

Parkersburg. No later records have yet been found.<br />

60. Agnes T. Lacey (Mary 3 , Robert 2 , <strong>James</strong> 1 ) was born in Wellsburg, <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong><br />

on October 27, 1906. She lived with her family in Moundsville, WV. Agnes<br />

graduated from Moundsville High School in 1923. Following her mother’s suicide in<br />

1928 she moved to Shreveport, Louisiana to live with her aunt, Cecelia <strong>Halpin</strong><br />

Bronsell. In Shreveport she was employed as a stenographer and private secretary in<br />

the oil industry. She later moved to Houston, Texas, continuing her employment in<br />

the oil industry. Agnes died in Houston on November 17, 1993. She was never<br />

married.<br />

61. Charles Prather Wells (Agnes 3 , Robert 2 , <strong>James</strong> 1 ) was born in Marshall County,<br />

WV on May 1, 1908. He graduated from Moundsville High School in 1927, received<br />

an AB Degree from <strong>West</strong> Liberty State College in 1929, and an MA Degree from the<br />

University <strong>of</strong> Pittsburgh in 1931. Charles was married to Grace Lillian Raymer on<br />

November 10, 1931 in St. Francis Xavier Church in Moundsville, WV. Grace, a<br />

daughter <strong>of</strong> Isaac Newton Raymer and Mary Ellen Trouten Raymer, was born in<br />

Kirkwood, Ohio April 24, 1909. Charles became principal <strong>of</strong> Nicholas County High<br />

School in Summersville, <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> in 1939. He held that position until he retired<br />

in 1973. Charles and Grace continued to live in Summersville until his death on<br />

January 29, 1998. After Charles’ death, Grace moved to Clearwater, Florida to live<br />

with her daughter, Jean Wells Foster. Grace died August 30, 2009 in Pinellas Park,<br />

Florida.<br />

62. Robert <strong>Halpin</strong> Wells (Agnes 3 , Robert 2 , <strong>James</strong> 1 ) was born on the J. N. Wells<br />

farm, Wells Bottom, Marshall County on March 24, 1910. He was married to<br />

Maxine Mason on June 16, 1939 in St. Francis Xavier Church, Moundsville.<br />

Maxine Mason, born June 16, 1915, was a daughter <strong>of</strong> Archibald Mason and<br />

Georgia McKimmie.<br />

Robert attended Moundsville High School, graduating from the Commercial<br />

Course in 1928. He lettered in baseball in his junior and senior years and also<br />

played basketball. Following graduation, he was employed at the Fokker<br />

Aircraft Company in Glen Dale, WV. The 1930 U.S. Census lists his<br />

occupation as “bookkeeper”. He remained at Fokker until the closure <strong>of</strong> that<br />

operation in 1931. In 1934, he entered <strong>West</strong> Liberty State College. He received his<br />

Standard Normal Degree in August 1936 after which he taught school in Marshall<br />

County. It was during this time that he met Maxine Mason who also was a teacher<br />

in Marshall County. Their betrothal was announced in the spring <strong>of</strong> 1939. At that<br />

time, Robert was employed at the <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> State Penitentiary. Following their<br />

marriage, Robert and Maxine lived on Jefferson Avenue immediately across the<br />

street from the penitentiary. Sometime in the mid-1940’s they moved to a new home<br />

at 1511 Seventh Street, Moundsville.<br />

In December <strong>of</strong> 1939, Robert Wells was appointed to serve as secretary to the<br />

warden <strong>of</strong> the penitentiary, Leo Collison. In 1943, he became the manager <strong>of</strong> the<br />

business <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> the penitentiary, a position he held until his death.<br />

Robert Wells was a member <strong>of</strong> the Young Democrats Club. He became well known<br />

both in Marshall County and across the state for his work in support <strong>of</strong> Democrat<br />

Party candidates. He served as a member <strong>of</strong> the <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> House <strong>of</strong> Delegates<br />

in 1951 and 1952.<br />

Robert died unexpectedly on February 28, 1953 in Charleston, <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong>. He<br />

was in Charleston on <strong>of</strong>ficial business for the penitentiary. The cause <strong>of</strong><br />

death was diabetes. He is buried in Greenlawn Cemetery, New Martinsville.<br />

County, WV on October 14, 1912. She graduated from Moundsville High<br />

School in 1930. She married Ruel Dial in Moundsville on August 14, 1945.<br />

Ruel, born April 29, 1909 in Branchland, WV, was a son <strong>of</strong> J. Burgess and<br />

Carrie Dial.<br />

Martha and Ruel had two children:<br />

Martha Wells Dial died in Dallas, Texas in January, 1990. Ruel Dial died in<br />

Richmond, <strong>Virginia</strong> in November, 1976.<br />

64. Thomas Reese (Jennie 3 , Robert 2 , <strong>James</strong> 1 ) was born on July 23, 1907 in<br />

Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. He graduated from high School in Canonsburg and<br />

attended two years <strong>of</strong> college. He married his wife Beatrice in 1929. Beatrice was<br />

born in Ohio in 1911. During their marriage, which was short-lived, they lived in<br />

Akron, Ohio where Thomas worked in a tire factory and Beatrice was a telephone<br />

operator. Thomas and Beatrice divorced (date not certain) and Thomas moved back<br />

to Canonsburg. They had no children. He enlisted in the U.S. Army as a Private on<br />

July 30, 1942. Details <strong>of</strong> his service have not yet been found. Thomas died in<br />

Canonsburg in April <strong>of</strong> 1982.<br />

65. John Paul Reese (Jennie 3 , Robert 2 , <strong>James</strong> 1 ) was born in Canonsburg, Pa in July<br />

1909. No records past 1920 have yet been found.<br />

66. Mary J. Reese (Jennie 3 , Robert 2 , <strong>James</strong> 1 ) was born in Canonsburg, PA in 1912.<br />

She graduated from high school in Canonsburg. In 1930 she was a student nurse at<br />

Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA. No records past 1930 have yet been found.<br />

67. Catherine C. Reese (Jennie 3 , Robert 2 , <strong>James</strong> 1 ) was born in Canonsburg, PA in<br />

1915. No records past 1920 have yet been found.<br />

68. Robert D. Reese (Jennie 3 , Robert 2 , <strong>James</strong> 1 ) was born in Canonsburg, PA in 1917.<br />

He enlisted in the U.S. Army on April 3, 1941. At that time he was living in Erie<br />

County, New York. No other records have yet been found.<br />

69. Mary F. Bronsell (Cecelia 3 , Robert 2 , <strong>James</strong> 1 ) was born in Moundsville, WV on<br />

September 30, 1904. She moved with her family to Shreveport, Louisiana in 1911.<br />

No record past 1920 has yet been found.<br />

70. Elanore Cecelia Bronsell (Cecelia 3 , Robert 2 , <strong>James</strong> 1 ) was born in Moundsville,<br />

WV April 9, 1906.<br />

71. William Francis Bronsell (Cecelia 3 , Robert 2 , <strong>James</strong> 1 ) was born in Hope,<br />

Arkansas on August 15, 1911. Sometime after 1930 he married Olive Head. He<br />

died on October 14, 1973 in Nacogdoches, Texas.<br />
