Syllabus or <strong>Course</strong> <strong>Outline</strong><br />

Horizontal Planning Document: In two pages or less, the MYP course outline<br />

required for application form, part B should be a document that may be shared with the<br />

school community (Back to School Night, Open Houses, etc.). Parents and students<br />

should come to understand how the MYP is implemented in the course. Teachers of<br />

the same subject and level should work together to create an outline that describes<br />

their course. This applies across partnership schools.<br />

I. DESCRIPTION:<br />

Middle School Instrumental Music<br />

Ms. Loni M. Elley-instructor<br />

Students will learn to play various instruments. They have the opportunity to decide<br />

on a single instrument. They will decide on an instrument from the following instrument<br />

families: Strings, Woodwinds, Brass or Percussion. Students will learn to play these<br />

instruments individually and within a group. They will learn the importance of “teamwork,”<br />

responsibility, self creativity, and how to take risks as critics and as performers. This of<br />

course fitting in with the IB Learner Profile: The IB learner will strive to be an Inquirer,<br />

Knowledgeable, Thinker, Communicator, Principled, Open-Minded, Caring, Risk-taker,<br />

Balanced and Reflective.<br />

II. How will this course use MYP Aims and Objectives and yet meet National and State<br />

Standards?<br />

Listed in the table below is how all three, MYP Aims and Objectives, National and State<br />

Standards stand alone and yet relate to each other.<br />

III. In accordance with the MYP Areas of interaction (Approaches to Learning, Community


and Service, Human Ingenuity and Health and Social Eduaction), we will use various<br />

materials help us learn within these approaches. Most often, students will need a method<br />

book (each grade level/class will require a different one-see handbook), concert music, an<br />

instrument, and a Developmental Workbook (provided). All of which will have an equal role<br />

in assisting each student with learning.<br />

VI. Methods of assessment :<br />

Students will be assessed in various forms. Because this is a performance based class, most<br />

often individual and ensemble performances will be used assessment. However, written<br />

projects, quizzes and writing assignments within their developmental workbooks will be<br />

taken into account to assess each students’ knowledge and understanding of materials and<br />

concepts.<br />
