On July 24th, Elias Moon Camp 2 held a workday in
Tallapoosa, GA’s Hollywood Cemetery. The main
objective was to place the new Geo. Wing, Jr. headstone
next to his well-worn stone, discovered a few years ago.
ILLINOIS
P. H. Sheridan Camp 2 marched in the Elgin July 4th
and Hinsdale parades. The Camp’s banner was out in
front, carried by Brs. Bruce Mayhugh and Josh Schlapp.
They were followed by Chuck Keysor, waving his sword,
along with PDC Steve Westlake with the Camp flag, Br.
Guy Welch with our Nat. Colors and CC Jim Zingales.
Holding up the third row all by himself was Steve Foster
(Bugles Across America), who brought his horn and
played many tunes as we walked down the street. Our
last marcher was Sue Beiderer, passing out candy to the
kids.
The crowd’s reaction included a standing ovations,
cheering, waving, singing, and dancing, (yes, dancing!).
Officer Ernest Everett Blevins at the Dunn grave.
This job completed, the crew of CC Ted Hackney, DC
Eric Peterson, and DGRO Ernest Everett Blevins worked
on the site of Rev. John H. Dunn, whose VA stone was
sunk so deep that only his name showed. Previous trips
revealed he served with the 1st GA US. While
excavating the stone, it was discovered that he also had a
private stone, six inches under the surface behind the VA
stone. Both stones were restored to the surface and
replaced back to back as they had been.
Buckhannon Camp 49 Restores Monument
Pvt. Jesse Taylor must have been a popular young man
in his hometown of Jollytown, PA. He was the first
member of the 7th WV and the first resident of Jollytown
to be killed in action during the Civil War. A rebel bullet
at a battle just west of Romney, WV, struck him down.
In an unusual gesture, his unit and the village of
Jollytown erected a monument to his memory in 1892.
Patriotic Numbers: With 24 of 28 Departments reporting, only 35% of our Camps participate in events to educate the public like
speakers programs, living histories, parades and displays.
