Leadership in the Arts: Organizations photo: Jeff Ross Reno Philharmonic Since its first public performance in August of 1969 at the Pioneer Center for the Arts, the Reno Philharmonic has focused on audience development and artistic excellence - steadily growing in both areas. Through forty years and three conductors—Gregory Stone, Ron Daniels, and Barry Jekowsky— the Philharmonic has worked with other arts organizations to build a strong cultural community in Northern Nevada. Attracting thousands of people to the area and contributing to its economic growth and vitality, the orchestra has received many local awards and accolades for its musical distinction, community outreach efforts and educational initiatives. Celebrate Strings is one such program, providing free violin lessons to students attending Bernice Matthews Elementary School in Reno. For many, this is the first exposure to any type of orchestral instrument. The program strives to instill a love of music that will inspire the students to continue musical training and appreciation beyond the eight-week program. The lessons provided by the Reno Philharmonic also help to improve social relations among the participants and increase the students’ confidence and self-esteem. In addition to the Celebrate Strings program, the Reno Philharmonic offers a wide array of programming including the MasterClassics Concert series, Young People’s Concerts, the Discover Music program, two youth orchestras and Preview from the Podium. The Philharmonic has attracted internationally known guest artists including Luciano Pavarotti, Judy Collins, Ray Charles and Jose Iturbi. The board and staff of the Philharmonic provide leadership that has contributed to its success throughout the years. As an “arts leader in Northern Nevada,” wrote nominator Christine Fey, Arts and Culture Manager for the City of Reno, the Reno Philharmonic is consistently recognized as a source of pride in the community, giving the opportunity each year for more than five hundred performers to make music and more than fifty thousand audience members to experience their art.” The Governor’s Arts Awards is an appropriate recognition as the Reno Philharmonic celebrates its fortieth anniversary this year.
Patronage in the Arts Estipona Group For more than 15 years, Estipona Group has provided innovative marketing and communications solutions to clients in Reno and throughout the region. Not only does Estipona Group stand out in the communications field -- garnering accolades and awards for their creative vision-- its members give generously of their time and talents to the community and to the arts sector in particular. Joe Crowley, former President of the University of Nevada, Reno, writes that, “…this company’s wide-reaching, continuing and consistently sterling performance in serving the arts in Nevada is a reflection of the vision and passion of its founder. Edward Estipona is a person of great energy, creativity, and commitment.” Indeed, Edward Estipona’s philosophy of “passionate giving” is shared by his colleagues and employees, who also serve as members and trustees for local arts and community based organizations. This civic engagement ensures that Estipona Group stays abreast of community activities and developments and can provide timely and creative approaches to problem solving. Programs and campaigns that will be familiar to those who live in the Reno area such as “Rhythm and Rawhide,” “Food For Thought,” “America’s Adventure Place,” and their awardwinning “Greatest Hits” campaign for the Reno Philharmonic, reflect the creative work and passion of the Estipona Group. They have contributed tremendously to enriching the arts in the state of Nevada, bolstering audience participation, increasing membership subscriptions, and yielding higher fund-raising results. The group successfully designed and collaborated on Arts4Nevada.org, a grassroots online communications and advocacy campaign that made it easy for citizens to directly contact their legislators. Arts4Nevada.org encouraged an unprecedented advocacy thrust during the 2006 legislative session, which resulted in a $425,000 one-shot funding to the Nevada Arts Council. This money was distributed via grants to arts organizations throughout the state to support artists and arts programs. Although they are technically a “small business,” the reach of Estipona Group is limitless. Its commitment to community - local and statewide- as a primary client has resulted in a level of service that has consistently and economically enriched the lives of all Nevada citizens.
