Dear Friends:<br />

For 29 years, the Governor’s <strong>Arts</strong> Awards<br />

program has recognized outstanding<br />

achievements in the arts by artists and<br />

educators, arts organizations, corporate<br />

and individual patrons, public figures and<br />

dedicated volunteers. This year we honor our<br />

fellow citizens who demonstrate commitment,<br />

creativity, and passion. It is a privilege to<br />

publicly acknowledge <strong>Nevada</strong>ns <strong>of</strong> this caliber.<br />

Though I can’t be with you tonight, I send<br />

my best wishes for a wonderful evening<br />

to you all and congratulations to tonight’s<br />

honored award recipients - Dr. James Winn,<br />

Doug Groves, Reno Philharmonic Association, Las Vegas Youth Orchestras, Jane<br />

Excellence in the <strong>Arts</strong><br />

Dr. James Winn<br />

Described by his colleagues as modest, unassuming, gracious,<br />

and utterly reliable, Dr. James (Jim) Winn is a distinguished<br />

educator who has truly influenced the caliber <strong>of</strong> musical talent<br />

within the state with his high level <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essionalism and<br />

dedication to musical education. Winn earned advanced degrees<br />

at the New England Conservatory <strong>of</strong> Music and the University<br />

<strong>of</strong> Michigan before moving on to a distinguished career that<br />

includes more than ten years as solo pianist for the New York<br />

City Ballet at Lincoln Center and pr<strong>of</strong>essional ensemble work<br />

with the New York New Music Ensemble, Hexagon, the Chamber<br />

Music Society <strong>of</strong> Lincoln Center, Telluride Chamber Music Festival<br />

and the Argenta Trio, the resident chamber group at University <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Nevada</strong>, Reno.<br />

Winn’s faculty appointments include those at the University <strong>of</strong><br />

Texas, the University <strong>of</strong> Michigan, the New England Conservatory<br />

<strong>of</strong> Music, and the Aspen Music Festival. Harvard, New York<br />

University, Yale, Peabody Conservatory, Cornell, and Universidad<br />

Veracruzana in Mexico are among the academic institutions that<br />

have hosted Dr. Winn’s master classses. Dr. Kenneth Osowski,<br />

Assistant Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Music at York College <strong>of</strong> Pennsylvania<br />

wrote in a nomination letter that Winn was “…easily the biggest<br />

influence on my decision to pursue a serious career in classical<br />

music. In his performances, I witnessed, and continue to witness,<br />

the infinite possibilities <strong>of</strong> expression in music performed with<br />

intelligence, passion and technical precision.”<br />

Winn is featured as soloist, chamber musician, or composer on<br />

more than two dozen CDs, performing with artists as violinist<br />

Rolf Schulte and interpreting the works <strong>of</strong> contemporary<br />

composers such as John Adams, Michael Colgrass, and Melinda<br />

Wagner.<br />

A recipient <strong>of</strong> the University <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nevada</strong>, Reno’s College <strong>of</strong> Liberal<br />

<strong>Arts</strong>’ prestigious Mousel/Feltner award for creative activity and<br />

an Artist Fellowship in the Performing <strong>Arts</strong> from the <strong>Nevada</strong> <strong>Arts</strong><br />

<strong>Council</strong>, Dr. James Winn continually brings joy and enlightenment<br />

to the people <strong>of</strong> our state.


Excellence in Folk and Traditional <strong>Arts</strong><br />

Doug Groves<br />

When true artisanship takes the functional beyond necessity,<br />

craft becomes art. Doug Groves’ braided rawhide horse gear<br />

exemplifies this perfect marriage <strong>of</strong> beauty and utility. Groves<br />

started making horse tack—riatas, quirts, reins, buttons, and<br />

more—over thirty years ago. Once the cow boss on the TS<br />

Ranch outside <strong>of</strong> Battle Mountain, <strong>Nevada</strong>, Groves now lives<br />

and works in Wellington. He learned from his peers and passes<br />

on techniques and tricks to others in the traditional manner <strong>of</strong><br />

cowboys.<br />

“There’s a genealogy behind learning all this stuff. When you’re<br />

sitting around the bunkhouse, and somebody is teaching you<br />

how to tie a particular button or something, you’ll get to visiting<br />

and you’ll say, ‘Well, where did you learn that?’ And they’ll say,<br />

‘Well, Roger Fischer taught me that when we worked at the 25<br />

together.’ You learn it from this guy, from that guy, and knowing<br />

where it came from is like having a quilt your Grandma made, it<br />

means something to you.”<br />

Groves’ work is finely detailed, meticulously executed, beautiful<br />

and functional. He carefully prepares his own rawhide and<br />

creates each piece with incredible attention to detail, choosing<br />

and preparing his rawhide string with care to create the tight,<br />

straight and even braiding that characterizes his work. His pieces<br />

are equally sought after by collectors and cowboys, a compliment<br />

to both the artistry and functionality <strong>of</strong> his work.<br />

Generous in sharing his expertise with others, Groves<br />

demonstrates extraordinary commitment to preserving the<br />

tradition <strong>of</strong> rawhide braiding. A master artist in the <strong>Nevada</strong><br />

<strong>Arts</strong> <strong>Council</strong> Folklife Apprenticeship program, he leads Rawhide<br />

Braiding workshops nearly every year at the National Cowboy<br />

Poetry Gathering.<br />

Groves has been featured in exhibitions across the region and<br />

in nationally distributed publications such as Trappings <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Great Basin Buckaroo and Works and Conversation. Groves<br />

created From Hide to Hackamore: “Rawhide Braiding Techniques<br />

and Traditions,” an educational slide presentation describing<br />

his traditional work, which he has presented to audiences<br />

throughout the state. Doug Groves holds an abiding respect for<br />

the traditional arts <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Nevada</strong> cowboy and carries on these<br />

traditions with humor, humility, and an obvious love <strong>of</strong> his trade.


Leadership in the <strong>Arts</strong>: Education<br />

Las Vegas Youth Orchestras<br />

The Las Vegas Youth Orchestras, comprised <strong>of</strong> four performing<br />

arts groups for young people, exists due to a long-time, unique<br />

partnership among three supporting organizations: the Clark<br />

County School District, the City <strong>of</strong> Las Vegas and the Friends <strong>of</strong><br />

the Las Vegas Youth Orchestras. This collaboration allows for<br />

tuition-free program participation for any youth who qualifies<br />

to be in the Ensemble, Sinfonia, Symphony, or Philharmonic<br />

orchestral performing groups. Southern <strong>Nevada</strong> has benefited<br />

greatly from this rich cultural resource, which provides a<br />

training ground for future musicians, music-lovers and music<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essionals, as well as a high-level performance repertoire for<br />

the community.<br />

The organization has been nationally recognized as a model<br />

for community involvement and positive action, providing an<br />

educational program <strong>of</strong> extra curricular musical training that is<br />

enriching and engaging. A testament to the program’s success<br />

is that alumni frequently pursue collegiate and graduate studies<br />

in music or music education, and then return as contributing<br />

citizens to the southern <strong>Nevada</strong> cultural community. Jessica<br />

Williams, a former program participant, volunteer and Las Vegas<br />

Youth Orchestras (LVYO) staff member, says that the program<br />

“taught me responsibility, leadership and understanding, and<br />

(has) given me an undying love for orchestral music.”<br />

“All <strong>Nevada</strong>ns should be proud <strong>of</strong> this outstanding group <strong>of</strong><br />

young musicians. Truly these youth orchestras are gems in the<br />

cultural life <strong>of</strong> this community, providing the opportunities for<br />

great musical achievement and enabling the youth in our schools<br />

to become the future musicians <strong>of</strong> our state and country,”<br />

wrote Patrick C. Clary, a founding director <strong>of</strong> the Las Vegas<br />

Philharmonic.<br />

Nearly 300 young people presently participate in LVYO. Their<br />

dedication to the rigorous and challenging work that playing<br />

music at this level entails is evidence <strong>of</strong> the program’s success.<br />

LVYO provides an amazing opportunity for these students to<br />

learn important life skills such as discipline and responsibility,<br />

master challenges, manage time, and most importantly, to<br />

express themselves creatively through the arts.


Leadership in the <strong>Arts</strong>: Individuals<br />

Robert and Jane Fielden<br />

The architectural and cultural landscapes <strong>of</strong> southern <strong>Nevada</strong><br />

have been immeasurably enriched by the talent and dedication<br />

<strong>of</strong> Robert (Bob) and Jane Fielden. A husband and wife team who<br />

respectively work as architect and interior designer, the Fieldens<br />

frequently partner on projects. If you have been in a library, a<br />

museum, or a performing arts center in southern <strong>Nevada</strong> during<br />

the last decade, then you have likely seen the work <strong>of</strong> Jane and<br />

Robert Fielden.<br />

The Fieldens came to <strong>Nevada</strong> during the late 1960s to work<br />

on a casino project and quickly immersed themselves in their<br />

new community, going on to become leaders in shaping and<br />

championing cultural and artistic development throughout the<br />

state. They helped to create the “Suitcase Gallery,” a traveling<br />

art collection that was one <strong>of</strong> the earliest visual arts education<br />

efforts in Clark County. They have served on numerous public<br />

committees, including the Beautification Las Vegas, Clark County<br />

Parks and Recreation, the Allied <strong>Arts</strong> <strong>Council</strong> <strong>of</strong> Southern <strong>Nevada</strong><br />

and the <strong>Arts</strong> District Neighborhood Advisory Committee for the<br />

Downtown <strong>Arts</strong> District. Bob also serves as a member <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Board <strong>of</strong> Directors <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nevada</strong> Humanities.<br />

In their pr<strong>of</strong>essional work, the Fieldens have advanced the<br />

fields <strong>of</strong> architecture and interior design throughout the state,<br />

sharing their love <strong>of</strong> human environment with their clients and<br />

the community. They have won numerous awards for their design<br />

work including the Award <strong>of</strong> Merit for Design Excellence from the<br />

Western Mountain region <strong>of</strong> the American Institute <strong>of</strong> Architects<br />

(AIA), the Owens-Corning National Award for Energy Conservation<br />

and the Chicago Athenaeum/American Architecture Award.<br />

Preserving and sharing <strong>Nevada</strong>’s history and culture has<br />

been a driving force behind some <strong>of</strong> their biggest community<br />

development endeavors. Their projects include the Reno Sparks<br />

Convention Center Remodel and Renovation, Summerlin Library<br />

and Performing <strong>Arts</strong> Center, KNPR 86 Radio Station, UNLV Master<br />

Plan and Update, Chaparral High School Theatre Addition,<br />

Las Vegas Convention Center Master Plan and the McCarran<br />

International Airport’s D Concourse.<br />

Jane and Bob Fielden have dedicated their lives and their work to<br />

supporting the arts in <strong>Nevada</strong>, promoting the preservation <strong>of</strong> the<br />

state’s historical resources and promoting the development <strong>of</strong><br />

continued arts patronage among the state’s population. It would<br />

be hard to find anyone more deserving <strong>of</strong> this award.


Leadership in the <strong>Arts</strong>: Organizations<br />

Reno Philharmonic<br />

Since its first public performance in August <strong>of</strong> 1969 at the<br />

Pioneer Center for the <strong>Arts</strong>, the Reno Philharmonic has<br />

focused on audience development and artistic excellence -<br />

steadily growing in both areas. Through forty years and three<br />

conductors—Gregory Stone, Ron Daniels, and Barry Jekowsky—<br />

the Philharmonic has worked with other arts organizations to<br />

build a strong cultural community in Northern <strong>Nevada</strong>. Attracting<br />

thousands <strong>of</strong> people to the area and contributing to its economic<br />

growth and vitality, the orchestra has received many local<br />

awards and accolades for its musical distinction, community<br />

outreach efforts and educational initiatives.<br />

Celebrate Strings is one such program, providing free violin<br />

lessons to students attending Bernice Matthews Elementary<br />

School in Reno. For many, this is the first exposure to any type<br />

<strong>of</strong> orchestral instrument. The program strives to instill a love <strong>of</strong><br />

music that will inspire the students to continue musical training<br />

and appreciation beyond the eight-week program. The lessons<br />

provided by the Reno Philharmonic also help to improve social<br />

relations among the participants and increase the students’<br />

confidence and self-esteem.<br />

In addition to the Celebrate Strings program, the Reno<br />

Philharmonic <strong>of</strong>fers a wide array <strong>of</strong> programming including the<br />

MasterClassics Concert series, Young People’s Concerts, the<br />

Discover Music program, two youth orchestras and Preview<br />

from the Podium. The Philharmonic has attracted internationally<br />

known guest artists including Luciano Pavarotti, Judy Collins, Ray<br />

Charles and Jose Iturbi.<br />

The board and staff <strong>of</strong> the Philharmonic provide leadership that<br />

has contributed to its success throughout the years. As an “arts<br />

leader in Northern <strong>Nevada</strong>,” wrote nominator Christine Fey, <strong>Arts</strong><br />

and Culture Manager for the City <strong>of</strong> Reno, the Reno Philharmonic<br />

is consistently recognized as a source <strong>of</strong> pride in the community,<br />

giving the opportunity each year for more than five hundred<br />

performers to make music and more than fifty thousand<br />

audience members to experience their art.”<br />

The Governor’s <strong>Arts</strong> Awards is an appropriate recognition as the<br />

Reno Philharmonic celebrates its fortieth anniversary this year.


Patronage in the <strong>Arts</strong><br />

Estipona Group<br />

For more than 15 years, Estipona Group has provided innovative<br />

marketing and communications solutions to clients in Reno and<br />

throughout the region. Not only does Estipona Group stand out<br />

in the communications field -- garnering accolades and awards<br />

for their creative vision-- its members give generously <strong>of</strong> their<br />

time and talents to the community and to the arts sector in<br />

particular.<br />

Joe Crowley, former President <strong>of</strong> the University <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nevada</strong>,<br />

Reno, writes that, “…this company’s wide-reaching, continuing<br />

and consistently sterling performance in serving the arts in<br />

<strong>Nevada</strong> is a reflection <strong>of</strong> the vision and passion <strong>of</strong> its founder.<br />

Edward Estipona is a person <strong>of</strong> great energy, creativity,<br />

and commitment.” Indeed, Edward Estipona’s philosophy <strong>of</strong><br />

“passionate giving” is shared by his colleagues and employees,<br />

who also serve as members and trustees for local arts and<br />

community based organizations. This civic engagement ensures<br />

that Estipona Group stays abreast <strong>of</strong> community activities and<br />

developments and can provide timely and creative approaches to<br />

problem solving.<br />

Programs and campaigns that will be familiar to those who<br />

live in the Reno area such as “Rhythm and Rawhide,” “Food<br />

For Thought,” “America’s Adventure Place,” and their awardwinning<br />

“Greatest Hits” campaign for the Reno Philharmonic,<br />

reflect the creative work and passion <strong>of</strong> the Estipona Group.<br />

They have contributed tremendously to enriching the arts in the<br />

state <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nevada</strong>, bolstering audience participation, increasing<br />

membership subscriptions, and yielding higher fund-raising<br />

results.<br />

The group successfully designed and collaborated on<br />

<strong>Arts</strong>4<strong>Nevada</strong>.org, a grassroots online communications and<br />

advocacy campaign that made it easy for citizens to directly<br />

contact their legislators. <strong>Arts</strong>4<strong>Nevada</strong>.org encouraged an<br />

unprecedented advocacy thrust during the 2006 legislative<br />

session, which resulted in a $425,000 one-shot funding to the<br />

<strong>Nevada</strong> <strong>Arts</strong> <strong>Council</strong>. This money was distributed via grants to<br />

arts organizations throughout the state to support artists and<br />

arts programs.<br />

Although they are technically a “small business,” the reach <strong>of</strong><br />

Estipona Group is limitless. Its commitment to community - local<br />

and statewide- as a primary client has resulted in a level <strong>of</strong><br />

service that has consistently and economically enriched the lives<br />

<strong>of</strong> all <strong>Nevada</strong> citizens.


The Artists<br />

Lynda Yur<strong>of</strong>f<br />

Recipients <strong>of</strong> the 29th Annual Governors <strong>Arts</strong> Awards each<br />

receive an original painting by artist Lynda Yur<strong>of</strong>f. Born<br />

in Springfield, Illinois and graduating from Illinois State<br />

University, Yur<strong>of</strong>f’s early art experiences were shaped by<br />

university studio classes and visits to the Chicago Art<br />

Institute. She supported her passion for studio art with<br />

a series <strong>of</strong> jobs in graphic design before becoming an art<br />

teacher. Since moving to <strong>Nevada</strong> 30 years ago, Yur<strong>of</strong>f has<br />

taught art to children as an artist in residence with the <strong>Nevada</strong><br />

<strong>Arts</strong> <strong>Council</strong>, Sierra <strong>Arts</strong> and Very Special <strong>Arts</strong> <strong>Nevada</strong>, as<br />

well as painting and drawing classes at Truckee Meadows<br />

Community College. She is an award-winning artist with works<br />

represented in many private collections nationally as well<br />

as Bank <strong>of</strong> America and <strong>Nevada</strong> Museum <strong>of</strong> Art in Reno. This<br />

is Yur<strong>of</strong>f’s second Governor’s <strong>Arts</strong> Award commission.<br />

The Las Vegas<br />

Youth Orchestras<br />

Performing for the 29th Annual Governor’s <strong>Arts</strong> Awards<br />

ceremony are Sammi Ciarlo on violin, Silverado High School;<br />

Caitlin Stokes on violin, <strong>Nevada</strong> State High School; Sarah<br />

Evins on viola, Las Vegas Academy; Rachael White on cello,<br />

Las Vegas Academy; and Erin Barlow on bass, Coronado High<br />

School. All are members <strong>of</strong> the Las Vegas Youth Philharmonic,<br />

one <strong>of</strong> four separate ensembles <strong>of</strong> the Las Vegas Youth<br />

Orchestras, an after-school program that presently serves<br />

nearly 300 youth in southern <strong>Nevada</strong>. The two upper-level<br />

groups (Las Vegas Youth Philharmonic and Las Vegas Youth<br />

Symphony) perform symphonic repertoire as students prepare<br />

for entry into collegiate and pr<strong>of</strong>essional level organizations.<br />

The Las Vegas Youth Sinfonia and the Las Vegas Youth<br />

Ensemble provide training for younger students to develop into<br />

effective orchestral players, emphasizing the responsibility,<br />

commitment and teamwork necessary for successful<br />

performances.


The Artists<br />

Dr. James Winn<br />

Dr. James Winn, associate pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> piano and composition<br />

at the University <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nevada</strong>, Reno since 1997, has been<br />

described as a musician’s musician with an international<br />

reputation. Winn made his pr<strong>of</strong>essional debut with the Denver<br />

Symphony at the age <strong>of</strong> thirteen, and has been performing<br />

widely in North America, Europe and Japan ever since. Before<br />

relocating to Reno, Winn was solo pianist with the New York<br />

City Ballet for thirteen years. In addition, he was a member <strong>of</strong><br />

the New York New Music Ensemble and a frequent guest with<br />

the Chamber Music Society <strong>of</strong> Lincoln Center. He is currently a<br />

member <strong>of</strong> Argenta, the University’s resident chamber group,<br />

and tours regularly with internationally acclaimed New York<br />

based violinist Rolf Schulte.<br />

Gwendolyn Clancy<br />

An independent filmmaker for 28 years, Gwendolyn Clancy<br />

tells the stories <strong>of</strong> those who live and work in the Great Basin<br />

through her videos and films, including “The Man they Call<br />

Will James,” narrated by actor Richard Farnsworth. Her talent<br />

at tapping into peoples’ lives has resulted in grants from the<br />

National Endowment for the <strong>Arts</strong>, <strong>Nevada</strong> Humanities and the<br />

Gund Foundation, and numerous awards from the American<br />

Film Festival and the National Cowboy Hall <strong>of</strong> Fame, to name<br />

a few. For the past decade, first as the public information<br />

<strong>of</strong>ficer for the <strong>Nevada</strong> <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Cultural</strong> Affairs and<br />

presently as an independent contractor, Clancy has hosted<br />

and produced a monthly documentary series, Exploring<br />

NEVADA ARTS COUNCIL<br />

The <strong>Nevada</strong> <strong>Arts</strong> <strong>Council</strong>, a division <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Nevada</strong> <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Cultural</strong> Affairs, was<br />

created as a state agency in 2007. With <strong>of</strong>fices in Carson City and Las Vegas, the <strong>Arts</strong><br />

<strong>Council</strong> mission is “to enrich the cultural life <strong>of</strong> the state through leadership that preserves,<br />

supports, strengthens and makes accessible excellence in the arts for all <strong>Nevada</strong>ns.” <strong>Nevada</strong><br />

<strong>Arts</strong> <strong>Council</strong> programs serve as catalysts to stimulate artistic and cultural activity, to provide<br />

education to both the general population and our leaders on the role <strong>of</strong> the arts in American<br />

The 29th Annual Governor’s <strong>Arts</strong> Awards is a program <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Nevada</strong> <strong>Arts</strong> <strong>Council</strong>, a<br />

division <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Cultural</strong> Affairs, and the Office <strong>of</strong> the Governor.<br />
