Thoughts of victims and rescues were fresh in <strong>the</strong>ir heads;<br />

Then suddenly, in <strong>the</strong> harbor, <strong>the</strong>re came such a sound,<br />

The coxswains and crews searched, but nothing could be found;<br />

When <strong>the</strong>re, at <strong>the</strong> horizon <strong>the</strong>re rose a great sight,<br />

With red and green lights, even a three sixty white;<br />

The roar of her engines were nothing to compare,<br />

Against <strong>the</strong> jolly laughter of <strong>the</strong> helmsman <strong>the</strong>re;<br />

The odd vessel approached us at juggernaught speed,<br />

And sped through a no-wake zone, which it did not heed;<br />

Boat crews, both Silver and Gold ran on to <strong>the</strong> pier,<br />

To see <strong>the</strong> strange craft as it drew ever so near;<br />

The Captain at <strong>the</strong> wheel wore red with white trim,<br />

A jolly face, white beard, and a belly, not thin!<br />

A fur coat, hat, gloves, and orange PFD,<br />

Completed this Sailor for everyone to see;<br />

He spoke to those present in a deep merry voice,<br />

I visited Coast Guard Station Quillayute at<br />

<strong>the</strong> LaPush Indian Reservation near Forks,<br />

Washington. The Station was right where <strong>the</strong><br />

death of <strong>the</strong> three ―Coasties‖ occurred two<br />

years ago in a helicopter accident. The helicopter<br />

came around to fly above a Coast<br />

Guard patrol boat that was coming out of <strong>the</strong><br />

Quillayute River to enter <strong>the</strong> Pacific Ocean<br />

when its blades struck a power line used to<br />

light <strong>the</strong> inlet area sending <strong>the</strong> helicopter<br />

crashing onto James Island. The OD Harris<br />

was one of <strong>the</strong> first on <strong>the</strong> scene.<br />

by <strong>the</strong> fact that six ―Coasties‖ have lost <strong>the</strong>ir lives<br />

from CG Station Quillayute in <strong>the</strong> past 12 years.<br />

The boats in <strong>the</strong> harbor were all trawlers and<br />

belonged to <strong>the</strong> Quillayute Indians. At least<br />

once, most Indians have needed to be rescued by<br />

<strong>the</strong> Coasties, who <strong>the</strong>refore <strong>the</strong>y have a great<br />

relationship with <strong>the</strong> Indians. Everyone here is a<br />

hunter and fisherman.<br />

There is also a large memorial for three<br />

Coasties who died when <strong>the</strong>ir 47 footer was<br />

rolled several times and three of <strong>the</strong> four<br />

aboard were killed. The 47 was heading out<br />

in rough wea<strong>the</strong>r to a sailboat in distress<br />

when was pushed and rolled over several<br />

times onto <strong>the</strong> rocks. The coast up here is<br />

filled with large "needles" like those sticking<br />

out at Big Sur. Also <strong>the</strong> larger islands dot <strong>the</strong><br />

upper US Coast.<br />

While at <strong>the</strong> Station in <strong>the</strong> Communications<br />

Room, a wea<strong>the</strong>r system containing 60 knot<br />

winds and <strong>the</strong> seas were measured at 30 feet<br />

and was rolling over <strong>the</strong> berm separating <strong>the</strong><br />

river and <strong>the</strong> ocean. Rivers are overflowing<br />

now and <strong>the</strong> news here shows <strong>the</strong> salmon<br />

flopping over <strong>the</strong> highways (thinking <strong>the</strong>y are<br />

going to spawning grounds). Many people<br />

were shown picking <strong>the</strong>m up off <strong>the</strong> road and<br />

throwing <strong>the</strong>m back into <strong>the</strong> river. The<br />

wea<strong>the</strong>r here is pouring, cold (42 degrees)<br />

and gusts to 50 mph. Overall it was most<br />

informative and when <strong>the</strong>re is a rescue,<br />

<strong>the</strong> crew must be on <strong>the</strong>ir "A" game as <strong>the</strong><br />

seas here are very dangerous. This is shown<br />

The Coast Guard Station at Neah Bay is <strong>the</strong><br />

most northwest point of <strong>the</strong> continental U.S, on<br />

an Indian Reservation of <strong>the</strong> Makah Indians. That<br />

base has 27 Coasties, and many have <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

dependents living on base. They have a 25 footer<br />

and 2 47's. There is a large Indian Marina next to<br />

it and most of <strong>the</strong> Makah Indian industry is<br />

fishing. The Coasties at Neah Bay also have a<br />

great working relationship with <strong>the</strong> Makah Tribe,<br />

most of whose boats have had to be towed in by<br />

<strong>the</strong> Coast Guard at one time or ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />

CHRISTMAS PARTY – LAKE COUNTY FLOTILLA 43<br />

On December 1, Lake County Flotilla 43 continued<br />

a long tradition of holding a <strong>Christmas</strong><br />

Party at <strong>the</strong> regular flotilla meeting. This<br />

included a pot luck dinner and an exchange of<br />

gifts in a most unusual way. Members and<br />

guests bring a wrapped present, under $15, and<br />

place it under <strong>the</strong> tree, no tags or identifying<br />

features. Then each person who brought a gift<br />

drew a number. Then each person, starting<br />

with Number 1, selected a gift, returned to his/<br />

her seat, and opened it for all to see. Number 2<br />

<strong>the</strong>n selected a gift, opened it, and could ei<strong>the</strong>r<br />

keep it, or trade with Number 1. It continued<br />

on with each succeeding number ei<strong>the</strong>r keeping<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir selection or ―stealing‖ one already<br />

opened. By <strong>the</strong> time we got to <strong>the</strong> end, some<br />

gifts have swapped hands several times. Since<br />

poor old Number 1 didn’t get a chance to swipe<br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r gift, <strong>the</strong> process was reversed so that<br />

Number 1 had <strong>the</strong> last choice.<br />

Leading off <strong>the</strong> evening was a short business<br />

meeting at which a new member, Guy Marsh<br />

was sworn in by Scott Smith, FC.<br />

An added feature was a boat gear swap, folks<br />

brought boat gear <strong>the</strong>y no longer needed or<br />

wanted, and o<strong>the</strong>r members got to pour<br />

through <strong>the</strong> stuff and take home what <strong>the</strong>y<br />

needed. Tony Kurth, VFC, brought <strong>the</strong><br />

inventory of uniform items that members have<br />

collected for those in need. These opportunities<br />

helped garage inventories, and filled our<br />

uniform deficiencies.<br />

Some awards were passed out, and a couple of<br />

potential members and <strong>the</strong>ir sons were<br />

introduced. The food was excellent. The<br />

sponsors of <strong>the</strong> evening, Carolyn Page and<br />

Barbara Dunn organized <strong>the</strong> pot luck so we<br />

didn’t end up with all desserts. Barbara made<br />

a PowerPoint slide show of flotilla pictures<br />

which were projected on a screen in <strong>the</strong> room.<br />

Fellowship was <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>me, and <strong>Christmas</strong><br />

casual was <strong>the</strong> uniform of <strong>the</strong> night. All had a<br />

great time and vowed to do it again next year.<br />

On December 10, 2011, Flotilla 9-10 from Cape Coral<br />

participated in <strong>the</strong> nationwide Wreaths Across<br />

America commemoration. The Coast Guard Cutter<br />

Marlin led a flotilla of vessels three miles into <strong>the</strong><br />

Gulf of Mexico and presented seven wreaths<br />

representing <strong>the</strong> seven branches of <strong>the</strong> service in<br />

honor of those who have died in present and past<br />

conflicts. There was a twenty one gun salute from<br />

<strong>the</strong> Cutter and bagpipes played during <strong>the</strong> moving<br />

ceremony.<br />

The guest of honor on <strong>the</strong> Cutter was a 90 year old<br />

U.S. Coast Guard woman from World War II.<br />

It is hoped that more vessels, as well as local city officials, will be involved next year. Anyone<br />

Tropical Blue Uniform<br />

This uniform may be worn instead of <strong>the</strong> Service Dress Blue uniform<br />

except for occasions where <strong>the</strong> civilian equivalent is coat and tie.<br />

Trousers - shall be <strong>the</strong> same as those prescribed for Service<br />

Dress Blue uniform.<br />

BELT - black web - silver buckle and tip - plain or Auxiliary<br />

emblem.<br />

SHIRT - light blue short sleeve - stand-up collar with stays<br />

and epaulets - collar worn open without a tie.<br />

SOCKS - black knitted or rib knit undecorated material.<br />

STOCKINGS - worn with dress shoes and shall be made of<br />

plain material, flesh-color, undecorated and seamless.<br />

SHOES - black, heels, smooth lea<strong>the</strong>r or syn<strong>the</strong>tic material -<br />

low cut, plain style, without decorations - no stitching or<br />

seams across <strong>the</strong> toe - heels no higher than 1‖ - sole edges,<br />

heels, and laces black.<br />

WOMEN’S DRESS SHOES - shall be black, plain pump style,<br />

made of smooth lea<strong>the</strong>r or syn<strong>the</strong>tic lea<strong>the</strong>r substitute<br />

without decoration and with closed heels and toes. Heel<br />

heights may range from 1 to 2 5/8 inches. Heel widths may<br />

be no less than 1/2 inch at <strong>the</strong> floor.<br />
