Twas the Night Before Christmas
Twas the night before Christmas, all across the Seas,
Not a current was stirring, not even the breeze;
The patrol boats were moored to the docks with great care,
In case of a winter storm that could soon be there;
Auxiliary sailors and seamen lay snug in their beds,
Thoughts of victims and rescues were fresh in their heads;
Then suddenly, in the harbor, there came such a sound,
The coxswains and crews searched, but nothing could be found;
When there, at the horizon there rose a great sight,
With red and green lights, even a three sixty white;
The roar of her engines were nothing to compare,
Against the jolly laughter of the helmsman there;
The odd vessel approached us at juggernaught speed,
And sped through a no-wake zone, which it did not heed;
Boat crews, both Silver and Gold ran on to the pier,
To see the strange craft as it drew ever so near;
The Captain at the wheel wore red with white trim,
A jolly face, white beard, and a belly, not thin!
A fur coat, hat, gloves, and orange PFD,
Completed this Sailor for everyone to see;
He spoke to those present in a deep merry voice,
―You serve others, and this is a wonderful choice,‖
For you all have responded to your brothers’ call,
You rush out to save them during tempest and squall;
(US Coast Guard Auxiliary Version)
By Alan J.P. Miles, FC, 07-012-8
―It is time to deliver my message to you,
That you all should receive this Bravo Zulu;
It’s now time for me to get underway,
The time we were together, was special today,‖
He started the engines with a twitch of his nose,
―All Ahead Full‖, his orders crescendoed and rose;
As pulled from the dock, oh what a wonderful sight
He shouted, ―Merry Christmas to all and to all a Good Night !‖
I visited Coast Guard Station Quillayute at
the LaPush Indian Reservation near Forks,
Washington. The Station was right where the
death of the three ―Coasties‖ occurred two
years ago in a helicopter accident. The helicopter
came around to fly above a Coast
Guard patrol boat that was coming out of the
Quillayute River to enter the Pacific Ocean
when its blades struck a power line used to
light the inlet area sending the helicopter
crashing onto James Island. The OD Harris
was one of the first on the scene.
by the fact that six ―Coasties‖ have lost their lives
from CG Station Quillayute in the past 12 years.
The boats in the harbor were all trawlers and
belonged to the Quillayute Indians. At least
once, most Indians have needed to be rescued by
the Coasties, who therefore they have a great
relationship with the Indians. Everyone here is a
hunter and fisherman.
There is also a large memorial for three
Coasties who died when their 47 footer was
rolled several times and three of the four
aboard were killed. The 47 was heading out
in rough weather to a sailboat in distress
when was pushed and rolled over several
times onto the rocks. The coast up here is
filled with large "needles" like those sticking
out at Big Sur. Also the larger islands dot the
upper US Coast.
While at the Station in the Communications
Room, a weather system containing 60 knot
winds and the seas were measured at 30 feet
and was rolling over the berm separating the
river and the ocean. Rivers are overflowing
now and the news here shows the salmon
flopping over the highways (thinking they are
going to spawning grounds). Many people
were shown picking them up off the road and
throwing them back into the river. The
weather here is pouring, cold (42 degrees)
and gusts to 50 mph. Overall it was most
informative and when there is a rescue,
the crew must be on their "A" game as the
seas here are very dangerous. This is shown
The Coast Guard Station at Neah Bay is the
most northwest point of the continental U.S, on
an Indian Reservation of the Makah Indians. That
base has 27 Coasties, and many have their
dependents living on base. They have a 25 footer
and 2 47's. There is a large Indian Marina next to
it and most of the Makah Indian industry is
fishing. The Coasties at Neah Bay also have a
great working relationship with the Makah Tribe,
most of whose boats have had to be towed in by
the Coast Guard at one time or another
CHRISTMAS PARTY – LAKE COUNTY FLOTILLA 43
Submitted by Bill Griswold, SO-HR Division 4
Photos by Barbara Dunn, FSO-PA, Flotilla 43
On December 1, Lake County Flotilla 43 continued
a long tradition of holding a Christmas
Party at the regular flotilla meeting. This
included a pot luck dinner and an exchange of
gifts in a most unusual way. Members and
guests bring a wrapped present, under $15, and
place it under the tree, no tags or identifying
features. Then each person who brought a gift
drew a number. Then each person, starting
with Number 1, selected a gift, returned to his/
her seat, and opened it for all to see. Number 2
then selected a gift, opened it, and could either
keep it, or trade with Number 1. It continued
on with each succeeding number either keeping
their selection or ―stealing‖ one already
opened. By the time we got to the end, some
gifts have swapped hands several times. Since
poor old Number 1 didn’t get a chance to swipe
another gift, the process was reversed so that
Number 1 had the last choice.
Leading off the evening was a short business
meeting at which a new member, Guy Marsh
was sworn in by Scott Smith, FC.
An added feature was a boat gear swap, folks
brought boat gear they no longer needed or
wanted, and other members got to pour
through the stuff and take home what they
needed. Tony Kurth, VFC, brought the
inventory of uniform items that members have
collected for those in need. These opportunities
helped garage inventories, and filled our
uniform deficiencies.
Some awards were passed out, and a couple of
potential members and their sons were
introduced. The food was excellent. The
sponsors of the evening, Carolyn Page and
Barbara Dunn organized the pot luck so we
didn’t end up with all desserts. Barbara made
a PowerPoint slide show of flotilla pictures
which were projected on a screen in the room.
Fellowship was the theme, and Christmas
casual was the uniform of the night. All had a
great time and vowed to do it again next year.
On December 10, 2011, Flotilla 9-10 from Cape Coral
participated in the nationwide Wreaths Across
America commemoration. The Coast Guard Cutter
Marlin led a flotilla of vessels three miles into the
Gulf of Mexico and presented seven wreaths
representing the seven branches of the service in
honor of those who have died in present and past
conflicts. There was a twenty one gun salute from
the Cutter and bagpipes played during the moving
ceremony.
The guest of honor on the Cutter was a 90 year old
U.S. Coast Guard woman from World War II.
It is hoped that more vessels, as well as local city officials, will be involved next year. Anyone
interested should go to www.wreathsacrossamerica.org for more information
