Technical Data
Material
Keystone Lintels are manufactured from high quality grade galvanised steel to BS EN
10346:2009 DX51D plus Z600 or Z275 with minimised spangle finish. In accordance with
BS5977: part 2, 1983 (BS EN 845-2:2003) all cut edges are treated with corrosion resistant
paint.
Insulation
The Keystone Lintel core is entirely filled with ‘CFC free’ insulation, which completely fills
all voids in the lintel, particularly at the apex ensuring continuity with wall insulation and
reducing cold bridge effect in this area. This ensures that the Keystone Lintel range is one
of the most thermally efficient lintels available with a thermal conductivity of 0.033 W/mk.
Performance
Keystone Lintels are manufactured to the highest quality and are continually assessed by the
BSI to ensure our quality assurance systems comply with BS EN ISO 9001: 2008. The ‘Keystone
People’ are also a highly trained and motivated workforce. Our manufacturing premises have
been approved as a N.V.Q. Training Centre and the company has also received the Investors In
People Accreditation.
Keystone is committed to the continuous development of our Environmental Management
Systems, working in partnership with our specifiers, customers and suppliers. Keystone Lintels
Ltd are the first steel lintel manufacturer to be awarded BS EN ISO 14001:2004.
The Keystone Lintel range have safe working loads shown in each applicable loading table,
taking into account the differential loading arrangements which are common to traditional
cavity wall construction.
Differential Load 3:1 ratio, 75% load on inner leaf.
Differential Load 19:1 ratio, 95% load on inner leaf.
Lintel Types HD/K, S/K-50 (215WIL), S/K-70 (215WIL), SK-90 (215WIL), S/K-110, S/K-130, S/K-150,
SB/K, T/K, SL/K, RB/K, TJ/K, TW/K, INT/K, SW/K, IB/K, EL/K-50, EL/K-90, CFS/K, X/K have been tested
as a composite unit with surrounding masonry, built in accordance with BS5628-3:2005. These
composite units have been tested in accordance with the requirements of BS5977: part 2 1983
(BS EN 845-2:2003).
Testing
BBA – Extensive testing has been carried out on the Keystone range of lintels. The lintel testing
procedure and Agrément Board assessment is carried out under the direct supervision of
the University of Ulster.
Fire Test – The Keystone S/K lintel range has been subjected to fire tests at the Warrington Fire
Research Station and has achieved a one hour fire certificate by successfully supporting their
imposed load for 48 hours after the tests.
Durability – The service life of lintels shall be the same as that anticipated for the building
within which they are used, when used in conjunction with a flexible D.P.C. and where the
normal humidity and condensation levels of a habitable building exist. The Keystone Lintel
range complies with the technical requirements of the Housing Association Property Mutual
Technical Data
Installation
Lintels should be installed with a minimum end bearing of 150mm bedded in mortar,
levelled along its length and across its width. With cavity walls, both leaves should be raised
together to avoid excessive eccentricity of loading and be allowed to cure before applying
floor or roof loads. Blockwork is permitted to overhang the lintel flange by a maximum of
25mm. Point loads and concrete floor units should not be applied without prior consultation
with our Technical Department or a Structural Engineer.
Care should also be exercised in the selection of lintels for each application with regard
to wall construction, cavity width and loads applied.
COSHH – All components and materials in our products are considered as non-hazardous to
health under normal conditions of use as determined by COSHH Regulations 1994.
Due care should be taken when lifting and handling lintels with regard to weights. A table
of weights for individual lintel types is available on request. For further information contact
our Technical Department.
A cavity tray should be installed over all openings in external cavity walls.
Cavity Trays
Gable Abutment System
When a stepped or staggered gable abutment
is formed the status of the external skin below
the roof line changes to that of an internal
skin. Accordingly, every gable abutment must
be constructed so as to prevent dampness and
rainwater from penetrating below the abutting
roof line.
The Keystone gable abutment cavity tray forms
a stepped cavity dpc which is incorporated into
the building during bricklaying. The completed
structure is ready to receive roof lead flashing
in the conventional way.
The Keystone Cavity Tray - Type GA
Manufactured from polypropylene, the
Keystone gable abutment cavity tray is
available in three sizes to suit all roof pitches
up to 60°. It is suitable for use in all brick, block
and timber-framed constructions, the large
bridging piece catering for cavity widths from
50mm to 100mm.
Supplied flat, the pre-creased trays allow for
easy on-site folding to the required shape -
catchment, left and right hand or ridge tray. A
locating lip facilitates the accurate placement
of trays during bricklaying.
Calculating Quantities
The single-element system makes the
calculation of quantities very simple. Whether
you are building with bricks or blocks the rule
is the same: you require one cavity tray per
course per slope. On a double slope roof this
calculation will give you an extra tray that can
be used to lengthen the ridge tray if required.

The Keystone gable abutment cavity tray is
available in three sizes. Trays are supplied in
shrink-wrapped flat packs in the quantities
indicated or as single items.

Blockwork 25º-40º
Note: All packs contain full installation instructions and
folding instructions are printed on each tray
Internal / External Corners
Flat-packed foldable corners complete the
Keystone gable abutment cavity tray system.
Both internal (GAIC) and external (GAEC)
corner trays comprise factory-jointed twopiece
assemblies that are folded on site to form
right-angled corners. The trays are pre-creased
and incorporate adjustment for 50mm, 75mm
or 100mm cavity widths and incorporate
mastic sealant strips for overlapping areas.
Refurbishment System
The Keystone refurbishment cavity trays
system has been specifically developed to
facilitate both the insertion of a new tray into
an existing wall and the repair or alteration of
an existing damp proof course.
Where to Use
Where a new lean-to extension meets an
existing building, the original external wall
becomes an internal partition below the roof
line and must be protected from dampness and
the penetration of rainwater. Similarly, when a
flat roof is resurfaced with added insulation,
or is reconstructed as an inverted roof with
top paving, the roof level may be raised and
thus require the skirting and its corresponding
damp proof course to be lifted.
In addition, existing cavity trays which have
been poorly constructed or have rotted allowing
water to leak through must be replaced.

Available off-the-shelf in flat-packs, the
Keystone refurbishment tray combines ease
of handling, transportation and use with
complete effectiveness. It meets all current
building regulations and NHBC requirements.
Manufactured from polypropylene, the
Keystone refurbishment tray is 620mm wide by
280mm deep and is suitable for use in all brick,
block and timber-framed constructions. The
large bridging piece caters for cavity widths
from 50mm to 100mm.
Supplied flat, the pre-creased trays allow for
easy on-site folding to the required shape
including forming left and right hand end stops.
A locating lip facilitates accurate placement
during installation and the mastic sealant strip
(protected by release paper) ensures easy and
watertight overlap jointing.
Keystone Sun Lounge Lintel
Did you know?
It is universally recognised amongst home owners and house builders that a Sun Lounge
is a more practical, user friendly room than a conservatory. Furthermore it is agreed
that a Sun Lounge floor area can be included in the overall measurement of your house
size, adding much more value to your home.
A Sun Lounge Lintel is an easy way to add space at low cost when building a new house, or extending a property. An
extra room rather than an add-on, a Sun Lounge is comfortable all year round while allowing you to watch the seasons
come and go in comfort.
What does a Sun Lounge offer you?
A Sun Lounge will blend with the existing appearance of your home. It’s easy to construct, using materials similar to your
house. Also it adds genuine floor space, it is structurally sound and adds value immediately.
Is the Sun Lounge the same as a conservatory?
No! A Sun Lounge is more competitively priced than a conservatory, is more visually appealing, is easier to clean, and is
not a bolt on “extra”.
Much better heat retention in winter
Protection from the blazing summer sun
Noise reduction associated with rainfall on a conservatory roof
What do Keystone offer?
The construction of a Sun Lounge has been simplified by the introduction of an Keystone Lintel. It is a one piece unit
which removes the need for local engineering, allows architects to design the Sun Lounge to suit the property, and will
keep the cost sensible.
The Keystone Sun Lounge Lintel is designed and delivered ready for erection.
Brick Arch Sets
Keystone provide a variety of special lintels
and ‘brickwork support systems’. A new
addition to the range is Keystone ‘Brick
Arch Sets’, where the brick-slips are tapered
onto a pre-furbished lintel.
Keystone offer a ‘brick matching’ service
where the complete brick arch set is
designed and customised to your specific
needs. Pre-formed, factory-finished steel
lintels by Keystone are cost-effective and
less time-consuming on-site.
Windposts
Windpost Design
Keystone Windposts are manufactured from grade 304 stainless steel (grade 316 is available
if required). The Keystone Technical Team will provide full product specification and
schedules.
All three Windpost designs are available in shorter lengths to provide the same level of
stability to parapets or below windows, commonly termed Parapet or Spandrel Posts
respectively. These posts are designed as cantilevers.
Keystone Windpost Systems
Keystone Windposts span vertically between
floors to provide additional lateral support
for large panels of brickwork or large panels
with openings. It is often difficult to provide
suitable justification that masonry walls have
lateral stiffness and therefore construction
would traditionally be strengthened by the
addition of thicker walls or by including
columns, to effectively shorten the span of the
masonry panel.
U type windpost
for cavity installation
DU type windpost
for cavity installation
LP type windpost for
installation into the inner
leaf of the blockwork
Keystone manufacture three types of windpost.
The U Windpost is installed within the
cavity and will normally span between floor
structures, with the same principle applying
to the DU Windpost. Both designs leave the
inner leaf of the cavity wall undisturbed. The
LP Windpost is designed to be built into the
inner skin of the cavity wall and normally
span between floor structures.
A range of
top and base
connectors can be
designed to suit
specific project
requirements.
All Keystone Windposts are supplied with specifically designed base and upper connections
and fixings. They are also supplied with a suitable number of wall-ties which will vary in
relation to the post type used and the cavity width. There are five types:
U Tie – For use with U & DU Windposts.
L50 Tie – For use with LP Windposts (50mm cavity).
L75 Tie – For use with LP Windposts (75mm cavity).
L100 Tie – For use with LP Windposts (100mm cavity).
L Shear Tie – For use with LP Windposts.
L Shear Tie can be supplied with a de-bonding sleeve if the windpost is positioned at a vertical
movement joint.
