New Vision Centres
Two new Vision Centres (VC) at Bhattiprolu and
Amruthaluru in Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh were
inaugurated on March 9, 2012. This takes our total
number of VCs to 88. Also with this 12 VCs have now
been established out of the proposed 30 to be set up
with support from LDS Charities, USA. The new VCs are
linked to our secondary care centre at Gudavalli for
referral services.
Together, the two VCs
will cater to a population
of 35,000, providing free
eye screening services to
the neighbouring villages.

support for the Amruthalaru VC came from the
Krothapally brothers, NRI Dr Anjaneyulu and Mr
Ravindra Babu, who donated their ancestral property for
it. Dr Anjaneyulu committed to pay the Vision
Technician's salary for five years and also pledged a

The EMR (Electronic Medical Records) system was
implemented at 4 more Vision Centres (VC) — Tallada,
Dammapeta, Illandu and Charla, bringing the total VCs
on EMR to 5, all connected to our secondary care Nava
Bharat Eye Centre at Paloncha.

Cornea Unplugged: The Way Forward
The CME 'Cornea Unplugged: The Way Forward' (March 3-4, 2012) was aimed at
reviewing developments in the field of cornea and external eye diseases and eye
banking. International and national stalwarts from around the globe graced the meeting.
The auditorium was packed with 290 delegates from various institutions, including
LVPEI alumni who were present in full strength.

The symposium was complemented by a 'Skills
Transfer Course' on March 2, 2012 with hands-on
training sessions on DALK, DSEK and
keratoprosthesis techniques. The delegates
appreciated the program and the learning, rating it
very high for its practical exposure.

free screening program for women from

Glaucoma Awareness Week
The LVPEI network commemorated Glaucoma Awareness Week (March 11 to 17, 2012) by
organizing several programs at its various campuses.
Kallam Anji Reddy campus: A Glaucoma Awareness Walk was organised on March 10, 2012 to
create public awareness about glaucoma, an irreversible blinding disease. The large contingent
included LVPEI faculty and staff, members of the Telugu film industry and the general public. The
event was widely publicized in the print and electronic media.
A Biostatistics Workshop and Glaucoma Masters' Course (GLAUCOMA, the KNOWN and the UNKNOWN) was conducted on March 11, 2012 for
postgraduate students, practicing ophthalmologists and glaucoma specialists. It was attended by over 175 people at KAR campus, as well as many more
at Bhubaneswar, Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada campuses, via live videoconferencing. Besides strengthening the basic concepts, it focused on current
trends in the diagnosis and management of glaucoma, including challenging clinical scenarios, treatment failures and rehabilitation of glaucoma patients.

GMR Varalakshmi campus: The Glaucoma walk at Ramakrishna Beach early on March 10 was flagged off by
DIG Smt Soumya Mishra, with Dr Merle Fernandes, director and Dr PVKS Varma, Head, Glaucoma Services leading
the program. Dr Krishna Prasad, Superintendent, Regional Eye Hospital, and staff, trainees, supporters and

community elders also participated. The program was covered widely in the press. On March 11 postgraduate
students from Rangaraya Medical College (Kakinada), Regional Eye Hospital
(Visakhapatnam), MIMS (Vizianagaram) and consultants from other hospitals
attended the Masters' Course at Hyderabad campus via videoconferencing.
Kode Venkatadri Chowdary campus: The Vijayawada campus organised several activities including: free glaucoma
screening at the campus and City Centre (March 12-17); a Glaucoma Walk with about 100 participants, including staff
and Vasavya and RG Foundation; a talk on Radio Mirchi and a live interview on Siti channel by Dr Pradeep Kumar
Reddy; and a Public Forum, in which the audience clarified their doubts.
Bhubaneswar campus: Information brochures and pamphlets on glaucoma and its management were distributed to patients and attendants.

Dr Sanghamitra Dash participated in a Doordarshan program “Hello Doctor” on March 12 and answered questions by callers. On 17 a Public Forum
was attended by over 60 patients and families. Dr Aparna Rao spoke about the disease and clarified the participants' doubts.

Sub: Thanksgiving to Dr G Chandra Sekhar
I was on a visit to Hyderabad in January this year
and was very fortunate that I had the privilege
of being examined by Dr Chandra Sekhar who
gave a lot of time and the fullest attention to me,
despite his heavy schedule. It was a very
satisfying experience. Even his team is
dedicated and thorough in their work. As I am a
resident of Delhi I requested for the medical
reports, which were sent to me very promptly.
The reports were seen by my Delhi specialist
who put me on treatment, as advised by Dr
Chandra Sekhar. I was very impressed with the
functioning of this great eye Institute, headed by
such a reputed doctor like Dr Chandra Sekhar.
