Occupational health and safety
The City has taken a proactive approach to occupational health and safety,
particularly given the significant hazards faced by some sections of our
workforce. In 2008-09 there was a higher rate of workers’ compensation
claims than the industry average. However, through effective return to work
strategies the City was able to reduce lost time to a rate lower than the
industry average.
Public relations
The City’s Public Relations
service continued to provide the
organisation with a professional
media liaison service. During the
year, over 100 media releases
were issued and in excess of 300
written media statements prepared
in response to inquiries from local
and State media. In addition to the
media liaison service, the weekly
Mayor’s Column appeared in the
Eastern Reporter and Guardian
Express community newspapers.
Keeping our residents informed
about the initiatives, programs and
policies of the City of Bayswater
remained a high priority for Council
during 2008-09. During the course
of the year, three Bayswater Brief
civic newspapers were prepared
and distributed to residents. This
broadsheet newspaper-style
publication featured articles on
Council initiatives and programs and
in addition, provided useful regular
features such as contact details and
an events diary.
