Gobba Lake, Bayswater Sustainable environment The City places a high priority on the conservation and protection of our bushlands, wetlands and the Swan River. During 2008-09 environmental restoration works were undertaken at: • Gobba Lake; • Baigup Wetland; • Eric Singleton Bird Sanctuary; • Lightning Park environmental area; • Berringa Reserve; • Riverside Gardens; • Hinds Reserve; and • Bayswater Brook streams and wetlands. The City also took part in other environmental protection programs, including: programs to reduce carbon emissions; reduce the City’s draw on scheme water; and monitor water quality. Tranby foreshore The City completed the first section of river restoration at Tranby foreshore this financial year, using a technique that involved placing rocks on key sections of the riverbank, with an underlay of textile material to stop sand erosion. Native vegetation was also planted along the bank to further prevent erosion and add to the ecological integrity of the river. Perth biodiversity project The City developed a collective biodiversity strategy in partnership with the Town of Bassendean and City of Belmont. It aims to conserve and protect the biodiversity of plants and animals in local bush and wetlands. Bush lands are linked through ecological corridors, and the management of one area of bush land can affect surrounding areas. Through the biodiversity strategy, the City proposes to enhance corridors for fauna and flora, helping to maintain healthy and genetically diverse populations. In 2008-09 the City’s work was recognised by the Swan Catchment Centre. Schools’ river education day In March 2009, the City of Bayswater and the Swan River Trust held the Bayswater Catchment Activity Day at Riverside Gardens, opened by the Minister for the Environment, Hon. Donna Faragher MLC. Over two days, five schools attended with 240 students from years 4 to 7. The students were engaged in fun activities to learn about the river and water catchment issues in the City. 18 city of bayswater annual report 2008-09

Parks and gardens The City of Bayswater is renowned for its well maintained parks, gardens and street trees, consistent with its Garden City theme. Gibbney Park surface reconstruction Major projects in the 2008-09 financial year included the heavy compaction, reconstruction and levelling of the sports playing fields of Gibbney Reserve, Maylands, which used to be a rubbish tip. The surface of the reserve had become very uneven and this was affecting the use of the park. Works were undertaken to slow the subsidence of the oval surfaces caused by the decay of refuse under the ground. The sports playing surface is now significantly improved, allowing greater use of the facility. Bore and pump replacement program Irrigation systems at Shearn Park, Mt Lawley and Joan Rycroft Reserve, Bayswater, were replaced with new, more reliable systems. In addition, ageing bores were replaced at Halliday Park, Joan Rycroft Reserve, Frank Drago Reserve, Bert Wright Park, Chesney Reserve and Charles Reserve, to significantly improve the efficiency of water use as well as reliability of the systems. Centralised irrigation system upgrade This year, the City continued with its program of bore and pump maintenance to maximise their efficiency. The City’s centralised irrigation has been upgraded so that water running times can be controlled from a single computer based at the Paddy Walker Works Depot in Bayswater. This system is supported by “in turf” moisture monitoring sensors which allow the City to minimise water use. Landscape refurbishment Trees and shrubs were planted in the newly constructed median islands on Guildford Road, Maylands. The landscape treatment on the median island at the intersection of Dakota Avenue and Tranby Road in Maylands was refurbished, along with the roundabout at the intersection of Peninsula Road and East Street, Maylands. This year the City continued planting annual garden beds on high profile roundabouts throughout the municipality with particularly attractive displays on the roundabouts at the intersections of McGilvray Avenue and Benara Road, Collier Road and Marchant Way, Morley.
