Engineering
The Engineering Section continued to improve the City’s amenity and infrastructure in
2008-09. More than $1.8 million was spent on road works, while a further $1.78 million
was invested in operational maintenance for engineering works including street lighting,
street sweeping, bus shelters, graffiti cleaning, signs, roads, drains, paths and kerbing.
Construction
The 2008-09 highlight was the
construction of the Principal Shared
Path leading from the Bayswater
Train Station to the Tonkin Highway.
The City of Bayswater undertook
the project on behalf of the
Department of Planning to speed
up the provision of an important
community facility. The City was
recognised for its successful
delivery of the project in a timely
way, and at a fraction of the cost
quoted by private contractors.
Road and footpath
improvements
The City has continued to replace
its network of slab footpaths with
concrete, in order to improve
amenity, eliminate trip hazards and
reduce maintenance costs.
In 2008-09, the City purchased a
new road sweeper to improve the
sweeping of arterial roads, ensuring
that safety conditions are met for all
road users.
The City resurfaced 12 kilometres of
roads in 2008-09 to ensure the road
network remained at the highest
standard for motorists and cyclists.
Roads resurfaced included:
• Slade Street, Bayswater;
• Wall Street, Maylands;
• Murray Street, Bayswater;
• Rowlands Street, Maylands;
• Bramwell Street, Noranda;
• Barnard Place, Noranda; and
• Turon Street, Morley.
This financial year also saw the
commencement of the four year
program of upgrading all street
signs in the City to the new reflective
standard. The signs will be clearer
during the day and at night.
Traffic management
A number of traffic management
projects were undertaken to improve
safety. These included works in:
• Whatley Crescent;
• Railway Parade/Beechboro
Road; and
• Wall Street.
