Glass Coatings
Attraction of coated glass
Coated Glass has ever attracted mankind’s interest similar to
glass itself. Due to its durability and lustrous appearance it
has always been treated as a treasure of the rich and mighty.
A secret on its own
Glass making has been a secret for a long time. A status which
eventually changed during the 1950s with the introduction of
float glass mass production which was equally a milestone for
large area application of float glass in manifold architectural
applications.
Since these times coating technology has been developed
not only adding freedom of design but also adding
functionality to glass.
Today’s coatings provide extensive protection against sun
radiation and minimize energy losses through large area
glass surfaces - thus providing a significant contribution
towards energy conservation and our kid’s future.
At the same time they can serve manifold
aesthetic requirements.
Today’s coating technology is truly applied nanotechnology
for the sake of the preservation of our environment
and future life.

Leybold Optics – a scent of tradition
History / Milestones - Dealing with the potentials of vacuum technology for 150 years
Ernst Leybold and Wilhelm Carl Heraeus laid the foundations for our present day
success. Very early these two inventors dealt with the potentials of vacuum
technology. In 1967 the companies of Leybold and Heraeus merged to form the
predecessor of today‘s Leybold Optics GmbH.
Ernst Leybold - from trader to industrialist
A haulage contractor, a coffee importer, a wholesaler dealer in chemist‘s supplies:
Ernst Leybold from Cologne was a real multi-talent. In 1864 he opened his own
company selling physical and pharmaceutical devices. Six years later he sold his
associates the core of the company that is well-known all over the world today.
Wilhelm C. Heraeus - it all started in a chemist‘s shop
Heraeus had personal experience with pharmaceutics. In 1851 he took over his
father‘s chemist‘s shop in Hanau. A few years later he was already working on the
production and processing of precious metals.

Glass Coatings – Applied science
Coating technology
The glass coating platform Apollon was designed to accommodate
the latest deposition technology. Due to its performance, ease of
operation and similarly reliability sputter deposition is the
standard technology for coating large areas with high repeatability
and ultimate precision. For sputter deposition a low pressure, high
voltage discharge in an Argon atmosphere is generated and
the ionized Argon atoms are accelerated towards a target of the
material which is to be deposited onto the glass substrate. Like a
golf ball hitting sand the material is dashed onto the glass substrate.
Coating performance
The coatings performance strongly depends on the different
materials and their combinations in a layer stack.
• Absorbing layers e.g. TiN, CrN,…
• Reflective layers e.g. NiCr, Cr, Ti, Nb,…
• Dielectric layers e.g. ZnO, TiO2
, Si3N4 , SnO2 ,…
• IR-reflecting layers e.g. Ag, Au, Al,…
The higher the layer stack complexity the bigger the demand
for higher uniformities of the individual layers. Leybold Optics
is a profound partner with its knowledge base and
collaborations with well known universities and research
institutes for the development and implementation of
sophisticated layer stack designs.

Apollon
A versatile platform
The glass coating platform Apollon was designed to meet the latest requirements for
sputtered architectural coatings. Due to its flexible design and versatile technology it can
serve almost any demand with regard to productivity, glass sizes, cycle times or
products.
Advanced technology
The system itself consists of an entry and exit load lock part and a process section.
Whereas the load lock sections are responsible for pressure adoption from atmosphere
to high vacuum, and vice versa, the process section consists of a multitude and
customized number of multipurpose compartments. These compartments are all
identical with a width of 850 mm and thus provide a maximum flexibility for the process
configuration. Pairing latest gas flow simulation technology and a long experience in
glass coating the optimum compartment width for high plasma stability, high
accessibility for ease of maintenance and excellent gas separation for truly high end
products was selected.
Each compartment can accommodate turbo molecular pumps, gas separation slits, single
or double planar cathodes, rotary cathodes, additional tools and so on and on. It is your
process and imagination paired with our knowledge that set the horizon for applications.
The peoples’ factor
Last but not least – machine performance does not solely determine productivity. Things
like ease of maintenance, power consumption, personal support and by Leybold Optics
or thorough training of our customers’ personnel makes the difference between good
machinery and a perfect system with outstanding overall performance.

Right from the beginning Leybold Optics has gathered an invaluable
treasure – experience. Experience and being always state-of-the-art
peaks in the latest technology in the field vacuum coating.
Being one of the first employing turbo-molecular pumps
with magnetic bearings and dry and oil-free screw pumps
we have – once again - set a milestone in vacuum performance.
Leadership in coating technology
Vacuum coating has ever been a core competence within
Leybold – thus our planar cathodes are still a cornerstone.
As we are used to provide the finest available technology
we have chosen the Nr. 1 in rotary cathode technology to
partner with.
Following their brand “Better together” this is an ideal
partnership for our customers’ avail. This unique
Sophisticated layer stacks
Leybold Lumina – Silver based low-e coatings. Silver layers embedded in dielectric layers
provide high light transmittance into the interior of buildings and very low heat losses.
This product range is the standard for residential building applications in cold and
moderate climate. Diligent tuning of the individual layer stack allows for tuning of
colour and performance.
Leybold Lumina Pro – Double silver coatings optimize shading properties jointly with
even higher energy conservation properties than standard low-e coatings.
Leybold Lumina Pro – a combination of solar control coatings like Leybold Chromos and
standard single silver low-e coatings such as Leybold Lumina. This type of coatings is
now a standard for ambitious architectural applications in all climates.
Leybold Chromos – Providing shading to the interior of buildings and attractive
appearance from the outside, a task for Leybold Chromos a solar control coating.
By reflecting and absorbing incoming sunlight and radiation the intake of sun energy
into the interior is effectively limited. Both – reflection and absorption – and the colour
can be tuned in a wide range to meet a multitude of aesthetic requirements.
Mostly Titanium, Stainless steel or Chromium layers, embedded in
dielectric layers are employed.
