Message from the Vice-Chancellor and President of
Simon Fraser University
I would like to welcome Fraser
International College (FIC) students to
one of Canada’s leading universities,
situated in one of the most beautiful and
vibrant cities in the world. Simon Fraser
University (SFU) opened its doors in
1965, challenging convention and striving
for innovation in higher education. Now,
four decades later, SFU has emerged as
a formidable academic presence with an
international reputation for innovative
teaching, research and community
outreach. This reputation is built on our
strengths in the liberal arts and sciences,
as well as our distinctive interdisciplinary
and professional programs, and our
commitment to the close integration of
leading-edge research and teaching.
Our record is one of embracing risk and
bold initiative; a record that is reflected
in the successful work of our faculty and
of our students. SFU faculty members
are recognized internationally and
our students excel in their fields after
graduation. We believe this record will
be enhanced by our association with FIC
and our connection with its students.
I am confident that students of FIC
will enjoy the benefits of learning and
living on SFU’s campuses. Our student
residences, student services, and
our recreation and athletics facilities
and programs provide a welcoming
community, making your transition to
FIC and to SFU an enjoyable experience.
It is my pleasure to invite you to
The FIC programs and approach
instructors on the main SFU campus,
ensure that our students have the
very best preparation for the demands
of higher education in Canada.
FIC students are treated like university
students and, with the added benefits of
smaller classes, students receive more
personalized attention in a dynamic and
supportive learning environment that
better equips them for life at university.
In choosing an FIC program, you will be
following thousands of other successful
Life on campus
FIC is located on SFU’s Burnaby campus in the thriving and
culturally diverse city of Burnaby, a 30-minute drive from
downtown Vancouver. The Burnaby campus is one of the most
awe-inspiring university settings on the continent, offering a
stunning panorama of mountains, cities, ocean and islands from
its location at the summit of 400-metre high Burnaby Mountain.
Designed by internationally acclaimed
architect Arthur Erickson, the campus
has everything one would expect of a
major university, yet on a scale that will
make you feel at home. The vast majority
of students pursue their studies on the
pedestrian-friendly campus, which houses
administrative and academic offices, the
main library, student services, on-campus
residences, and the new UniverCity
community of residences and shops.
For students wanting to live on campus,
SFU provides fully-catered single room
accommodation as well as an on-campus
hotel where visiting family members can
stay. Buses operate between the campus
and Greater Vancouver’s rapid transit
system at the foot of Burnaby Mountain on
a regular basis. Studying at FIC will give you
access to all of these facilities and more.
There are plenty of opportunities for
students to get immersed in their campus
life. The Simon Fraser Student Society
funds nearly 100 clubs catering to
endless interests. Numerous events such
as Terry Fox Day, Clubs Week and Gung
Haggis Fat Choy foster multicultural ties
and connect people from all walks of life.
SFU Clubs Week
This provides both FIC and SFU students
the opportunity to meet with members
of a wide array of clubs that exist at
the University. SFU Clubs Week runs
the second week of every term and
during this time, students can choose to
become members of the more than 100
SFU clubs. These include professional
as well as fun clubs, such as the
Association of Latin American Students,
Burnaby Mountain Toastmasters,
Chinese Culture Club, Engineers
Without Borders, Food Club, Games
Developers Club, International Business
Association and many, many more!
Sports Clubs
Joining a sports club is an excellent way to
meet new people, learn new skills, and enjoy
a sport or activity that interests you! They
are also a great way for student organizers to
gain valuable leadership, management and
organizational skills. There are many sports
clubs including Badminton, Cheerleading,
Cricket, Dodgeball, Field Hockey, Golf,
Ice Hockey, Kendo, Kung Fu, Lacrosse,
Rowing, Rugby, Ski/Snowboarding, Table
Tennis, Tennis, Triathlon, Ultimate Frisbee,
Volleyball and Waterpolo to name a few.
SFU Theatre
If you have an appreciation for art or
want to be entertained, The SFU School
for Contemporary Arts presents and
produces various events that make up
their Fall and Spring performance series.
FIC Movie Club and
FIC Book Club
Members meet once a month with FIC
instructors to connect and discuss a
movie of interest or literary piece.
ULIFE
The ULife initiative was created to
help students build the links between
academics and interests, build
relationships, and help students get the
most out of their university experience.
It increases the visibility of existing
events and initiatives; put simply, to
make SFU more fun! www.sfu.ca/ulife
Your English language preparation
If you do not meet the minimum English language requirements for
entry to your program at FIC, you may want to enrol in an intensive
English language course at SFU. The Preparation in Academic
Skills (PAS) and English Language & Culture (ELC) programs will
assist you in improving your English language proficiency prior to
starting at FIC.
Preparation in Academic
Skills (PAS)
Preparation in Academic Skills (PAS)
in English is a SFU program which
provides English language training for
universitybound international students
who have achieved an IELTS score of
4.5 (no band less than 4.0) or equivalent.
PAS English classes are held on the Burnaby
campus of SFU, so students can enjoy
the experience of studying English in
one of Canada’s top universities, with
full access to SFU facilities and FIC.
Off-campus ESL colleges
FIC staff can offer advice regarding other
specialist ESL colleges in Vancouver for
students without an English test score,
or with an IELTS of less than 4.5 at
the time of applying to FIC. These ESL
colleges allow students to improve their
English language skills through intensive
English programs. Most specialist ESL
colleges have monthly intake dates.
SFU English Language &
Culture Program (ELC)
The English Language and
Culture Program is an intensely
interactive learning experience
in a university setting.
The ELC program emphasizes the
importance of improving English skills
and understanding the culture in which
a language is used. Students will be
able to continue to learn independently
outside of the classroom, and gain the
confidence to use English in any setting.
The SFU ELC program offers a wide
range of English Language courses, from
beginners to advanced and is located on
the SFU Vancouver campus. Programs
can be taken over 4, 8 or 12 week
periods depending upon your English
language needs. FIC can arrange fulltime
English tuition at ELC if you need
to improve your English level prior to
beginning your academic study at FIC.
would be the first time that I was so far away from
home. Though it was a challenge it was worth it
because I made a lot of friends who motivated me
to work harder. To face my challenges I had the help
of instructors during office hours and the student
advisors whenever I needed help. So I would like to
thank all the FIC staff members for all their help during
this journey and to my fellow students I would like to
encourage you to continue working harder in order to
achieve your goals.”
Supporting you while you study
FIC is committed to helping students achieve their goals by providing many support services. As an
FIC student, you will have access to these services as well as the student services offered by SFU.
Study and learning support
At FIC, we understand that the transition
to university-level study can be
difficult. To assist you in developing the
study skills necessary to successfully
complete your program of study, FIC
offers a variety of different study
and learning support services.
Our Student Advisors, in conjunction
with SFU and various teaching staff,
run a number of support tutorials and
workshops throughout each term for
students to develop their study skills
in areas such as time management,
essay writing, course planning and
examination techniques. Certified peer
tutors are also available to assist you in
all courses offered at FIC. If you need
assistance with assignment drafting,
researching, and referencing we can
help. International students who need
extra help with their spoken and written
English skills will also find the free
English support tutorials offered each
term very helpful. We encourage you
to participate fully in these programs
and to contact the friendly staff at FIC
for advice and assistance as soon as
you are finding things a little difficult.
Personal support
A free and confidential advising service
is available to all FIC students. Things
often do not go the way we planned
or sometimes problems of a personal
nature arise. An advisor is available to
meet with you to discuss any problems
or concerns you may have while you
are at FIC. If anything is preventing you
from enjoying your academic, social
or personal life, then seeing the FIC
Advisor is often a very good start in
resolving these issues. FIC students
also have access to the excellent health
and counselling services of SFU.
The Integrated Learning Skills Course is
designed to provide students with the
learning skills required to be successful in
university studies in a Canadian learning
environment. The course offers students
a broad introduction to the skills involved
in acquiring information and in conveying
knowledge to others. This course is
required for all UTP Stage II students to
ensure a smooth transition to a Canadian
teaching/learning environment.
“I have experienced teaching at different
universities and have been teaching at
Fraser international College since 2008.
One of the reasons I enjoy teaching
at FIC is the small class size, which
allows me to work with many students
individually, establishing a better
understanding of the course material.
I am fortunate to work with a
very talented and dedicated staff
of instructors and advisors who
support students throughout the
term. Fraser International College
is unique to other post-secondary
institutions because of the resources
that are available for its students.
Many of my former students tell me about
how Fraser International College has
prepared them to excel in an academic
learning environment. I am very pleased
with the quality of the students, not only
in the classroom but in how they have
integrated into our college community.”
“I have been teaching philosophy at
Simon Fraser University since 2005 and
at FIC since September 2009. I have
been struck by the extent to which FIC is
a supportive and welcoming community.
I really appreciate FIC’s commitment
to supporting students – socially,
emotionally, and academically – as
they start life in Canada. I am also
impressed by the enthusiasm with
which the FIC students meet the
challenge of living in a new country.
I greatly enjoy being part of the FIC
community, and I am excited to help
prepare FIC students for their transition
to undergraduate studies at SFU.”
“I started teaching LING110, The
Wonder of Words, at FIC in May 2009.
Teaching small classes at FIC gives my
students huge advantages over my SFU
students because the FIC students are
able to clarify any concerns, and to
get answers to any questions that are
relevant for their success in my course.
The personalized learning environment
at FIC gives my students a great
opportunity to succeed in their later
studies and careers and to create
a very solid foundation in order to
transfer smoothly to SFU programs.”
“My name is Jin Shi and I’m an
international student from mainland
China. I studied in FIC from Sept 2008
until Aug 2009. I’m currently studying in
the second year of the Bachelor of Applied
Science - Computing Science program
at SFU. I graduated from FIC with GPA of
4.17 and received a scholarship from SFU.
I have a lot of feelings to share about FIC.
Firstly, FIC provides quality education and
advanced teaching conditions. All the FIC
instructors and professors possess the
instruction level of teaching in SFU. The
course content and the difficulty level of
exams are the same as the ones at SFU.
This is the reason why SFU completely
recognizes the credits provided by FIC.
FIC has the advantage that SFU does
not have, which is the small classes
with 25-35 students in one class. SFU
professors focus on teaching and leave
checking assignments and examination
papers to their teaching assistants. This
is different from FIC where professors
personally mark test papers and have
much more closer relationship with
students. FIC also provides many different
classes along with tutorial workshops.
In a word, if you are an international
student who is determined to study
in SFU, but could not realize the
dream immediately, FIC is absolutely
your most valuable choice.”
Bachelor of Business Administration
“Back in Russia, I was thinking about what
I would expect from my journey in another
country. Besides studying, one of the
things that popped out in my mind was
that I wanted meet people from different
cultures. Canada is a multinational
country where diversity is celebrated.
When my parents and I were choosing
a college for my future studies we
looked at the programs that were
offered at FIC, the instructors and
staff, its location and decided that
it would be great choice for me!
During my studies at FIC I met a lot of
incredible people. At FIC, instructors
were not just teachers; they were much
more for me. One of the things that I was
surprised with is that everyone at FIC from
staff to instructors cares about you. You
are not left alone; you can always get help
from professors and student coordinators.
FIC was one of my best experiences in
Canada. I met my friends there, I earned
a scholarship from both FIC and SFU
and I successfully transferred to SFU.
FIC gave me a path to SFU! I am very
grateful to everyone who is working
there and who helped me to get through
my first year in a foreign country.”
Rodrigo Rojas
“My experience at FIC had no
comparison! Small classes allowed me
to learn in a more efficient way. I got
to know my teachers and classmates
who come from all around the world.
English is my second language and
I had some troubles especially with
the written part, but FIC helped me
by providing workshops to improve
my oral skills, giving me the chance to
improve not only my written English
but my spoken English as well.
FIC not only allows students to prepare
for academic life in Canada but also to
face life’s challenges. All members of staff
were always willing to help us and answer
all the questions we have regarding
living in another country; and now, as
an FIC alumni, I’m glad I went through
the FIC program before going to SFU.
When I transferred to Simon Fraser
University, I was at the same level as
the Canadian students and I already
knew what kind of workload to expect
from school. If you have the chance
to come to FIC I recommend you to
come, you are not going to regret it!”
Life at the centre of it all, barbeque nights,
movie nights and “rez” challenges are just
some of the regular activities that make
residence fun! SFU students, staff and
volunteers are there to help make the most
of the residence experience – whether
it is sharing study tips, letting students
know where to find the best cup of coffee
or inviting you to join in a volleyball
game. For many students, residence life
is one of the most memorable aspects
of their undergraduate experience.
Navitas family bursary
Navitas offers financial support in the
form of family bursaries. The Navitas
family bursary applies where two or more
students from the same family study
at a Navitas institution. The first family
member can be studying at a Navitas
institution at the same time as other
family members or may have studied at
any Navitas institution previously. For the
purpose of this bursary, a family member
is defined as a brother, sister, mother,
father, son, daughter or stepchild.
The family bursary is granted to the
second and subsequent family members
who study at a Navitas institution. The
bursary is equivalent to 10 percent of the
tuition fee for the first eight courses of
study in the UTP Stage I and for the first
ten courses of study in the UTP Stage
II programs. It is credited to the eligible
student’s tuition fee account each term
(the amount being relevant to the number
of courses undertaken in that term).
Please note: For students attending FIC, the Navitas family bursary is not applicable to English language programs or any component of an English language program.
Navitas scholarships
Hello Everyone! The gratitude in being an FIC scholarship recipient is really
unexplainable. I greatly appreciate the aid that was honored to me. The kind of
support that the administration staff offered me during the application process
was truly applaudable. As an international student the reward was a dream
come true, making my Canadian studies comfortable for me. It not only reduced
the burden but also induces students (like me) to apply for scholarships.
So, friends its not just an FIC experience its also the opportunity to get a
university experience as we get full access to the Campus facilities of SFU, it’s
the icing on the cake.
The faculty and the whole setup is definitely comfortable and convenient
for international students. There is so much to learn once you interact and
communicate with students from different countries, cultures and societies.
Obviously it transforms students into mature individuals preparing them for
different phases and circumstances in ones lives.
Study Permit/TRV information
Prospective international students intending to study in Canada must obtain a Study Permit from a
Canadian Diplomatic Mission in their home country before beginning their journey to Canada. Depending
on your citizenship or where you live, you may need a temporary resident visa as well as a study permit.
FIC has local representatives in most
countries. These representatives are
able to offer you support and assistance
when applying to study in Canada. For
further information on representatives
in your area contact the Admissions
Department - admissions@fraseric.ca.
The main requirements for a
Study Permit application are:
• Letter of Offer from FIC
• Receipt showing payment
• Letter of Acceptance from FIC
• Medical check-up documentation
as required by CIC regulations
• Proof of financial support as
required by regulations
1. Check the application processing
times. This will give you an
idea of how long it will take to
process your application.
2. Obtain and print the
application package.
The package includes the application
guide and all the forms you need
to fill out. www.cic.gc.ca/english/
information/applications/student.asp
If you are from one of the designated
countries, a visa officer will process
your application for a temporary
resident visa at the same time. You
do not need a separate application.
3. Determine where you will submit
your application. You must submit
your application to the visa office
that is responsible for the country
or region where you live.
4. Collect the documents you need to
apply. You can find information on
fees and other local requirements
on the website of the visa office
serving your country or region.
5. Complete your application for
a study permit. Fill in the forms
carefully and completely.
• Type or print clearly, using black
ink. For languages that do not use
the Latin alphabet. i.e., Chinese,
Arabic, Cyrillic, Japanese, Hebrew,
etc., add appropriate characters.
• Answer all questions carefully,
completely and truthfully.
Incomplete application packages
will not be processed, and
will be returned to you.
6. Pay the correct processing fee.
There is a fee to apply for a study
permit. In many countries, the
processing fee can be paid in the
local currency. You should check
the website of the Canadian visa
office serving the country or
region where you live for additional
information on fees, including how
to pay them. The processing fee
will not be refunded, even if your
application is not accepted.
7. Check your application. Make sure
your application is complete and that
you include the necessary documents.
Use the document checklist that is
included in the application kit. Consult
the website of the Canadian visa
office serving the country or region
where you live to determine if you
need to fill out any additional forms or
provide any additional documents.
8. Submit the application form. Sign
and date the application form, and
be sure you include the receipt
for the processing fee. Submit the
application form to the Canadian
visa office that serves the country
or region where you live.
9. Supply additional information
or documents.
After the visa office receives your
application, it might request more
information or documents. These
may include the following:
• Medical information
In most cases, you will need a
medical examination. A visa officer
will send you instructions if you
need a medical examination.
This may add more than three
months to the processing
time of your application.
• Security information
If you want to study in Canada,
you and any family members who
come to Canada with you, and who
are 18 years of age and over, may
have to provide police certificates.
2. Study Permits are usually issued for the period of the program.
Students wishing to extend their Study Permit should first
consult FIC for assistance. Students must apply for a new Study
Permit before expiration of their current Study Permit.
3. FIC will provide mandatory twelve (12) months of medical
coverage upon arrival in Canada. At the end of the twelve
(12) months, students will have the option to extend the initial
coverage or apply for the BC Medical Services Plan.
Other conditions
1. The student is expected to attend all classes, undertake all
tests and examinations during a program, and abide by all
rules and regulations of FIC that are in force at any time.
2. The contract between the applicant and FIC is governed by
the laws of Canada and the Province of British Columbia.
3. FIC may, by written notice, vary the conditions of enrollment as
may be necessary to comply with any law, regulation or amendment
thereof, of Canada or the Province of British Columbia.
4. In the event of circumstances requiring urgent medical care and where
it is not possible to contact the parent/guardian, FIC is authorized as
a matter of urgency to seek and provide appropriate medical care.
5. International students must meet the minimum English language
requirements for entry to the program. Applicants must
provide recognized English assessment results and if the test
reveals insufficient English language skills, the student will
be required to enrol in one Academic English language course
in the first term of study, or to enrol in an intensive English
language program prior to the commencement of studies.
Deferral
Student can defer their program start date a maximum of two times.
Subsequent requests for deferral will result in the student needing to re-apply.
Deferral requests must be made in writing. If a student wishes to defer their
admission until a later term, FIC will hold the fees paid until commencement
without levying a penalty. If the student subsequently withdraws, the Fee
Refund Policy will apply as at the date FIC was advised in writing of their
withdrawal. FIC reserves the right to apply the Fee Refund Policy to the date
of the initial deferral. FIC reserves the right to not approve deferral requests.
Deferral after enrolment
Continuing students wishing to defer their program after enrollment
and within the first four (4) weeks of program commencement, will
have any fees paid transferred to the next semester. If the students
subsequently withdraws, the Fee Refund Policy applied from the date
FIC received advice regarding the leave of absence. If the student
applies for a leave of absence from the fifth week of the semester,
their place will be held but all tuition fees applicable to that absence
will only be approved for illness or compassionate reasons.
Students in their first term of study may not defer their program after
enrollment.
Fee Refund Policy
1. For the purposes of this Fee Refund Policy, term fees are defined
as one full-time term of study in any program at FIC.
2. If an applicant accepts a place offered by FIC and pays the fees,
a binding contract is created between the student and FIC.
3. Notification of cancellation or withdrawal from course(s), or withdrawal
or deferral from a program of study must be made in writing to FIC.
4. Students who dispute FIC’s decision regarding a refund, have access
to an independent grievance resolution process. This does not
circumscribe the student’s right to pursue other legal remedies or
take further action under Canada’s consumer protection laws.
5. In case of cancellation or withdrawal, the cancellation fee (and
administration charge if relevant) will be calculated as shown in the
table below.
6. In case of deferral, the fees will be retained by FIC until
recommencement of studies. If the student subsequently
withdraws, the Fee Refund Policy will apply as at the date FIC was
advised in writing of their withdrawal. FIC reserves the right to
apply the Fee Refund Policy to the date of the initial deferral.
7. Where a Study Permit renewal is rejected due to a breach in Study
Permit conditions, a student must withdraw from FIC and the
cancellation fee will be calculated as shown in the table below.
8. Students whose enrollment is terminated by FIC will not be entitled to
any refund of fees. Any fee refund is wholly at the discretion of FIC.
9. FIC reserves the right to withdraw a program or course(s) from offer
at its discretion. If a student is unable to enroll in a similar program
or course(s) at FIC and the enrollment is cancelled, all fees will be
refunded with the exception of a C$235 administration fee.
10. All refunds under this Fee Refund Policy will be paid within four
(4) weeks of receiving a written claim from the student.
11. Refunds are to be paid to the person who enters into the contract with
FIC, unless the person gives a written direction to FIC to pay
the refund to another person.
