“We are welcoming more than 

750 schools to the centre during our 

preview week and already have numerous 

bookings from March onwards.” 

The 50-acre site features an indoor 

activity and sports hall, classrooms 

for ICT, meeting rooms, a 

ropes park as well as performing 

arts facilities. 

The buildings have been named 

after local pits which Darren said 

was to help “educate young people 

about the history and significance 

of mining to the area.” 

Willmott Dixon was given the 

contract to regenerate the site, constructing 

new accommodation 

blocks and refurbishing existing 

buildings. 

Darren said that the project was 

on budget and added: “We are very 

pleased with progress given the 

tight programme established and 

the construction of the units over 

the winter period. 

“The complex nature of the existing 

buildings and the technologies 

used when the site was 

originally constructed has caused a 

few heads to be scratched but the 

team has overcome all obstacles. 

“To date, a mild winter has definitely 

been on our side, but hopefully 

I’m not speaking too soon.” 

He added: “The project is almost 

complete with the first units about

team.

A CHARITY has given hope to a puppy 

that was knocked down and left to die on a 

busy roundabout. 

The five-month-old Staffordshire bull terrier was 

lying in the path of oncoming vehicles on the roundabout 

off the Mexborough bypass when she was rescued 

by a kind-hearted driver. 

The driver took the injured pup to Netherlands 

Dog Rescue in Kilnhurst and volunteers immediately 

took her to the vets where they were told that she had 

broken her leg in two places. 

Not wanting to see the pup suffer any more, the 

charity agreed to pay for the treatment and worry 

about the bill later. 

Now, after two operations, a course of pain-killers 

and pins and a plate in her leg, the abandoned pup— 

which the charity has named Hope—is recovering 

with a foster carer. 

Amy Walker, a behaviourist at the charity, said: 

“She’s doing really, really well and starting to be a 

proper little puppy again. 

“She’s a lovely dog and is recovering well physically 

from the two operations but she still isn’t allowed to 

run around. 

“When I take her outside, she’s scared of traffic 

which is something that I will be helping her with 

over the coming weeks.” 

The Kilnhurst charity has now launched a fundraising 

campaign to help to pay for Hope’s treatment 

which currently stands at around £1,000 with further 

treatment still to come. 

Lynne Hopkinson, a volunteer at Netherlands Dog 

Rescue, said: “We could not turn our backs on this 

puppy, so we decided to tell the vets to go ahead and 

operate and we would appeal for donations to help 

with the vet bill. 

“We really need donations to help us as we just do 

not have this kind of money. 

“We have up to 18 dogs at any one time in our rescue 

and it costs us to keep them in kennels. 

“Our only sources of income are generated from 

our two charity shops in Mexborough and Hoyland 

Common, fund-raising events and adoption fees. 

“If the dog had been taken to the council pound, 

she would have been put down.” 

Staff at Garnett Dickinson Publishing at Manvers 

have raised around £200 for Hope (pictured above) 

and eight-year-old Cerys Ogley of Dryden Road, 

Mexborough, has pledged to do a sponsored walk to 

help the campaign. 

After hearing about Hope’s story, Cerys, who attends 

Doncaster Road School in Mexborough, decided 

to try and make a difference herself. 

She said: “I felt really upset when I heard about 

the puppy being run over and that she’d been left in 

the road. 

“When I found out that they needed some money 

to pay for the poorly puppy I thought about how I 

could help. 

“I’ve never done a sponsored walk before and I 

am a little bit nervous but I’m happy to be doing 

something.” 

Cerys will be joined by family and friends on the 

sponsored walk around Castle Hills off Doncaster 

Road, Mexborough, on March 17. 

Her mum Donna added: “I am really proud of 

her, she’s done it all off her own back.” 

Sponsorship forms for Cerys are available from

Once Hope has fully recovered she will be available 

for adoption.

Centre gets ready 

for opening day

As well as the activity facilities, the site—which 

has been vacant since 2004—will use wind and solar 

power, waste water harvesting and youngsters will 

have access to recycling and computer labs. 

When it first opens, there will be 46 staff members 

on site, half of which have been recruited from the 

area. 

Further jobs will be created as the year goes on 

and Kingswood will also be recruiting apprentices 

for the Dearne Valley site. 

Dearne and Don Valley schools have been offered 

discounts and teachers have been invited to a preview 

event from February 27 to March 3, ahead of 

the first official visitors. 

An opening ceremony is being planned for May 

but for now, contractors are putting the final touches 

to the project. 

Darren said: “The remaining elements include the 

branding of the site and the landscaping works 

throughout the centre. 

“At this stage the decorators are finishing off all 

the units and then we have the small task of cleaning 

all the areas.” 

And the head of property said that they hoped to 

attract people from across the country. 

“Our main aim is to develop Dearne Valley to become 

one of the leading outdoor education centres 

in the UK,” he said. 

“We aim to deliver innovative education programmes, 

using the state-of-the-art facilities that really 

make a difference to the young people that visit.”

Loved-up 91 year olds get 

big surprise at opticians 

ROMANCE was truly in the eye 

of the beholder as Fred and 

Dorothy Logan were given a Valentine’s 

gift with a difference. 

The Logans, both aged 91, won a competition 

to find the most loved-up couple 

in Mexborough. 

Fred and Dorothy, of Avenue Road, 

Wath, who celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary 

on March 22, were nominated by 

staff at Specsavers in Mexborough. 

Their Valentine’s Day-inspired prize was 

two pairs of glasses each as well as being 

treated to champagne, chocolates and lunch 

at Pettits department store. 

Dorothy said: “We were absolutely astonished 

when we found out that we had 

won, we were like children, we were so excited. 

“We didn’t even know that there was a 

competition so it went from what would 

have been a mundane day to a lovely, happy 

day. 

“We had such a good laugh with the staff 

who have always been so kind and generous 

to us. It really was a pleasant surprise and 

we can’t express our thanks enough to 

everyone involved with the competition.” 

Dorothy and Fred, who said that a sense 

of humour was key to a lasting relationship, 

have been customers at the Mexborough 

York Square branch ever since it opened. 

A spokeswoman for Specsavers, who organised 

the competition, said: “They truly 

have got the love factor. 

“The couple were amazed when they 

found out they had won, thinking they had 

only come to collect their new glasses, but 

they were showered with gifts. 

“They were whisked off for lunch with a 

beautiful bouquet of flowers, which Sheila’s 

Florists did at a reduced cost and a lovely 

sash donated by Customised Kingdom. 

“It’s amazing how a community comes 

together for a bit of love.”

Judge ‘baffled’ 

by changes to 

drug sentences 

A LEADING judge has criticised 

ew “soft” sentencing guidelines 

n drugs offenders after he was 

bliged to give a Swinton man who 

rew cannabis plants a non-custoial 

sentence. 

Judge Michael Murphy said that if 33- 

ear-old Craig Cupit had appeared before 

im a few months ago he would have been 

ailed. 

But new guidelines from the Sentencing 

ouncil for England and Wales, which 

ome into effect later this month, advise 

gainst jailing offenders in cases such as 

upit’s. 

Judge Murphy, one of the most senior 

udges sitting at Sheffield Crown Court, 

aid: “For weeks and months, I have been 

aying in these courts that the production 

f cannabis in this area is at epidemic levls, 

yet here we are being given guidelines 

hich completely dilute our powers.” 

He said that the last time he dealt with a 

Girl bitten by 

dog in street 

POLICE are investigating after a 

four-year-old girl was bitten by a dog. 

Emergency services were called to 

Schofield Street in Mexborough at 11.20am 

yesterday after reports that the girl had been 

bitten by a Staffordshire Terrier. 

The girl, who was with her mum at the 

time, was on her way to visit a relative. 

A police spokeswoman said: “The dog 

had escaped from a neighbour’s property 

and bit the girl in the alleyway between the 

two houses. 

“The young girl sustained an injury to her 

thigh and was taken to the Rotherham Hospital. 

“Police are investigating, and have been 

in touch with the owner and a number of 

enquiries are being conducted.” 

One eye-witness said that the dog appeared 

to have bitten the top of the girl’s 

leg.

The judge said he was effectively bound 

by the new guidelines but added: “I don’t 

want to be, but that is what the law says.” 

Judge Murphy told Cupit: “If you had 

been in front of this court six months ago 

you would have been going to prison but 

the law has changed. Many of us find it difficult 

to understand why.” 

Sentencing guidelines have been 

changed by the council in an attempt to 

make courts more consistent in their approach 

to sentencing. 

The court heard that police raided 

Cupit’s home in New Station Road on September 

29 last year and found a cannabis 

production set-up in his cellar. 

Eight plants were growing which it was 

estimated would yield 896 grammes of 

cannabis with a total street value of £8,960. 

Cupit admitted a charge of producing 

cannabis. 

His barrister, Mr Dermot Hughes, said 

that Cupit’s knee was in a “mess” and he 

used cannabis to alleviate the pain. 

He needed a replacement, but because 

of his age would not get one for some 

time. 

Judge Murphy gave Cupit a 12-month 

community order with supervision by the 

probation service and ordered him to attend 

a victim awareness group. 

q In a separate case, the judge said that 

the new guidelines were “confusing” and a 

“lottery” as he gave Sheffield shop owner 

Neil Tyler (53), a suspended jail term for 

producing cannabis. 

Judge Murphy said of the guidelines: “It 

baffles me and troubles me. We are trying 

to get some common sense out of it.”

A MAN attacked his 

long-term girlfriend “like a 

rhino” after she failed to 

make him a cup of tea, a 

court heard. 

Darren Atkinson was furious 

when Claire Hayes made herself 

a cuppa without asking him if he 

wanted one. 

Mr Neil Coxon, prosecuting, 

told Sheffield Crown Court: “He 

accused her of being selfish. She 

told him not to be childish and 

make his own tea. 

“His whole manner changed. 

He said if she did not shut up he 

would knock her head off. He 

charged towards her like a rhino 

and grabbed her by the throat and 

began to squeeze. 

“This caused her to fall to the 

ground. She sat with her legs 

pulled up to her chest and arms 

over her head for protection.” 

Atkinson (37), admitted assaulting 

Miss Hayes (34), and 

causing actual bodily harm at the 

home they used to share in Goodwin 

Crescent, Swinton. 

He gave her an uppercut to the 

nose and she fell backwards causing 

him to fall on top of her. He 

headbutted her in the face but denied 

kicking or stamping on her, 

the court heard. 

The victim, who was unconscious 

for a short period, was left 

with a swollen and cut nose and 

aches and bruises to her body. 

Mr Coxon said that the pair had 

been in an “on-off ” relationship 

for 18 years. They had two children, 

a 13-year-old boy and tenyear-old 

girl. 

“It had been a volatile relationship, 

characterised by verbal and 

physical abuse,” he said. 

The attack happened on the 

morning of October 8, last year, 

in front of the couple’s children. 

A neighbour rang the police on 

hearing the commotion. 

Atkinson told officers: “I have 

had a bit of a free for all. She 

made a cup of tea for herself and 

nobody else. She went for me and 

scratched my face and it ended up 

with us fighting.” 

Atkinson has 12 previous convictions, 

including a conviction 

for assault in 1995, but had largely 

kept out of trouble for ten years. 

Ms Alison Dorrell, defending, 

said that Atkinson had been remanded 

in custody since court 

proceedings began last October. 

He accepted losing his temper. 

Judge Michael Murphy said that 

if he had been dealing with Atkinson 

four months ago he would 

have imposed an immediate jail 

term. 

But he had already served 121 

days in prison which would count 

against any sentence, he said. 

“Just to send you back to 

prison for a fortnight or so would 

be entirely counter productive,” 

the judge went on. 

He told Atkinson: “You really 

ought to look at yourself. If you 

can do this to a woman because 

of an argument over a cup of tea 

what are you capable of if there’s 

a serious dispute in the domestic 

situation.” 

Atkinson was given a supervised 

two-year community order 

and he was ordered to complete 

an integrated domestic abuse programme. 

He also received a restraining 

order preventing him from contacting 

his former partner or 

going within 100 metres of her 

home. 

Search for Trust governors 

HOSPITAL bosses have launched a search 

for four new governors to help shape the future 

of health services. 

The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust will elect 

the new recruits this spring to join a team tasked with 

improving the service. 

Secretary Kerry Rogers said: “Our governors really 

care about the health of their communities and 

play an essential role in holding the trust to account. 

“We are looking for committed people who want 

to join the team and help improve, develop and support 

positive changes to the services we offer to our 

patients and the wider community.” 

The trust—which has 14,000 members—will fill 

one vacancy each in the Rotherham North, Rother 

Valley South, Rother Valley West and the Rest of 

England constituencies.

When we thought about it we thought

“I know I’m reasonably fit—my training 

started some time ago—and now I can’t

As part of the run-up to the epic pentathlon 

Sally, Danny and Nathan have visited 

hospitals in an effort to get closer to 

the people they intend to help. 

They were also out on the streets of 

Mexborough making collections last weekend. 

Danny, a lorry driver, said: “You don’t 

need much motivation when you’re trying 

to help a charity like Children With Cancer 

UK but we wanted to get close to the cause 

so that we know, and the people making 

donations could know, what it is we are trying 

to do.” 

Danny added that anyone wanting to 

join their ranks would be more than welcome. 

He said: “Places for the Paris marathon 

are no longer available but anyone wanting 

to join us on the other challenges is more 

than welcome to do so. 

“The more the merrier. We want to raise 

as much for the cause as possible.”

Kieran’s logo had 

a serious 

message 

CREATIVE youngster Kieran Waite is 

buzzing after his bumble bee logo made it 

onto safety vests for his school. 

Last year the eight-year-old won a police-run 

competition to design a logo to stop people 

parking on yellow lines and zig zag lines outside 

school gates. 

His PC Bumble design earned him a certificate, 

£20 of vouchers and a trophy for his 

school. 

This week, the Mayor of Doncaster, Peter 

Davies, attended Warmsworth Primary School 

to present Kieran with high visibility vests and 

white baseball caps, complete with his logo, 

for the school. 

Mayor Davies said: “Kieran did an excellent 

job designing this logo. 

“It gives me great pleasure to present him 

with his school’s supply of high visibility vests 

and baseball caps, which will help to keep

Money from St Leger Homes’ estate improvement 

fund and donations from tenants 

and residents associations helped to fund the 

road safety project, which includes banners 

outside schools urging parents to park sensibly. 

A number of hi-vis vests and baseball caps 

will also be presented to a further 24 primary 

schools including those in Edlington, Mexborough, 

Denaby, Conisbrough, Sprotbrough and 

Warmsworth.

Support for helicopter on the rise 

PUBLIC support for South Yorkhire’s 

police helicopter continues to 

row as the Police Authority goes online 

o discuss the issues surrounding its 

roposed axing. 

More than 50 people took part in an online 

eb chat with the authority to discuss the introuction 

of a National Police Air Support, which 

ill replace the existing helicopter based in 

heffield. 

Approximately 100 questions and comments 

ere received and the authority also reported 

ramatically increased traffic through its online 

witter account and website. 

A second live webchat took place yesterday. 

Charles Perryman, chairman of South Yorkhire 

Police Authority, described the live debate 

s “an overwhelming success.” 

He added: “The issue of NPAS has generated

huge interest amongst members of the public 

and as an Authority we need to listen to those 

views. 

“The majority of comments were in favour 

of keeping the helicopter. The public seem as 

unconvinced with the NPAS proposals as members 

of the Police Authority are.” 

The NPAS air support service would see 23 

aircraft operating from 20 bases around the 

country, with the nearest helicopters for South 

Yorkshire located in Derbyshire, Humberside 

and West Yorkshire. 

Representatives from the police authority 

claim that the move will treble response times to 

incidents in Rotherham and increase the distance 

covered by the attending helicopter tenfold. 

In contrast, Mr Perryman said: “We saw a 

large amount of praise for the current air support, 

with the public concerned that NPAS will 

not only affect response times to South Yorkshire, 

but that the savings from the change are 

not significant enough to justify removing the 

current helicopter.” 

The Association of Chief Police Officers suggests 

merging the remaining aircraft into a single 

service would save £15 million a year, almost a 

quarter of the current £66 million annual cost 

of police air support. 

Members of South Yorkshire Police Authority 

will discuss the findings of consultation on 

the introduction of NPAS at a meeting in Barnsley 

tomorrow.

BUSINESS-minded youngsters ready to 

atch their own money-spinning career 

lans could be given a leg up as part of a 

cheme aiming to help 40 people in its first 

ear. 

The Youth Association is encouraging anyone aged 

etween 16 and 24, with aspirations to become their 

wn boss, to take part in their Young Upstarts 

cheme which will be based at Manvers House, Maners, 

from March. 

Young Upstarts will see two 12-week courses caried 

out with the help of mentors from the world of 

usiness and has been made possible thanks to 

92,893 investment from the Coalfields Regeneration 

rust. 

The scheme starts at the same time as 20 Rotheram 

youngsters begin 12-month apprenticeship 

lacements as part of the Trust’s £1.1 million Naional 

Apprenticeships Programme. 

Dmitry Fedotov, from the Youth Association, is 

urrently recruiting Young Upstart’s first intake of 

opefuls. 

He said: “It’s rare that people are given practical 

usiness advice or told how to write their own busiess 

plan but that’s what we will provide. 

“We’ll be linking up with local businesses for site 

isits and business people who will, hopefully, beome 

valuable mentors for our Young Upstarts. 

“The aim is to equip them with everything they 

eed to enter the world of business and, depending 

n the strength of the business plan, they will receive 

ome funding to help them get it off the ground at 

he end of the course.” 

Dmitry said that one Young Upstarts hopeful 

anted to run a mobile vehicle diagnostics service 

nd hoped to gain funding for a van and the relevant 

quipment on the strength of his business pitch. 

Gemma Williams, who is also helping to get the 

ourse off the ground, said: “Young people are findng 

it harder than any other group to get into employent 

at the moment. 

“Young Upstarts aims to get them onto the first 

ung of the ladder with the skills to take their own 

usiness forward.” 

The Young Upstarts programme comes as the 

Coalfield Regeneration Trust announces £1.1 million 

of investment to try and help young people living in 

the region’s pit villages back to work. 

In Rotherham, 20 youngsters will take up 12- 

month “earn while you learn” apprenticeship positions 

over the next three months as part of the 

programme being run in conjunction with Rotherham 

College of Arts and Technology. 

Gary Ellis (pictured), chief executive of the trust, 

said: “With youth unemployment figures spiralling 

upwards this programme will be a real boost for 

young people struggling to find work. 

“Former coalfield communities have been badly 

hit by the economic downturn and this has compounded 

the problems already experienced by young 

people. 

“This programme is a direct response to help 

young people into work and create a strong platform 

for their future aspirations.” 

The 12-month apprenticeships, which will provide 

an opportunity to earn while you learn, will be available 

in a wide variety of industries and will get underway 

over the next three months.

A SCHOOL which provides specialist 

education to young people with autism 

has been rated outstanding by inspectors. 

The Robert Ogden School, on Clayton Lane in 

Thurnscoe, received the top honour following a 

visit by Ofsted officials. 

Inspectors praised the quality of teaching, the 

curriculum and the health and well-being of the 

students at the school which is run by the National 

Autistic Society (NAS). 

Dr Jacqui Ashton-Smith, who was recently appointed 

executive principal, said: “I am immensely 

proud of the hard work and dedication of the staff 

and students at The Robert Ogden School that has 

led to the school achieving this outstanding Ofsted 

result. 

“Having worked with the NAS for 18 years, I’m 

delighted to be taking on a new role and helping to 

develop another school. 

“We want a world where people living with 

autism get to lead the life they choose and I look 

forward to helping play a part in this for all the students 

at the school.” 

The school provides specialist education for five 

to 19-year-olds from around the country. It includes 

a sixth form, 52-week and 38-week residential care 

services. 

It employs 188 staff and has 80 students. 

In the report inspectors said: “The quality of education 

at The Robert Ogden School is outstanding. 

“The school successfully meets its aims, providing 

an environment in which young people feel at 

ease and are enabled to make outstanding progress 

in their learning. 

“The quality of the curriculum, teaching and assessment 

are all outstanding. 

“The curriculum is highly personalised so that it 

meets individual students’ needs exceptionally well. 

“The students’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural 

development is outstanding. 

“The provision for students’ welfare, health and 

safety is outstanding and there are highly robust 

systems to safeguard students.” 

Other areas praised in the report were the sixth 

form cafe and in-house programme that allows students 

to follow their interests from beauty sessions 

to percussion group. 

Departing principal, Gillian Roberts, who spent 

28 years at the school, said that the school was 

being left in good hands. 

She said: “I will take many fond memories with 

me. I’ve worked with Jacqui for many years and she 

is highly regarded within the international autism 

community. 

“I’ve no doubt she will be a great asset to the students, 

staff and parents of The Robert Ogden 

School.”

MONSTER MAGIC 

Instant Ice out of a cup 

Here’s an easy magic trick that is 

really easy to do. Pour some water 

into a cup. Utter some secret words 

and when you turn over the cup, all 

that comes out is a chunk of ice. 

Materials: 

You’ll need an opaque 

cup, a mug works 

great, a sponge and a 

chunk of ice. You’ll 

also need a container, 

such as a glass to hold 

and pour your water 

into the cup. 

The Secret: 

The cup contains a 

sponge that absorbs 

the water and prevents 

the water from spilling 

out when the cup is 

turned over. The ice is 

already on top of the 

sponge and simply 

falls out. 

Preparation: 

Beforehand, stuff the 

sponge into the cup. 

Make sure that it rests 

on the bottom of the 

cup. Place the ice on 

top of the sponge and 

you’re ready to go. 

Performing the 

trick: 

Pour some water into 

the cup. (Before you 

perform the trick 

you’ll have to 

experiment with the 

amount of water 

which will depend on 

the size of your 

sponge). The more 

water that you pour in 

the more impressive 

the trick, but pour in 

too much, and water 

will fall out of the cup 

with the ice. 

Utter some magic 

words, turn over the 

cup and the ice will 

fall out. Make sure 

you hold the cup in a 

way that your 

audience cannot see 

the sponge inside.

five-stage relay event added to 

widen appeal. 

Mayor Cllr Shaun Wright has 

already signed up to walk the first 

five-mile stretch as part of a team 

of fund-raisers in May. 

There is also the Family Ramble, 

which covers about half the 

route and is non-competitive. 

And Barnsley and Rotherham 

Chamber of Commerce—involved 

again after a three-year absence—will 

promote a Corporate 

Challenge for teams of three colleagues. 

The Roundwalk route begins in 

All Saints’ Square before taking in 

sights including Keppel’s Column, 

Wentworth Woodhouse, Hoober 

Stand and Boston Castle. 

Co-ordinator Michael Sumption 

said: “It’s become a great opportunity 

for people to see the 

lovely countryside, as well as an 

advertisement for Rotary and the 

good causes being promoted. 

“The relay will get people joining 

in groups, maybe from down 

the pub or work. 

“Not everyone fancies the idea 

of the full 25 miles, so we hope 

this recipe will prove more appealing.”

Andrew Denniff, who launched 

the walk this week, said: “We are 

pleased to be sponsoring this 

worthwhile event.”

eek I want to draw your attention to poo. 

Yes, poo. 

You may have noticed people on TV adverts talkng 

about poo, a word which until very recently was 

robably considered a bit crude. 

But now, as GPs across the country aim to raise 

wareness about bowel cancer, people are being enouraged 

to be open about their poo. 

Dr Richard Cullen, NHS Rotherham cancer lead, 

aid: “Figures show that bowel cancer claims many 

ives locally every year which is why it’s so important 

eople aren’t afraid to discuss common symptoms 

hich relate to poo. 

“Anyone who has blood in their poo or looser poo 

hat has lasted for more than three weeks should 

rrange to see their doctor. 

“The chances are it’s nothing to worry about, but 

ou need to get checked out because early treatment 

an save lives.” 

In Rotherham there are around 190 cases of bowel 

ancer each year. In 2008 there were 68 deaths in the 

own. 

The disease affects both men and women and is 

esponsible for more than 13,000 deaths a year, makng 

it the UK’s second biggest cancer killer. 

Nine out of ten people diagnosed with bowel caner 

are aged over 55 and those with a family history 

re more at risk. 

The earlier the disease is diagnosed the more treatable 

it is. Nationally it is estimated that 1,700 lives 

could be saved if England’s bowel cancer survival rate 

matched the best in Europe. 

Dr Cullen added: “Many people think that if you 

have bowel cancer there is no hope but it’s important 

to remember that it is a curable disease—if it is diagnosed 

early. 

“By talking about symptoms, we hope that more 

people will come forward to seek advice. It’s very 

straightforward for your GP to examine you and determine 

whether to send you for further tests. Go 

with your instincts—if you are worried, then see your 

GP.”

Elected Mayor preferred 

Sir—In his letter (see Weekender, Februaray 

9) Cllr Holland is once again playing 

his favourite game of using dodgy figures 

to produce misleading percentages and 

using these to vilify the democratically 

elected Mayor of Doncaster. 

The pure personal hatred of the Mayor shows 

through in every venom-laden word he utters and 

demonstrates the mindset of many of the Labour 

Group who are more interested in harming the 

Mayor than working for the good of Doncaster. 

This was the verdict of the Corporate Governance 

Inspectors in April, 2010, when they investigated 

the reason for the disfunctionality of 

Doncaster Council. 

It would appear from 

Cllr Holland’s letter that 

as far as he is concerned, 

nothing much has 

changed. 

The total electorate of 

Doncaster at the local 

elections on May 5, 2011 

was 223,413. In the consultation 

the total votes 

cast in favour of a referendum 

was 1,098. 

This represents 0.49% of the electorate who actually 

voted for the referendum. The vast majority of 

the electorate abstained from voting for reasons 

known only to them. 

For Cllr Holland to claim that 90 per cent of the 

public is in favour of a referendum when 222,315 out 

of 223,413 either voted against a referendum or did 

not vote at all, is a distortion of the truth and shows 

his willingness to deceive. This demonstrates to me 

that he is not fit to hold public office. 

The truth is that the consultation was not advertised 

well and so many people were not aware that it 

was taking place at all, resulting in the fact that only 

0.55% of the electorate voted. 

The Labour Group used this to execute a carefullyplanned 

coup in which they organised their own supporters 

to vote in favour of a referendum, while most 

of the electorate did not know it was taking place. 

To hold a referendum will cost approximately 

£80,000. 

To waste this amount of money (which will have 

to be paid by cash-strapped Council Tax payers) in 

these difficult times is outrageous and demonstrates 

how little Cllr Holland cares about them. 

To describe the Mayor as right wing is ridiculous. 

He believes, as I do, in power to the people, which is 

why he supports the principle of directly-elected 

Mayors, by the whole of the electorate instead of

being elected by a cabal of self-interested councillors 

behind closed doors. 

This is the system which brought us the Donnygate 

scandal and the bribing of councillors by property 

developers and others resulting in some 

councillors being sent to jail. 

Why should we go back to this discredited system, 

which Cllr Holland and his cronies would like to 

bring back to Doncaster. 

I hope that the good people of Doncaster will 

keep the system as it is and ensure that the present 

honest governance continues.

Protest before it’s too late 

Sir—The NHS is being ruined before our 

very eyes. We are sleepwalking into a privatised 

NHS. 

The Health and Social Care Bill is opposed by all

College of Midwives. 

If it becomes law, it will change the NHS forever. 

People should wake up and protest before it’s too late.

in their eyes when they heard that they 

could be travelling to France for the trip of 

a lifetime. 

Now officials of Mexborough Main Street FC are 

osting a charity music night to raise funds for the trip 

or a one-off tournament...and Stars In Our Eyes will be 

roviding the entertainment. 

The Denaby-based charity roadshow is bringing its 

istinctive brand of musical entertainment to Mexborugh 

Athletics Club on Saturday. 

Organiser Linda Carlton said: “We have a boys’ and a

Linda revealed that the club will have to raise around 

£4,500 to make the trip to the Audruicq International 

Tournament—between April 7 and 10—a reality for the 

players. 

Tickets for Stars In Our Eyes night, which will be 

packed with tributes to musical legends from the past 50 

years, are £3 and can be bought on the night. Doors 

open at 7.30pm.

restling Entertainment will be hosting a 

pecial show to mark their birthday. 

The Rotherham-based company will be hosting its 

iggest show yet to celebrate its three-year anniverary 

with wrestling stars from the UK and abroad to 

ompete in the event. 

The UWE and its training schools have been workng 

to give young people across South Yorkshire the 

pportunity of a wrestling career. 

Big American wrestling name, SC Supreme (picured) 

will be making his first exclusive visit to the UK 

o compete alongside Sheffield TV star, Kris Travis 

nd Mexborough’s teenage sensation Mystique (aka 

rad Severns). 

The event will consist of a championship match, 

heavyweight challenge and a tag team clash in order 

o recreate the wrestling action seen each week on 

opular wrestling programme WWE. 

A spokesman said: “We will be bringing the best 

how to town to give something back to the public 

or all their support. 

“This is a family event, with children being more

To my husband, cousins and family, friends, 

neighbours, the Parish Hall Indoor Bowling 

Club and the congregation of Christ Church, 

Brampton, I extend my heartfelt thanks for 

all the love and support you gave to myself 

and my father. You all helped turn a sad and 

painful experience into a celebration of love 

and life. As I said at the funeral service, my 

father would have been overwhelmed at the 

outpouring of love.

bite or two. Today they continue to expect 

the same colossal weights in winter that 

they catch in summer, both of which necessitate 

massive overstocking, which in turn 

needs a big investment. 

The same investment is going into developing 

the fisheries themselves. All over the 

area owners are spending huge sums of 

money digging holes, buying fish, building 

tackle shops and cafes. 

Such investment must be made to work, 

not to sit idle throughout the winter, and so 

all year fishing is here to stay like it or not. 

And I believe the changes will continue, 

mark my words, until, horror of horrors, indoor 

fishing will be provided.

JUST when we were beginning 

to think that we had 

missed winter this year, 

everything changed. 

And it has played havoc with angling 

activities, certainly over recent 

weekends. 

Just a couple of weeks ago, still 

waters were beginning to freeze over 

and anyone wishing to wet a line had 

to consider breaking the ice to do so 

and so the signs were there. 

Rotherham's 65'ers were one of 

the few clubs that managed to fish 

before things became too bad, but 

even then there were signs that 

things were going downhill. 

As ever, Big Adam's Lake at Hayfield 

was the venue and, fearing the 

worst, the lads went armed with 

bloodworm and joker. Obviously serious 

stuff this winter fishing, regardless 

of age. 

Unfortunately, while Alan Scotthorne 

regularly seems to rattle out 

20 plus pounds of roach using what 

many consider to be a magic bait, 

things don't come so easy for those 

less familiar with its use. 

Nevertheless, it was a close result 

with Terry Featherstone finishing in 

top spot with 4lbs 15ozs of small 

fish. It was an 'only just' however, 

for pushing him close at the next peg 

was Ernest Gillott, who weighed 

4lbs 14ozs for second and Tom 

Amos, who had 4lbs 13ozs for third. 

As the week progressed, the situation 

deteriorated rapidly. 

By Friday the weathermen had us 

believing that we were about to be 

covered in Siberian snow that might 

last forever. 

As a result of both the ice and the 

forecast snow, weekend fishing was 

almost abandoned. 

Phoenix and Parkgate anglers did 

make it to Ravenfield to fish the 

Winter League on Saturday morning 

but found when they arrived 

they could not break the ice! Elsewhere, 

the Walkley Winter League 

cancelled its match at Woodhouse 

Grange, something which is almost 

unknown, for fear of travel problems 

and a frozen venue. 

Barnburgh Lakes was one of the 

few venues clear of ice, courtesy of a 

jet ski which is used to smash the ice, 

prior to fishing. Having said that, 

Lakeside at Ranskill use the same 

method but after over two hours of 

trying, anglers still had to abandon 

the league match. 

Tuesday's Over 50s match on the 

Middle Pond at Barnburgh attracted 

14 participants, when 

Howard Cutts took the honours with 

a 48lbs 2ozs net of F1's to the pellet 

from peg four. 

P. Carr was second with 34lbs 

8ozs and P. Collins third with 24lbs 

2ozs. 

The following day no less than 19 

anglers took part in the match on 

the Top Pond where Malc Bailey 

was the winner with a 53lbs 7ozs 

bag, caught with maggots from peg 

15. Gary Jubb was second with 

38lbs 2ozs and Alfie Head third 

with 32lbs 2ozs. 

Twenty anglers braved the snow, 

ice, and poor road conditions to fish 

on the Middle Pond on Sunday, 

when Gary Jubb improved on his 

previous performance by fishing 

pellets at peg 17 to win with 25lbs. 

Andy Sutton took second with 17lbs 

14ozs, ahead of Craig Leyland, who 

had 14lbs 2ozs for third, and Steve 

Manchester, who weighed 13lbs 

8ozs for fourth.

Titans pledge ahead 

of Knights’ TV derby 

ROTHERHAM Titans 

have pledged to hit back 

immediately after Monday’s 

disappointing home defeat 

by Cornish Pirates. 

They travel to Doncaster this 

Saturday for a game to be televised 

live on Sky TV and despite never 

having won at Castle Park, 

Rotherham are determined to get 

back to winning ways. 

Said coach Andre Bester: “It’s 

always difficult going to Doncaster 

but we will put Monday’s game 

behind us and go there with the 

intention of making a point. 

“It was disappointing to lose 

against Pirates but the players were 

undoubtedly rusty, having not played 

for several weeks. 

“It was critical that we played the 

match but we did look like a team 

that has not played for a number of 

weeks. The positives are that we took 

a point out of the match and we 

scored two outstanding tries.” 

Titans lost 19-14 with Barney 

Maddison and Robin Copeland 

touching down. 

Tomorrow’s game starts at 

12.05pm and, with a large crowd 

expected, fans are advised to be early.
